Eli Manning: We're the same team that started 5-0

The New York Giants looked like they were in complete control of the NFC East early this season, but they’ve been in a tailspin since Week Six, and if they lose to the Cowboys on Sunday, they can pretty much forget about winning the division.

But Giants quarterback Eli Manning says there’s no reason for panic, because the Giants are no different now than they were when they won five straight games to start the season.

“We’ve got to know that this is the same team that started 5-0,” Manning said today. “You look at it offensively, the same guys that started the first game are in the huddle. We’ve got the ability and the talent to go out there and play great football and win games, and we’ve got to expect that from ourselves. There’s no reason not to. Just because you go through a little stretch where you’re not playing your best, it’s still the same guys, it’s still the same team that got off to a great start, the same team that beat this team in Dallas in front of 105,000 people.”

Manning sounds confident, but the Giants’ record tells a different story. The Giants are the first team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to drop five out of six games after starting 5-0. Something must be wrong.

Is that “something” Manning’s health? Manning says his foot injury isn’t bothering him, but his passing stats have declined drastically during the Giants’ six-game skid. If the Giants don’t bounce back and beat the Cowboys on Sunday, it’s hard to see how Manning could continue to say with a straight face that they’re still the same team.

Sure they have but look at the teams the giants played the first 5 games, then the next 6 games.

    No, you’re not.

The one time Eli opens his mouth he reminds everyone of why he should keep it closed. The same team? Really? I guess the fact that the #2 and #3 RB’s are hurt makes them the same team. What a fool.

The talent is the same, only their hearts have shriveled up. Ok, maybe its gonads or the lack there of…

  5. nfcbeast says: Dec 2, 2009 5:33 PM

It’s the same group of players but far from what they had as a team the first 5 games.
Manning is hurt, he’s never going to admit it until their playoff hopes are gone…maybe the end of the season
RBs have all been dinged up, Jacobs is not same guy by a long shot, same with Bradshaw.
They have 7 wide outs on their active roster….7! who the hell else has that many? A couple of the receivers like Manningham, Smith and Hixon have had good games, but there are so many that i don’t see how Lil Eli can get any rhythm/timing with them.
    GIANT MESS

  6. nasheagles says: Dec 2, 2009 5:39 PM

    well guarantee a win then!!!!

  7. Levito says: Dec 2, 2009 5:40 PM

Of course Eli’s foot is bothering him, hence the MRI and revelation of the stress reaction. But he would never admit it and place blame on an injury.
But this is also not the same team that went 5-0. The RBs are banged up, the O line missed a starter for the first time in 2 1/2 years, Kenny Phillips is on IR, Tuck is in a sling, and they’re missing their (vocal) leader on defense. This isn’t the same team.
Plus, it’s also not the same schedule. If their first 6 and last 5 games were swapped, they’d probably have about the same record, and everyone would be talking about how this team has woken up and is dangerous after rattling off 5 straight wins.

You mean the same team that Romo gave the win to. lol!

Eli Manning needs to stop talking and actually he prove he can win a game for his team. I have yet to see him do it, and yet he has a bazillion dollar contract. Eli without a running game is like A BLT without bacon: Yeah, its food, but it sucks.

So maybe they dont make the playoffs just maybe they do have two easy games comming up
Even if they dont make the playoffs this will be the first time Easy E did not make the post season
All of you haters who dislike eli can go F off
He is the team leader he is the highest paid QB in the NFL and he plays for one of the oldest most respected team in the game
I can understand why the Chargers hate him since he said NO but why do the rest of you dislike Easy E

just remember, eli has won a superbowl,
how many playoffs games has romo won???

  12. Bird Man says: Dec 2, 2009 6:38 PM

Yea they sucked back in September/October when they were beating crappy teams and they still suck today.

  13. NoHomeTeam says: Dec 2, 2009 6:47 PM

Yes, they are the same team that won 5 in a row — and that’s the problem.
    Let’s look at the opponents:
    1) Redskins — Didn’t they lose to Detroit?
    2) Cowboys — Not nearly as good as their record seems to indicate
    3) Buccaneers — One win. One.
    4) Chiefs — Not going to be a quality team for one, maybe two more seasons
    5) Raiders — Does anything more need to be said?
When faced with a good opponent– or even a fairly good opponent — they couldn’t get the job done.

    What Eli means is…..
We’re the same team that went 5-0 against teams like the Chiefs and Raiders. We’re also the same team that got manhandled by the Chargers and Broncos.
Meaning yes they truly are the same team that beats bad teams and loses to average teams

Shut your mouth fool, Eli’s defense and David Tyree won the superbowl. How many did Eli win before the superbowl run? Thought so…

Wow. I didn’t hate Eli until you called him “Easy E,” Bigbluefan.
    Now I can’t stand him.

  18. pdxbolt4life says: Dec 2, 2009 7:03 PM

Charger fans don’t hate lil Eli blue…actually we’d enjoy playing him every year!!! It’s fools like you we can’t stand. You talk all your g-girls smack and then get all pouty lip when your team can’t finish. You got pimpslapped on turkey day by the donkeys and you’re on a downhill slide. You’re done. The cowboys are gonna pound you this week and it hurts real bad because you know there’s not a damn thing you can do.

    Thought so!!!!!!!!!

  20. antneejay2 says: Dec 2, 2009 7:15 PM

From what I’ve seen of them lately, it appears to me their line play has dropped off on both sides of the ball. That’s never a good thing.

That same phrase could be applied to (in no particular order): Joe Namath, Jim McHahon, Steve Young, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Kurt Warner, Trent Dilfer, Phil Simms, Jeff Hostetler, Joe Theismann, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams.
    To name a few.
    Fool.

  22. SF Saints Fan says: Dec 2, 2009 7:53 PM

What do you expect him to say? We suck?
Eli is class. The Giants cleaned up on an easy schedule early in the season and had their rear end handed to them by the Saints. They lost a little confidence and have had a few injuries. They are still in the playoff hunt and have about a 50/50 shot of making the post season. Given the injuries and the fact that they look to be in a little bit of a rebuilding phase, that is not all that bad.
Eli is just a cut below the truly elite QB’s in the league. Easily a top 10 QB, he is playing in the toughest media market in the country and he is playing through an injury. Not bad…..

  23. chapnasty says: Dec 2, 2009 7:55 PM

Yes, we all get the regurgitated point that in the 4 years that Tony Romo has been a starter he hasnt won a playoff game. Go think of something a little more creative fool!

  24. DirtMcGirt24 says: Dec 2, 2009 8:06 PM

    1. Eli spoke, as best as I could tell, given the direct reference to the “offense”, mostly about the offense. And, as I recall, the offense had not given up the following point since starting 5-0:
    48, 24, 40, 21, 31, 26.
    2. The Cowboys have a 2 game lead on the Giants. To my knowledge, the Giants have two losses to San Diego and New Orleans, two teams the Cowboys have yet to play, two teams the Cowboys are in good position to lose to. So let’s call it like it is and say the whole division is suspect (Eagles loss to Oakland is not forgotten).

  25. Leviathan says: Dec 2, 2009 8:07 PM

Aside from the decimated defense, the losing streak, and the complete lack of any killer instinct yes. Same team. Sure, you hick.

Um, no, it’s that Manning is the most overhyped, overrated “Top 10″ QB. Wit the exception of their run in the playoffs he has been shit. He played very well in those games but before and since….well, you decide. Bet the Giants are wishing they hadn’t splurged

Yet to see eli win a game for his team? he was excellent against dallas and their defense didnt get the job done, he outplayed rivers and the giants were winning w a min to go and the D blew it, and the atlanta game the giants D didnt make a stop the whole second half, Manning had to throw close to 400 yards, 3 tds and no TO’s for them to win. they solely won bc of him.
secondly, manhandled by the chargers? their D blew it on that final drive, they played a prevent, manning had better numbers than rivers and zero turnovers..and the last comment, well you decide? ok? he followed up the SB w a 12-4 record, and threw 20 tds w only 10 picks, 2:1 is pretty good to me. This season hes going to throw for30 td’s and half the amount of picks, again pretty good. Do any of you watch any giants games? or just comment to comment..Some people are still saying “they win bc of their D” their defense is atrocious, their run game is atrocious as is their O line. The only chance they have of winning is bc of him. All summer it was, hes going to be the worst w no wr’s etc etc…now him and the wr’s are their strong pt. He had a bad foot and refuses to make that an excuse unlike some QBs but instead its ohhh wahhhh he has a bad foot, what a girl. last i checked, a bad foot nin the NFL is pretty serious, yet hes still playing. in 07 he separated his throwing shoulder in wk 2 and played all yr and the excuse was “he is hurt bc hes a girl and not peyton” this whole eli bashing is getting old already. he makes the playoffs every yr hes been in the league and has thrown for over 20 tds a season and so on. im convinced half these posts are just to be funny but you come off as retards bc its painfully obvious you dont watch giant games..eg: hasnt won a game for them all yr eg: manhandled by SD eg: what hes done since the playoffs…all i know is he turned a pretty no name wr corp and a rookie wr into something good.

The NFC East will come down to week 17 – birds at boys. Winner takes the east and get a home game, loser gets the wildcard.
