Jerry Jones dangles a carrot for Wade Phillips

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones previously has declined to talk about the status of coach Wade Phillips beyond the current season.

The third-year coach, whose contract contains a team option for 2010, could be fired with no buyout obligation.

So is Phillips, who was fired from two prior head-coaching jobs, under pressure?

“I don’t know that it’s anymore so for Wade than it is for anybody else on this team,” Jones said Wednesday, per Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com.  “But what we do here and how we get into these playoffs . . . have a game [at home], get a bye.  All of those are things that look good for Wade.”

Jones left out one key factor:  Win a playoff game.

The last such victory came on December 28, 1996.

So if Wade Phillips can do what Chan Gailey and Dave Campo and Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips (in 2007 and 2008) have been unable to do, maybe he’ll be back for 2010.

    Note to Jerry Jones:
To motivate Phillips dangle peanutbutter fudge, NOT a carrot.

  2. Laxer37 says: Dec 2, 2009 7:13 PM

If Jones wants Wade Phillips attention he should be dangling a jelly donut in front of him not a carrot.
The guy just doesn’t strike me as a big vegetable guy.

ONE OTHER FACTOR, FLORIO: how do they get a bye? They need a better record than the Vikings OR Saints to be the number 2 seed, and that ain’t happening.

  4. FireJerryJones says: Dec 2, 2009 7:17 PM

Since when is Wade motivated by carrots?
Now… you put a piece of chocolate cake out there…. and you’ve got his attention!!!

  5. chapnasty says: Dec 2, 2009 7:20 PM

If they bring him back in any capacity other than DC then I will officially say JJ is worse than Dan Snyder.

  6. Bwa Ha Ha says: Dec 2, 2009 7:22 PM

Jerry dangling his carrot in front of Wade seems….. a little creepy

  7. Kige Ramsey says: Dec 2, 2009 7:22 PM

So you are saying Wade Phillps is Bugs Bunny Florio :)

Careful Wade, that’s not a carrot.
    Put it away Jerry.

  9. Bird Man says: Dec 2, 2009 7:30 PM

Yea totally his fault these last two years. As the head coach, he should have reminded Tony Romo not to choke in the big game(s).

  10. SC21 says: Dec 2, 2009 7:32 PM

Double J might have better luck if he dangles a cupcake for Wade.

  11. antneejay2 says: Dec 2, 2009 7:39 PM

Florio is a hater. He’s just jealous because he doesn’t have five rings. I have five rings. I stole one from my uncle, three are from Walmart and one from a gumball machine (not the cheap kind, the 50 cent kind).

  12. kosarsmyidol says: Dec 2, 2009 7:49 PM

If only Michael Jackson was around to dangle Jerry Jones off a balcony…*sigh*

  13. PatricktheDookie says: Dec 2, 2009 7:51 PM

A first round bye isn’t going to happen for Dallas – not with Minnesota and New Orleans destroying the rest of the league.

  14. moosev says: Dec 2, 2009 7:54 PM

I hate the Cowboys! BUT, they are in first place in a tough division. Since I see no difference in Jerry Jones than I do in our pathetic owner in DC, it’s nice to see Jerry foreseeing the inevitable… which is another December collapse. That said, I feel kind of bad for Bum’s son. He’s got his team in a position I would kill to be in and his owner let’s the “fire the bum” talk festor. Still amazes me that Hershel Walker made Jerry Jones. It’s been down hill since.

  15. bigtrav425 says: Dec 2, 2009 8:04 PM

No way Phillips is their next yr..not with all these coaches like Cowher etc out their and still with Garret waiting in the wings.Jones wants to make a splash cuz thats his style

  16. VonClausewitz says: Dec 2, 2009 8:06 PM

I don’t see Phillips sticking around. He’s had his chance at bringing discipline to the way in which the players approach the game and he hasn’t succeeded. That’s the problem with the Boys – they’re too unfocused. Even with a win in the playoffs it’s likely that the lack of focus will still burn them. You just don’t spontaneously turn into something you are not. I think Jerry needs to consider his own role in bringing this mentality to the team too before he makes a decision on what he’s going to do in the offseason. The sad thing is that he had a guy in Parcells who was doing it but for some forced personnel moves Jerry derailed it.

  17. Leviathan says: Dec 2, 2009 8:06 PM

Just win, boys. Just win. Shuts Florio and all these other armchair field generals up. For twenty seconds.

I was thinking the same thing. How does Jerry think he has a realistic shot at a bye. The Cowboys are two games back of the Vikings and three games back of the Saints. The Cowboys do play the Saints and assuming they can win that game, do you really see the Saints losing TWO more games AND the Cowboys running the table.
Jerry should be worried about just making the playoffs. The Cowboys remaining schedule is tough and their opponents have a combined record of 35-20. They could easily lose 2 or 3 more games. I am pretty sure that 11-5 gets them in as East Champs, but 10-6 might not work out, although at worst they should still get a wildcard.

  19. Bob S. says: Dec 2, 2009 8:18 PM

    “win a playoff game”?
lose to the giants sunday and they won’t even play ina playoff game this year – and same for the giants.

  20. Hooby says: Dec 2, 2009 8:18 PM

@moosev theyre in first by 1 game, and their play against the redskins and the packers suggests that 8-3 isnt completely true. but they played like 11-0 against the raiders…thats gotta count for something rite?
but yeah, dont be surprised when the cowboys dont make it past round 1 and wade phillips suddenly get stabbed in the back yelling “oh, jerry! why jerry? WHY!?!?!?!?” when really its his own fault the cowboys arent competing for the superbowl every year.

  21. bluestree says: Dec 2, 2009 8:23 PM

Bye! Bye! Did you say….Bye! I just hope we can win a game! Bye!

  22. jamesn says: Dec 2, 2009 8:39 PM

Sadly, Florio edited context out of Jerry’s quote. The words in the ellipsis are important to deciphering bye reference (understanding Jones’ speech pattern helps a lot too; see also Fake Jerry). The entire sentence is:
“But what we do here and how we get into these playoffs and get in with an advantage — have a game here, get a bye — all of those are things that look good for Wade.”
I take the entire sentence to mean that the reference to a bye is part of a list of (two) things that are advantages in the playoffs, not necessarily an achievable advantage.

  23. WashingtonRedOookies says: Dec 2, 2009 8:48 PM

First place in a tough division? Neither the Cowboys or the Eagles would be above 500 in a solid division like the AFC North, AFC East, or NFC North.
Both teams were nearly beat by the least of the east in the last two weeks.

  24. Bob Loblaw says: Dec 2, 2009 8:49 PM

There’s no way the Cowboys bypass the Saints or Vikings. But I think Jerry Jones knows how high profile the game with the Saints will be, so he’s just trying to he’s just trying to up the ante for the Cowboys to be the team that knocks off the Saints in a couple of weeks.

  25. FumbleNuts says: Dec 2, 2009 8:53 PM

Romo went to Vegas to bet on the Cowboys?

  26. holymackeral says: Dec 2, 2009 8:55 PM

Here is a challenge for “America’s Team” fan’s- get rid of Jerry Jones. This guy has no guts. I rather have Al Davis (vomit), at least he has a reason to fire his dismal players and coaches . Jerry has had good players and coaches for years but he continues to F it up. Why don’t you Cowboy fans tell Jerry to go solve our oil crisis and leave your team alone…

  27. eagles_2031 says: Dec 2, 2009 9:29 PM

how much more can he danlge wade, he is already jerry’s puppet. dance wade dance…. jerry should just come to the sidelines and coach in plain sight like a real man or whatever her turned himself into with that plastic surgery he had.

  28. dlmcc0909 says: Dec 2, 2009 9:29 PM

Im a Cowboys fan but lets be honest, Cowboys are a one and done in the playoffs this year. The Packers game was all i needed to see

  29. crimsonking52 says: Dec 2, 2009 10:00 PM

Son of Bum isn’t much of a coach, but hey, let’s face facts; that’s the way JJ likes it. Now as for Jerry, well he flat out sucks. He is about the worst thing about the NFL. He is a narcissist with a little pecker. Yes, the little pecker is Wade Phillips.

  30. VoxVagina says: Dec 2, 2009 10:10 PM

Maybe Florio is subtly ccalling Wade a jackass. (Donkey-carrot)

  31. ewurm says: Dec 2, 2009 10:31 PM

Wade Phillips is fat. I’ll skip the previously oft abused metaphor.

Hey Jackass, step away from your mothers computer and go to bed…
AFC North-Bengals got beat by the Raiders (nuff said), Ravens lose to superior teams but have 2 impressive wins against the Browns, Steelers also 1 game over .500 but lost to the Bears & Chief and then you have the Browns…need I say more? (Bengals in playoffs, 2- teams still fighting for a spot)
AFC East-Pats only good team in that division with everyones else below .500 with a total combined record of 14-19…pathetic. (Pats only team in playoffs)
NFC North-Vikings only good team in division but have the 2nd softest schedule in the league. Packers lost against the…BUCS??The Bears and Lions are a scandalous 6-16 combined. (Vikes in playoffs with the Packers still fighting)
NFC East-3 teams over .500 with the only weak link being the Skins. ALL 3-teams are fighting for a playoff spot
Next time is best you say nothing at all….makes your parents look bad.

JJ quit dangling your carrot and Drop that coach he is just a bit above average nothing else. I am not a Dallas fan but I understand they are Americas team. CTC and bring Shanahan, Cowher, or Holgrem forget the rest and fix the damn defense Terrence isn’t that great and yes Ware is a stud. JJ do what you gotta do If not f$*K it go Falcons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. PSU COWBOY says: Dec 2, 2009 11:48 PM

    “Jerry is terrible”
    “Wade is a loser”
    “It’s December, HIT THE DECK!”
Jerry has 3 rings and has done everything for the Cowboys. I have never once thought he wasn’t doing he best to put Dallas in a position to win. I will agree he would be better off getting a real GM but he is the OWNER and it’s his call. *give him some credit… at least he went and got a GM after three 5-11 seasons…
Wade has three winning seasons in Dallas (and yes thats including this year- I know its only 8 wins so far but as Bill Parcells once said when Dallas hit 8 wins “You can’t call them losers anymore.”) Sure, I would love to see more fire out of him but he is doing a pretty good job. 8-3 1st in NFC East. His defense (other than a shortage on turnovers) has given up the 2nd fewest points in the league. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!
December? Has this team lost in December yet? I repeat: Has THIS TEAM lost in December yet? I didn’t think so. Let’s see what happens on Sunday. I think many Cowboys fans, like myself, we be pleasantly surprised.

“I was thinking the same thing. How does Jerry think he has a realistic shot at a bye. The Cowboys are two games back of the Vikings and three games back of the Saints.”
Well see, there are five games left in the season, and stranger things have happened than for one or two teams that have never won jack in the modern era of the NFL to continue that trend. Don’t believe me? Ask Andy Reid.

  41. penguininbondage says: Dec 3, 2009 9:02 AM

Andy Reid has never blown a divisional lead in December.

  42. Kevin from Philly says: Dec 3, 2009 9:14 AM

Don’t grab that “carrot”, Wade. Just because it’s sorta shaped like a carrot, it’s orange and smells like rotting vegetables, doesn’t mean it’s a carrot.

  43. Dawkphan says: Dec 3, 2009 9:21 AM

Again with the Eagles comparison, Really Vox
You should see someone about this obsession (among other things).
PS: how far back does the modern Era extend
i’m guessing at least 10 yrs. I hope that the cowboys “continue thier Trend”
