PFTV explores Belichick's cry of "uncle"

Nearly two full days after the fact, we’re still fuming about the decision of Pats coach Bill Belichick to throw in the towel at a time when his team — led by supposedly the greatest quarterback of all time (just ask any Patriots fan) –  trailed the Saints by 21 points with 5:22 to play.

Not only did Belichick rob his team of a chance at a win, but he also robbed the rest of us of a chance to witness something truly historic.

So allow us to bitch about it some more, PFTV style.  (And, yeah, we thought about making a smart ass remark regarding the still image in the video player, but we’ll defer to PFT Planet on this one.  Best proposed caption gets a free one-year subscription.)

Make up your mind. You are so damn contradictory. If Brady, Welker or Moss had been injured you’d have been the first to call Belichick arrogant for leaving them in the game.

To add on to Florio’s take, here’s my take.
BB was afraid of the Saints running up the score on the Patriots like the Patriots did to the Titans. He can dish it out, but can’t take it. He sent out the backups and ran up the white flag. Cowardly.

    @ Florio,
Clearly, you didn’t pay attention to the game. They were being destroyed on O and D and there was no need to risk injury. He needed to get Hoyer and some others some game action, so that’s what he did. This should be obvious to anyone, so naturally you’re confused.

  23. Patsfan1776 says: Dec 2, 2009 4:24 PM

In Bill we trust! I believe it was a tactical decision in an attempt to win the war. The Patriots obviously had a crappy game plan and the Defense was still out on Bourbon Street. The Pats just need to win the AFC East to make the playoffs so why shoot all of your bullets on the chance you can win a non division game especially when you have a division game this weekend.
Of course, the Pats will need to have better game plans and preparation for the playoffs but there will be 4 or 5 weeks more game film of the better teams by then. (4 weeks for teams that rest their starters on the last weekend)

Here’s my feelings on this topic:
When what you’re doing is working, you leave the starters in, and keep doing it. Whether its 10-0 or 59-0, whether it’s the 2nd quarter or the 4th quarter.
When what you’re doing isn’t working, you yank whoever is not getting the job done, and give someone else a shot.
That these simple concepts are so difficult to comprehend is simply mind boggling.

  40. danmateus75 says: Dec 2, 2009 5:05 PM

The seeds of Monday’s historic defensive downfall have been planted in a series of bad drafts, in a series of bad personnel decisions (including players signed and players sent packing) and in the assistant coaching exodus that has taken place every year since the last Super Bowl.
The Patriots have not made an impact free agent signing on defense since Rodney Harrison in 2003. They haven’t made an impact draft pick in the secondary since Asante Samuel in 2003. They haven’t made an impact draft pick on defense, period, since Vince Wilfork in 2004 (though 2008 Defensive Rookie of the Year Jerod Mayo could prove to be that next great stalwart).
You can even pinpoint the moment at which it all began to fall apart — in the wake of Super Bowl XXXIX in February 2005, New England’s last championship. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis left for Notre Dame. Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel left for the Cleveland Browns. (Both, of course, are out of work today.)
But it was in the personnel department that offseason when things begin to unravel.
The Patriots whiffed badly everywhere. In the free agent market, they signed the likes of career backup Monte Beisel and 35-year-old Chad Brown to play linebacker. The draft was no better: The Patriots selected corner Ellis Hobbs, safety James Sanders and linebacker Ryan Claridge. Hobbs today is a kick-return specialist in Philly, Sanders is a special teamer for New England, and Claridge never played a down in the NFL.
That’s a bad offseason, and bad offseasons in NFL personnel markets ALWAYS are felt on the field. The Patriots fell from second in scoring defense in the championships season of 2004 (16.3 PPG) to 17th in 2005 (21.1 PPG).
The Patriots since that day have struggled to find defensive talent, and they’ve struggled to field championship-caliber defenses.
They’ve fielded some decent units, sure, but certainly none to fear. The Patriots entered the Monday night game, for example, with what appeared on paper to be the second-best defense in football (16.4 ppg). But as we saw on the field, that number was just an illusion.
They’ve yet to come up big in a big game since the last Super Bowl season. They’ve yet to piece together a shut-down crew, the kind that beat up Marshall Faulk in Kurt Warner in Super Bowl XXXVI, or embarrassed MVP Peyton Manning in the 2003 and 2004 playoffs, or that made Donovan McNabb vomit under the pressure on national television.
Instead, since those days, the New England defense has folded like a bath towel time and again in critical moments.
Defensive geniuses don’t whiff on defensive draft picks year after year. Defensive geniuses don’t whiff on free agent signings year after year — hell, you could argue that reality TV star Junior Seau has been New England’s most coveted defensive signing of the last three years. Defensive geniuses don’t watch their defenses collapse in critical moments of big games year after year.
And defensive geniuses don’t watch Drew Brees produce one of the great passing days in the history of the game against their team.

I think he realized that if he kept trying to score and kept his starters in he risked injury and the possibility that the Saints would have kept their collective feet on the gas peddle. The Saints could have easily hung a 50 on the Pats. The score was not even close to how lopsided the game was, especially in the second half. Brady looked lost.
I have total respect for the Pats and what they have done Super Bowl wise and being able to keep their team at or near the top, but they have been known to pound a few teams when they are down for the count…….not that there’s anything wrong with that…….

As a Patriot fan we can only admit that we got our asses handed to us on Monday by a very special team down in New Orleans.
Our secondary which came into the game as a “strong point” proved to be anything but. Our run defense held it’s own. Our running game was better than expected. And our passing game failed to capitalize on a secondary that had 2 starting corners that had been out of football for all of this season.
I hope we can get another crack at Indy in the AFC Championship game (we gave that game away, don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise). And if the Saints make it to the SB I will pray to all lords and gods for a puncher’s chance.

  49. Whatever897 says: Dec 2, 2009 5:21 PM

Sorry, I have to agree with all of you (and Florio) who said it was extremely cowardly to pull your starters out without ‘finishing the game’ like BB and Tom Brady claimed they were doing when they butchered the Redskins a few years ago and the Titans more recently. I can’t stand the Redskins, but even I felt anger over that. However, when the criticism came in, ol’ Bill and Tommy Boy talked bravely about finishing the game and playing for a full 60 minutes.
However, whoever the Pat’s fan is (above) who said that you (actually Bill) pull the people who aren’t getting the job done – he makes sense too. So… let’s face it, we’re going to look at this like we want to and quite frankly I’m sticking with the ‘he’s a coward deep down’ and on the surface he wanted to protect his guys.

Belichick: What message do you think you sent to your team when you sponsor early quitting like that???

I will tell you exactly why BB gave up. Its because I had:
    Welker >8.5 catches
    Pats pts >27
    Pats pts 2nd half >14.5
and needed 1 more TD from Brees to complete a miracle comeback in fantasy and win a playoff spot.
God was punishing me for my gambling sins. I apologize to everyone else who was negatively impacted by this decision.

    This isn’t about YOU, Florio.
Belichick had a simple choice… try to overcome a three touchdown deficit in five minutes against a team that dominated the Pats from the middle of the first quarter on, or make sure that he could protect some key starters from injury. As a Patriots’ fan, I believe he made the right call.
Belichick can’t win with the media (and yes, I am loosely including PFT in this category) regardless of the decision he makes. First, it was the ESPN folks making something out of nothing, and now it’s you. Move on, already.

  84. VonClausewitz says: Dec 2, 2009 8:00 PM

In my opinion the decision to pull players was very much about psychology.
The Pats have this funny thing going for them. They have a mystique. They have an aura that’s bigger than they are. When teams play them it’s expected that the Pats will, more often than not, just be better prepared and execute better. They don’t get rattled. They pull games out against great teams by thinking further ahead. They play their own game and do not have the game dictated to them. It’s almost assumed that if a player is a Patriot more is expected from them right off the bat -that somehow they are already polished. I think even the Pats players themselves believe this. That’s how high the expectation bar has been set there.
But this perfection clearly cannot be real. People just don’t suddenly get transformed. There’s always a process. While BB may have success in finding players who have the physical skills to execute what they need to execute, and the mental skills to know what they should do within the scheme for a given situation, he cannot change their psychology overnight. He needs to get them to buy into the program. He needs to groom them by putting them in situations where they can see they can be successful when they see the field the same way he does. If a developing team is blown out by a superior opponent and individual players start to show signs of falling back on instinctual behavior and bad habits, it’s time to remove them before they take a big step backwards.
At the point in that game against the Saints, it was clear that they were on fire. They were making plays on defense and the Pats were trying to push things and failing. And when Brees was on the field he was making consistently absurdly precise throws. The Saints were just the better team that day. It looked to me like the Pats were a little frustrated by how error-free the Saints were. When you start to get out of your game plan and start looking rattled your chances of injury are a lot greater. An injury to a core piece,at that point especially on offense would be catastrophic to the Pats season.
Secondly do you keep your team in there when they are getting more and more visibly frustrated, in a game you aren’t going to win, and help plant the seed that the Pats can be rattled? Or do you cut your losses?
After learning under Parcells it’s not such a surprise that Belichick has taken some of the psychology lessons with him. It’s just another battlefield in the war. The big picture is that there’s still a season to play out. One game, especially when you’ve gotten what you can get out of it, isn’t worth risking the season on.

Dan, nice work there. As a Patriots fan I’d agree with you on a number of points. However, you fail to mention a couple key things.
The draft picks the Patriots have had.. except for Mayo, have all been in the far lower portion of the first round; hence the lack of an “impact” signing. The fact is that “blue-chippers” are a very very rare thing when you are constantly having to draft at the bottom of the round. With that in mind, the Patriots like to trade down into the second and chance finding value to cost. With the current rookie contract levels and then having a team like New England does, this is a factor. Think about it.. this DECADE has been one where the Patriots are consistantly in the mix.. CONSISTANTLY. I would challenge you to give me another three teams that odds-makers seriously have to consider in their betting. For and entire DECADE… not 3-5yrs.
In regards to personnel.. front office and coaching. There definately has been a “brain drain” since the initial Super Bowl; yet the Patriots continue to succeed. Again, look at the player contracts. Brady, Moss, Wilfork, Warren, Mayo and Welker.. all of these pieces have to fit finacially. Seymour didn’t and they knew he wouldn’t so they took Oakland’s first rounder next year (most likely a top 10).
New England has no “real” offensive coordinator currently, after McDaniel’s departure. Now keep in mind the known work ethic that BB has and then add on the offensive side of things.. this year is to much for him.
The defense is starting to get younger now and the Patriots will continue to, as they were even back when they won the first Super Bowl, a “bend-don’t-break” defense.
In New Orleans they broke. They gave up BIG plays.. and that is a rarity. Normally, teams are forced into third down situations vs. New England but the Saints weren’t.. Indy was in the first couple quarters but then they turned it on in the 4th.
I find it rather funny that because the Patriots lose to two undefeated teams that their organization is now “DONE.”
Respect to the Saints and Indy.. they are good teams but please PornFlorio… get yourself checked for a concussion huh??
PS: Let’s revisit this in the postseason.
