Lions' Delmas fined for Thanksgiving hit

During the second quarter of the Packers-Lions game on Thanksgiving, Detroit safety Louis Delmas got an unnecessary roughness penalty for hitting Packers tight end Jermichael Finley when Finley was going up for a ball on a route over the middle.

The Packers were unhappy about the hit — and the way Delmas celebrated it — and Finley said after the game that he wanted payback.

Finley didn’t get the payback he wanted, but maybe he can take some solace in learning that the NFL hit Delmas in the paycheck.

John Niyo of the Detroit News reports that the league fined Delmas $7,500 for the play.

Delmas has been one of the few bright spots in another terrible Lions season, and he’s starting to earn a reputation as one of the league’s top up-and-coming young defensive backs. But he might also be earning a reputation as a dirty player.

Niyo reports that Delmas has been fined multiple previous times this season. He was fined on two separate occasions for helmet-to-helmet hits and once for unsportsmanlike conduct for slapping the ball out of Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey’s hands after Shockey scored a touchdown. The hit on Delmas is his fourth fineable offense in 10 career games.

Get ready folks…….Flag football is coming faster than most people thought!

D guys sit back and prey on suspecting players and call them selves “tough” but it’s the O guys that are tough. They take the hits and then deal with actions of clowns like Delmas that think they are bad. $7500 is minor.

Keep hitting like that, Delmas, and happily pay the fines. It worked just fine for Rodney Harrison (big money, Pro Bowl appearances, Super Bowl rings).
Look at it as an investment, for the more fines you incur slobber-knocking guys, the more teams will be lined up to give you the big bucks when your prison sentence in Detroit comes to an end.

Delmas is actually bringing some intensity to Detroit. Maybe Delmas will actually make someone think twice about going over the middle in the future. I don’t like unsportsmanlike plays, but I haven’t seen a physical Lions player in a long time and it’s kind of exciting. Hopefully he can stay out of trouble.

The hit was with shoulder pads to his chest just below his helmet, I thought the flag was B.S. and the fine is even more so. If you do not want to get hit then go play tennis – what a bunch of f’ing babies the NFL is turning into!!

What happened to the Rudy Carpenter story?

Cue Fan_Of_Four saying how terrible JerMichael Finley is and how Ted Thompson sucks.

Twiz, while I agree that the league is taking some of the roughness out of the game. But c’mon, did you even see the hit?? The ball was already well past Finley who didn’t make an effort at an uncatchable ball. All Delmas was thinking was, “if he had caught this, I’d have hit him like THIS…” and then smoked him, ball no where near in play and Delmas had to take several steps to get to Finley. Great call and monetary fine. Im all for punishing the receivers going over the middle, but only when they have the ball or to break up a completed pass, not on an unprotected, unsuspecting receiver.

The new rules are you can’t hit the players because you may cause a concussion…..
Really this isn’t sissy stuff, its for the KIDS! They see these hits and think its OK and hit their playmates like that! Just like how I learned to shoot my playmates with shotguns that made their beaks flip around their heads. THATS ALL FOLKS…….

That’s absolutely ridiculous. Rodgers was right in calling Delmas out, but that should have been the end of it. Goodell is ruining this sport to line his own pockets.

I didn’t think the hit deserved a fine. I thought it was pretty good and legal, but that is just my opinion. I wish the Packers would lay a hit like that on the opposition once in awhile.

The NFL definitely needs feedback about what it’s like going across the middle of the field, from guys sitting on a couch drinking beer like yourself.

    Beer Cheese Soup,
Your last comment was ridiculous. Super would be embarrased for you. Conspiracy theorist huh? Should have known.

Loved the hit! Knocked his and Finley’s helmets off!
Reminds me of Jack Tatum, now, there was a hitter.

Appropriate fine. Finley is and will be a star in this league for a long time! Great find!

The Packers are known as the cheap shot artists of the NFL

My last comment was a joke. OBVIOUSLY Goodell doesn’t profit from fining players, he just acts like it.
You sound really stupid referring to yourself in the third person. Not quite as stupid as most of the other things you’ve said though.

  21. Ambrose says: Dec 4, 2009 8:47 AM

    marshall70…
Are you disturbed? Favre $10K, Allen $50K, Williams $7.5K, just to name a few.
