The Saints are catching on

Though we don’t want to cover in this context too much of the content of Friday’s edition of PFT Daily, there’s a point from the coming video that we need to address in this space.

Everybody loves the Saints.

Well, more people love the Saints than ever before.

Darren Rovell of CNBC recently pointed out that the Saints have reached the top ten in team merchandising sales for the first time since the league began tracking such figures 30 years ago.

But no individual player from the current Saints team is in the top-ten list of jersey sales; quarterback Drew Brees currently holds the No. 12 position.

The leader, as determined from sales made at NFLShop.com during the period of April 1 through November 30, is Brett Favre, who was a member of the Vikings for less than half of that period.

You Favre fans are gonna go broke buying all those different Favre jerseys. The guy is a freak of nature though, and one heck of a football player.
I’ve still got mine, but it’s Green & Gold. Just can’t bring myself to buy the other ones.
Good luck to the Vikes, Saints & Colts (and Packers). Could lead to one heck of a NFCCG & Super Bowl.

Just shows what a bunch of frontrunners there are around who call themselves football fans. They pick a “favorite” team based on who is winning at the moment.

Florio, been reading your site since 2006. I never thought I would see this amount of coverage on the Saints. The “lowly” Saints are going to go 19-0…there is a god. Love the site, even under NBC…keep it up.

It’s no surprise and it happens in every sport in every country.
How many Phillies fans did you know before 2008 vs. how many you know now?
People just like to root for good teams, and it’s no fun to watch a team that constantly sucks. Just ask Lions fans.
I, for one, will always be a Giants fan, no matter how badly they screw things up. And it’s plenty.

Which just goes to show that, no matter how many pencilneck cheesedicks armchair QBs like you try to badmouth this guy and say that he’s a drama queen and that he fakes injuries and that his teammates hate him and that he’s a narcissistic asshole who uses his wife’s cancer to promote his own self and bla bla bla, REAL football fans out there who actually know the game and care about the game that’s played in between the white lines (as opposed to caring about gossip and what some player said about another on “Twitter”) appreciate old #4 for the tough and legendary player that he’s been for almost 20 years now.
What I’m saying is, it’s good to see that most football fans are still too busy with their lives to bother reading the blogging of internet hacks, much less be brainwashed by their “journalism”.

Not cocky. I honestly think they’re far better than ANY team in the league. They just seemed to be so focused. If we had the division wrapped up I wouldn’t think so, but having favre and friends on their tail will make them strive for perfection and there is NO WAY IN HELL, we lose in the dome…NO WAY

I’ve been a Saints fan for 25 years now, about two thirds of my life. I’m happy to welcome people onto the bandwagon. I just wish it would get them on TV more often. The MNF game is the only one I’ve actually been able to watch this year on TV.
I’d agree with the assessment that it would be a shame if the Vikings lose just one game and don’t get home field advantage. But them losing it to an undefeated team wouldn’t be nearly as big a shame as if the Saints end up losing just one game and have to go to Minnesota in the playoffs just because the Vikings loss was to an AFC team. One that has been very UNimpressive at times this year, at that.
I’m eager to see how the Vikings do this week against a decent team for a change. They’ve had a pretty soft schedule. I’ve seen fans on this site say the Saints’ schedule is softer than Minnesota’s, but the Saints’ opponents they’ve defeated have a better record so far than the Vikings’.

Yes they lost that one. We had a 62 year old runnung back in Deuce McAllister, 4 turnovers, a terrible defense, and a blocked fg that was returned for a td. We have a few player upgrades as well. They still held AP to 32 yards rushing on 21 attempts.
They might not go undefeated but I am ready to see how they hold up down the stretch. With the Vikes on their heels for home field throughout I hope it keeps them focused. Favre against Brees will be a great matchup.

In case you haven’t noticed, the Saints are a bit improved since that last game. They have beaten a few other teams that have beaten them in the past. This is a whole new year. What happened last year, stays in last year.

The Saints of 2009 are WAY BETTER than the Saints of 2008. It isn’t even close. The offense has more balance and the defense is much, much better.
The score last year was 30-27 and we were not very good last year. And last year the Saints “terrible” defense held Adrian Peterson to 32 yards on 21 carries. The Saints defense is better this year and the Saints offense has more rushing yards in 2009 than the Vikings (1656 yards vs 1421 yards).
The Saints are a more complete team than 2008 and probably more complete than the 2009 Vikings. The Vikings live with Favre having the best season he has ever had. What happens when the “real” Favre shows up and he throws three picks in one game?

  27. mixman34 says: Dec 4, 2009 2:35 PM

    ^^^^^^
Honestly, I wouldn’t be so sure about that. As long as they have Minnesota nipping at their heels for home field advantage, they need to keep playing to win. This was not like New England in 2007, who was playing 110% in meaningless games as (admittedly) an “F U” to the haters and naysayers.
With the balance they have on both sides of the ball, they are arguably a more complete team than the Pats in 2007.
Also, since New Orleans is much more of a “feel good” story (post-Katrina), I don’t think the media is going to be as eager to try and sabotage the Saints as was the case two years ago (thanks again, John Tomase).

Let the Saints’ fans be cocky. If the wheels come of the wagon it will be a total wreck then. The way some people are acting it seems like the Saints are the best team the NFL has ever seen. They are a good team, but this is getting over the top. They beat a has been Patriot team and they act like they won the Superbowl. Let the season play out and after the Superbowl who ever wins can cock off.

Pretty high and mighty their VIC calling your self a real football fan. Well I have never liked Favre on any team am I not a real football fan? You are the worst kind of person because you are the type that looks down their nose at people who have a different opinion than you. I saved you some trouble, below is a link with the meaning of the word opinion: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/opinion+ As you will read (or have someone help you read) an opinion is not a fact. So for you to look down your nose and call your self a real football fan is a joke. Furthermore Favre is a joke. How many playoff games has he lost? He has won a single Super Bowl with the number 1 ratted defense and special teams as well as a great set of WRs. Meanwhile when people are arguing that Big Ben, Peyton Manning or Joe Montana aren’t nearly as good they always site how good the teams around them were when they won. Don’t get confused (that might be asking a lot) and think I am a Bears fan or just hate the Vikings. I don’t. I just hate people that are so arrogant they call them selves real football fans, you probably call your self a real American just because you like Glenn Beck.
    Pervyharvin -
Good stat but the Saints are a different team. If the Saints and the Vikings meet it will really come down to who can play better the Saints D-Line or the Vikings secondary. Right now I would say the Vikings secondary is not going to be good enough but that could change with some injuries at their end. Of course the same could be said for the Saints. As a Vikings fan would you want Brett Favre to play the rest of the schedule or do you want to rest him?

Rice and Shiancoe emerging as stars, Harvin looking ROY and of course Favre throwing. Some of you said you shut AD down last year. You did. Then what?Gus threw well. Can you concentrate on AD this year? Teams do and Favre scorches them. Good backs run on you(Jackson,Williams,Turner) Too many D backs against Favre,AD will get his. Brees is a guy I like and is dangerous as hell also. You guys are good, very good.
We are only on course now, hardly a sure thing. Would be a great game, and as all games go,less mistakes made by one team will win.

Just kidding on most of that. You are one of the few people (Vikings fans) here who makes at least some sense. I think the Saints are much, much better this year, while the Vikings are just better than last year. If you guys keep winning, we have no choice but to go 16-0 on the way to 19-0.

No, not at all. Last year our defense couldn’t stop a leaky sink, ST’s sucked much worse than this year, offense was good, but not good enough.
ST’s have improved slightly, O-line is finally blocking (a little bit), defense is much better and offense is good too.

Yes, you are right time will tell. I think anyone acting like they’re the best team of all time right now might be assuming too much. Let’s say they ‘run the table’, and they could. I sometimes compare being a Saints fan (I am) to being a Cubs fan (I’m not) in that you’re accustomed to losing. I can’t really identify with the Saints fans who are going over the top predicting 19-0. I still expect the worst because of all the times they’ve been cursed before.
I do, though, find it amusing how every time other fans set up some team that the Saints won’t be able to beat, as soon as they beat them, that team is no longer a legitimate test. Both New York teams were supposed to show the Saints for what they were. (I think they did.) Then it was, “They’ll be embarrassed by the Patriots. That’s the first real team they’ve played.” Now the Patriots are has-beens. I’m fine with that. The Saints players, especially on defense, seem to feed on the lack of respect they receive.
Here’s hoping the Saints have the chance to match up and test themselves this year against the Vikings … and then the Colts.
