Woodley explains Tomlin's "unleash hell" remark

After losing in overtime to the Ravens on Sunday night, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin peeled off a Gladiator reference, explaining that the team plans to “unleash hell” in December.

On Friday night, Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley explained the “unleash hell” remark to Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio.

Unfortunately, there will be no flaming arrows.

“I asked [Tomlin] that today in practice,” Woodley said, “what he meant by that.  He said, ‘We’re not going to sit back and get hit in the mouth.  We’re not going to be surprised by anything.  We’re going to do the attacking.  We’re going to throw the first punch.  That’s what that means. We’re bringing it.’  He smiled about it [when I asked], but I wanted to know what did he mean by that, and he told me what it was.”

The Raiders likely will get a more direct explanation on Sunday.

as a steelers fan im hoping that by “unleash” tomlin meant, “release”
and by “hell” he meant “bruce arians”

Right, at 6-5 are they that much better? The answer is no. The other answer is Chiefs.

It seems Tomlin does not read or study the Doctrine.
Unleashing Hell is not a good thing for mankind.
Hell and its Demons would love to destroy us all.
Calling “Demons” to beat the Raiders is quite comical.
    Raiders 20 Steeler Demons 13
Remember the Raiders beat the Bengals who in return swept Tomlins Black and Gold Demons twice.
Bye Bye Steelers no playoffs for you.
    Another Raider upset……..

  15. steelerfanforlife says: Dec 5, 2009 12:38 AM

  16. Jungle Juice says: Dec 5, 2009 12:52 AM

It is funny. “Unleash Hell” They may win out the season since they aren’t facing anyone all that good but, if they don’t, Tomlin’s remark will be replayed over and over as the overstatement of the season.

  17. Deb says: Dec 5, 2009 1:03 AM

I don’t care who’s next. The Chiefs and Bears should have been easy wins, too, and look how that turned out. It’s not about opponents, it’s about attitude. I’m glad Tomlin’s got it. I’m glad Tomlin said it. I’ll be really glad if the team starts living it.
    Love love love that man.

The reference was to December in general, as you’ll note above if you read it. Remaining games in December are: Oakland, Cleveland, Green Bay, and Baltimore. Upsets happen; you don’t want your team coming out flat. Green Bay and Baltimore aren’t exactly teams that you write off. If the Steelers have any serious intention of making it to the playoffs, it’s time to step things up somewhat and start covering areas that have been weaknesses throughout the year.
At the end of the day, I’m not sticking up for anyone else’s words, but from Tomlin’s perspective, I don’t see how anything he said is that incredibly ridiculous or funny.

  19. Mr.MondayNight says: Dec 5, 2009 2:13 AM

wow that was exactly what i was going to say. Bruce Arians shoulda been fired 2 years ago after the 8-8 season, terrible play caller. Its like they sat Berger down before the season telling him they were gonna make him into a Manning or Brady when really they should set up the pass with a run. Dixon had the balt. D more fooled last game when play action pass then berger has done all year, cause when berger has the ball its 80% pass.
Either way, the biggest problem is big plays on D, with Polamalu out, theres a huge hole in the secondary but common, if the D is holding teams to under 20, this O should be able to put up points. They should rack up 40 against oakland just to get their groove back.

  20. FayetteCounty says: Dec 5, 2009 2:34 AM

December consists of more than just the Browns and Raiders dummies.

  21. snnyjcbs says: Dec 5, 2009 3:36 AM

Lets hope rather than unleash hell they learn how to play some football. They are just a run of the mill team this year and do not look to be able to compete with the big boys. The Raiders did the knocking in the mouth last year and they were not any better than they are this year.

  22. Crip2knight says: Dec 5, 2009 4:12 AM

Boy oh Boy!!!!! I can see it now…… The Raiders can’t wait to show the Steelers that talk is cheap. Love the comment about talking trash to an 8 year old girl! LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. mborz says: Dec 5, 2009 6:37 AM

Tomlin’s team just doesn’t have anywhere the same “consistent intensity” that last year’s team did.
They’ve played well in some games (Vikings, Broncos) but have also looked totally lackluster in many others.
Given that the Lions went toe-to-toe with them and were still in the game until the very end, I’m not going to be impressed by any amount of talking by anyone at this point. They’ve done the “big talk” thing other times this season and failed to back it up.
    It’s time to stop talking.

  24. CD_Ridge says: Dec 5, 2009 7:30 AM

I wonder why the Steelers waited until now to unleash hell? I am a Steelers fan, these words mean nothing to me. How about blocking effectively and stop missing tackles and dropping coverage. The rest of the stuff takes care of itself. Unleash hell? yeah, whatever.

  25. Steeler-lady says: Dec 5, 2009 7:30 AM

Didnt the Raiders unleash hell on the bengals? Hmmmm
Im hoping the “unleash hell” means Harrison is gonna break someone in half ,Im sick of him being held all the time and nothin done about it.IF you dont believe it …watch a game before commenting. Even the commentators have noticed it alot.ITS BULLSHIT!
Im also hopin Arians is on his way out..Never liked him never will.

  26. ScoobyDooDoo says: Dec 5, 2009 7:55 AM

With a defense that cant stop 3rd and short or 4th and long, hell wont even help them. 9-7 isnt gonna make the playoffs.

  27. GoBrowns19 says: Dec 5, 2009 8:02 AM

Well if they decided to unleash hell at the beginning of the season, they would be undefeated. I guess Tomlin’s just a bad coach then.

  28. steeltownpride says: Dec 5, 2009 8:12 AM

Why even try at this point ? We are 6-5 , lose the rest of the games to get a higher draft pick . You cant win the SB every year . But what you can do is position yourself to get some big time help for the team . You need to replace Hampton , along with poss replacing Clark , parker etc . 6-10 gets you a better shot at getting a top nose tackle (Suh from Neb) or a top shelf left tackle . Colon might be gone as well .
The way this team is playing it will just finish 9-7 or 10-6 might make the playoffs but it will be an early exit from the playoffs . So big deal we make the playoffs and then you are out of the running for the good players early in the first round . Just loose the rest and go from there .

  29. iusedtobeteddybayer says: Dec 5, 2009 8:34 AM

    Hopefully. the same happens here.
Man, I cannot wit until the Steelers put together a couple shitty seasons in a row. You’ll see their “fanbase” get cut in half.

  37. darrius_heyward-bey-butterfingers says: Dec 5, 2009 11:09 AM

A strong fan base regardless of the record. I don’t need to trot out the numbers.
Nice try a$$, but you are just another one of the jealous maroons who knows nothing…just like Sgt. Schultz.

  39. Vox's Mommy says: Dec 5, 2009 12:03 PM

If that’s the way all Steeler fans think (and I know it’s not) then I’m embarassed to be one. That’s the most asinine thing I’ve ever heard. Bow out of the rest of the season to get a higher pick….LOSERS do that slick…and you have just shown yourself to be one. Get real.
People are taking this comment out of context. The full explanation of the comment was up above if you took the time to read it. It’s go time, we have no room for error, we have the talent to be great, but we’re not playing with heart right now. They’ve put themselves in a do or die situation right now…and from Tomlin’s perspective…he plans on doing, not dying. I just hope the rest of the team plays with that same mindset. The good thing about the Steelers is they don’t “put together a couple shitty seasons in a row”.
Anyone who tries to deny the talent on the roster is just kidding themselves b/c they don’t like the Steelers for one reason or another. Which is fine.

  40. cheeseweasel says: Dec 5, 2009 12:05 PM

Not going to unleash hell, they dont have it to unleash. Not the same team as last year.

  41. Deb says: Dec 5, 2009 12:29 PM

@steeltownpride … PLEASE change your name IF, that is, you are actually a Steelers fan, which I’m beginning to doubt. You just keep going on threads saying the season is over and we should just give up and lose to try and get better draft picks. I’d say you’re embarrassing us and the the team, but the team doesn’t feel that way and neither do 99 percent of the fans. You clearly have NO idea what the word “pride” means. One reason I love the Steelers so much is that they never gave up during the 80s when they sucked a lot of the time. They always gave it their all. You want a team that lays down like the Titans did for the Pats? How sad for you!
@jamaltimore … you’ve got to be the only dingdong on here who’s oblivious to the concussion discussion. That green kid nearly beat you. Instead of whining about not getting Roethlisberger, just be thankful for the gift. You’ll get him soon enough.
@trickbunny … Oh you’ve hopped over again. How cute. Our fan base remains pretty steady year in and year out. Meanwhile back at the Dog Pound … they’re giving away tickets. tsk-tsk.

  42. mborz says: Dec 5, 2009 12:56 PM

@steeltownpride: I’ll never understand the “let’s pack it in and get a high draft pick” mentality.
First, I don’t think, under any circumstances, any team should ever pack it in. It goes against everything a real teams stands for.
Second, the Steelers have done pretty well drafting lately and don’t need to do anything stupid to get higher picks. Look at all of the talent they’ve gotten without a single top-ten pick:
    2001 19 Hampton, Casey
    2002 30 Simmons, Kendall
    2003 16 Polamalu, Troy
    2004 11 Roethlisberger, Ben
    2005 30 Miller, Heath
    2006 25 Holmes, Santonio
    2007 15 Timmons, Lawrence
    2008 23 Mendenhall, Rashard
    2009 32 Hood, Evander

  43. dklein82 says: Dec 5, 2009 1:17 PM

i thought after the steelers lost at home to cincinnati that they were for sure going to ‘unleash hell’ on the chiefs.

  44. tleg81 says: Dec 5, 2009 2:00 PM

I love how people can make season ending judgements at this point in the season. If i remeber correctly, once your in the playoffs, all records go out the window.
Those of you who think the Steelers cant hang with the “big boys” are kidding yourselves. You are probably the same idiots who thought that a 6 seed had no chance in 2005.
Fact is, the Steelers still have the talent up and down the roster to play with anyone, and on occasion, they have shown all season that they can also play down with the competition. Do not forget the fact that they have not lost 1 game all season by more than 1 score. I still think Baltimore is extremely dangerous if they can sneak in the playoffs as well, based on the same information. Any team can win on any given week and I think this whole season has proven that across the NFL. Weird year across the board…..wait and see is all I can say…The Steelers can lose to the Chiefs and Bears and clobber the Chargers, and squeak by the Vikings…it happens every year, expect the unexpected.

  45. steeltownpride says: Dec 5, 2009 2:05 PM

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on my comments . However im not a blind faith homer Steeler fan . I see the reality of the way this team is playing . This team isnt much of a playoff caliber team right now . They have lost way to many games that they should have won this season . Its one of those bad seasons after winning a SB . No way you lose to the Chiefs and get swept by the Bengals . Or lose to the Bears like we did . Also keeping it close against the lonely Lions . Yet i need to still cheer for a dying cause ? Look im realistic in losing this season . Yes we have success in drafting middle of the draft to late in the draft . But when we picked Troy in 03 we was 6-10 . When we got Ben at 11 we were 5-11 . Needless to say those 2 players are the best on each side of the team .You dont get those caliber players when you finish 10-6 and make the playoffs . You get them losing .
I like winning Superbowls like everyone else does . But this season smells of 9-7 or 10-6 . Either just make or miss the playoffs . We wont finish winning our last 5 games SORRY . This team isnt like the 05 team was . That team was hungry and they had a singular purpose to win that season THE BUS . But please dont EVER question my faith or if im a real Steeler fan or not .

You’re still a loser LOL. Way to “pack it in”. Just b/c we want to see the team make the playoffs and realize we have a VERY real shot at that still happening….even if we don’t win all 5…we’re “blind faith homer Steeler fans”. Haha…you’re not doing a very good job of defending your lame comments. If we don’t start to get it together this week, yeah…we won’t make the playoffs and end up with mid round pick. But why not try? Like someone said above, records mean jack in the post season, everyone is 0-0. It’s not week 14, or 15. We CAN turn this around and make a strong run in the playoffs. I don’t see us being 1 and done either. It’s just frustrating seeing someone WANT to give it up. Troy and Ben are freaks of nature, not everyone picked that high comes in a contributes the way they have. They are the exception, not the rule…high draft pick or not.

DUDE, what’s with the eight year old girl refrence? Remember, the average steeler fan has an IQ of 54. NOW I don’t know you and I admit you could be a little higher or lower than that. Please just enjoy watching your team play and allow others to do the same. Keep a towel with you to wipe the drool. No playoffs this year. Now you try saying it.

I’m not a “blind faith homer” either. No, we can’t win the Super Bowl every year. But these players are paid a lot of money regardless of their record. I expect them to give their all EVERY SINGLE GAME. I’ve taken hard shots in life and even had to crawl, literally, to keep going. You don’t lay down and quit. Not if you’re 6-5. Not if you’re 0-11. PRIDE NEVER NEVER QUITS!
