In his first remarks regarding his departure from college football and his prospects for the future, Charlie Weis told a handful of the folks who cover Notre Dame football that he’ll return to pro football in 2010.
“I’m going to
coach in the NFL next year,” Weis said, per Jeff Jeffers of WNDU-TV. “I have no idea for who. All those stories
that there have been 100 teams that have contacted me; that’s a bunch
of garbage. First of all I wouldn’t talk to anyone until after I was
fired.”
He later said that he’ll make a decision on the future “after the dust settles,” which presumably means he’ll wait to see who gets fired and who gets hired and where the need for his services might be.
There’s also a chance (albeit remote) that he’ll be a candidate for a head-coaching job in the NFL.
The Patriots likely remain the favorites for his services. Indeed, Weis at one point said during the session that he and New England coach Bill Belichick “have never been closer.”
Meanwhile, Belichick recently indicated that a possible return by Weis is not “on the front burner.” Which implies that it’s on the back burner.
Weis also confirmed that he knew his time with the Irish would be ending even before the final game of the regular season.
“[T]the Monday
after the Connecticut game, it was over, and it was not a bad
conversation. [Athletic Director] Jack [Swarbrick] and I just sat down, closed the door,
and I said, ‘Look it, we’re grown men here. Where are we?’ And we
agreed to where this was headed. It was Thanksgiving week.”
We heard during the Stanford game that Weis already had cleaned out his office. The next question is where he’ll take the stuff he took out of his office.
Our money remains on Foxborough, until further notice.
MAYBE TC SHOULD CALL HIM, RIGHT NOW!
The Steelers probably could benefit from having an OC. Any OC. I still don’t understand why we never hired one after Whisenhunt left.
My bet is on New England or Miami…..Hope is Miami.
Green Bay!
The Bears may be an ideal spot for Weis to land. Bear’s OC, Ron Turner is expected to be let go after the season, and Cutler is the type of QB Weis like to work with.
Again Florio’s readers show how clueless they are -Bruce Ariens is the Steeler’s OC – has been since the Wiz went west…
No doubt at all it’s New England.
Buffalo will most likely not get one of the top head coaches and will probably end up with a second tier guy which is what I think Weiss is right now. I’d take Weiss over guys like Haslett and Trestman that have been talked about
@Igottz5onit – the Steelers promoted receivers coach Bruce Arians to offensive co-ordinator when Whisenhunt left. Arains was offensive co-ordinator before being hired as receivers coach by Cowher so its not like they gave the job to a first time offensive co-ordinator

He should really see if NBC would be able to use on on next season’s Biggest Loser.
EAGLES need him…. BAD….
I think the reason why Weis didn`t win enough in South bend is because he was to busy eating at the chocolate factory.
i hope that fat pig goes to STL and help out Spags
The Browns or New England.
“I said, ‘Look it, we’re grown men here.’”
Really? Why kind of grown man says “Look it” and especially to his boss? That sounds more like something a little kid would say to his parents while pointing at a walrus or polar bear at the zoo.
eagles. no way hey need the defence to start playing like it used to.
Arains was offensive co-ordinator of the Browns before being hired as receivers coach by Cowher is what I ment to say
He’d be a perfect fit for Buffalo with their…..culinary prowess.
It’s New England. The deal is all but done.
FumbleNuts, if you think Weis would go to that situation in Cleveland you are either an extremely wishful guy or a mid-day drinker.
Cleveland, because of Mangini, is now another Oakland.
Hope he doesn’t take a HC job. Better off as coordinator.
How can these guys keep trying to be head coach when it is apparent they don’t have it?
Can be a great O-Coord or a bad HC.
Hope he goes to NE too.
Weis says alot of things
Wow guys you really do not understand the subtlety of jibes at Bruce Arians I guess.
No, of course there should not be full-time officials. That’s ridiculous. What would they do the other 6 or 7 months of the year? Go to officiating sessions for 40-50 hours a week? … Insane.
Plus, the MLB and NBA seasons are set up differently, especially the MLB, which forces the job to essentially be full time. There are 162 regular season MLB games per team per season.
There are only 16 regular season games per team — once per week, usually — and then the short playoffs. Of course these individuals can have other jobs with all their time off. Or if they’re rich not have other jobs.
Referring to Mike Pereira talking about the imperfections of MLB and NBA officiating, namely talking about the MLB and NBA compared to NFL officiating … : “Well, maybe they make fewer mistakes.”
Well, maybe they make more mistakes. Well, maybe there is life that exists outside the solar system.
MLB had some very, very high-profile blunders this past season. Not a couple — a lot. We don’t need to go into the NBA, either.
That one sentence I’m talking about I’d try to think about. And if one believes there are “fewer” mistakes made my MLB umpires and NBA referees than NFL officials, then try to somehow prove it.
I call Shenanigans. (not be confused with Shanahanagans).
Charlie Weis is the same guy who sarcastically said “Really? It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy” when spygate erupted.
Belicheck, won’t forget that remark. He’ll string the oxygen thief along and then crush him.
You know, I wonder…
There’s a certain owner who loves to hire offensive-minded head coaches. He’s also desperate to make a splash, and looks set to fire his current coach at the end of the season.
Weis’ ego, based on the stories out of Notre Dame, seems to be big enough that he might be the biggest name crazy/stupid enough to take on the challenge of coaching for said owner.
Call me insane, crazy, stupid, whatever you want, but I think there’s a better-than-even chance that Charlie Weis ends up as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders next year. If he has any desire to be a head coach again, that’s probably his only shot.
Would love to see him in Chicago. Would be a great addition along with a new coach and new GM. Ok I know asking alot for this Christmas.
My crazy prediction…
Weis goes to Oakland as Head Coach.
So, his phone hasn’t been ringing off the hook, but he’s sure an NFL team will hire him next year. He sounds pretty sure of himself after getting fired from a college job, IMO.
And, no, SlimPickens, he won’t be coming to St. Louis – the Rams need to spend any available money on players, not coaches.
Wow. That would make the Patriots really good, what with the decided schematic advantage, and all.
Charlie Weiss is a good man, a good coach and you asses that talk about his weight or appearance need to check yourselves. Let it go Jerks. He ran a play that a sick boy asked for, even though it was not a good call. Look it up and tell me what you have done!!! Come to Tampa Charlie!!!!!
I look for Weis to go somewhere within the Belichik tree. I don’t see a connection to the Bears or Oakland but both could do worse. I still think OC somewhere with a Belichik guy or New England.
head coach in cleveland.
look for the browns to hire this loser. what is it with lerner and the worthless branches from the cheating belichuck tree? the only reason this loser weis did any good was that he knew the plays that the defense was calling? what a loser.
@SoFlorSteelers and Tsmith …
Good grief, Igottz5onit–who is a well-informed fan–was being sarcastic! A lot of Steelers fans think Bruce’s playcalling is lacking. Did you boys just fall off the turnip truck?
@Igottz5onit …
Yeah, but do we really want Belichick’s buddy in our locker room? Sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don’t.
he will never have a hc job in the nfl he proved that at ND hes a good oc but thats all he will end up in N E bc of his roots there! plus N E is in contention every yr for a championship he has 3 with them already why not try to get more he need to rebuild his rep after tarnishing it at ND
BRADY-WEIS…… BRADY MVP again?
I hope Fatty McButter Pants ends up in Miami!

LMFAO, those “clueless fans” are all Steelers fans, classic, a Steeler fan calling a Steeler fan clueless….. The Steelers fans have been calling for Ariens’ head for months
A Belichick-Weis-Crennel reunion would be interesting.
If anyone hires his big butt for a HC needs to be shot. He cant handle the college game, but he can handle the NFL head job………..hehehe. I would take him in a heart beat for the OC job for the Bengals. I would love to see a mix to the play calling now run run pass, run run pass, run run pass. He has no one calling him for HC jobs I would bet. Anyone calling is for OC calling duties.
Ehh, not a fan
The Jaguars could sure use him as Offensive coordinator . Anything or anyone is better that what we are doing now.
I know he wants to go back to the NFL, but after watching the Big 12 title game just now, Nebraska should throw whatever money it takes to convince him to come there as OC. A Weiss run offense with that monster defense would be unstoppable.
The Bills will keep Fewell as head coach and pay Charlie as much as him to be the OC. Then they will get Haslett to be the DC>
Probably because there aren’t 100 nfl teams, fat ass.
If Weis becomes our OC, i’ll start saving for a segway so he can come from the locker room, to the field, and up and down the sidelines, and to the concessions for a couple slices of pizza and an XL diet coke with a side of cholestorol
Think he should take at least 1 year off…dlodown1…I’m not a bears fan…but your right. Lovie be gone 2. Maybe Cowher(HC)/Weis(OC)???
Thank you Deb… You are awesome. Yeah I was just making a joke, honestly I think we could do better than Ariens though, there has to be a some undiscovered OC talent out there somewhere. The funny thing is that sometimes it just seems as though Ariens has terrible luck. But nobodys luck could be that consistently bad.
Hide the buffet, he’s back!
@Igottz5onit …
Sometimes Arians calls great games, then the next week and it’s like he’s lost his mind. But I don’t see Tomlin getting rid of him. He’s got a ring and Ben loves him. If he’d just call a more balanced run/pass game, I’d be happy. We should look at the o-line coach. Things haven’t been the same since Grimm left. No matter what Ben says about how long he holds the ball, sometimes those guys miss their blocking assignments and the pocket collapses right after the snap. Consistently missing assignments seems to be a coaching issue.
Weis may be an offensive guru–couldn’t really see his gifts at ND–but it’s hard to imagine a Belichick guy on Tomlin’s staff.
Honestly, who would want this guy? ND sucked under him and the Pats O got better after he left. Yet, everyone proclaims him to be some sort of O wizard.
The hype around this guy reminds me of Norv Turner and Dave Wannestat (sp??) – both of which have been riding off of being associated with Jimmy Johnson for decades now, even though they have done very little themselves.
Lastly, the guy is a slice of pizza from a heart attack!
The new trifecta…Bill Parcells, Charlie Weiss and Al Groh will be the most sought after group this offseason.
Charlie knows this. Once again attaching himself to the Parcells wagon, he has no doubt of his return to NFL sidelines next year…
