Concussions could end Clifton Smith’s season

Tampa Bay Buccaneers return man Clifton Smith suffered his second concussion of the season on Sunday, and the Bucs don’t want to risk him suffering a third.

So Bucs coach Raheem Morris says the team is going to be extremely cautious with Smith, and it’s possible he won’t play again until 2010. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Smith could be placed on injured reserve.

Smith suffered the concussion when he took a shot to the head on the opening kickoff against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. His previous concussion also came against the Panthers, when Dante Wesley drilled him on a punt return, a hit that had the Bucs talking last week.

With Smith out, rookie receiver Sammie Stroughter will handle returns.
