A day after the Redskins blew a shot at an upset for the ages of the Saints due in large part to Shaun Suisham’s shank of a 23-yard field goal attempt that would have given the Redskins a 10-point lead with less than two minutes to play, the ‘Skins are considering a change.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Redskins are making plans to kick the tires on other kickers.
Graham Gano is due to visit later this week. Others are expected, too.
Depending on how it all shakes out, Suisham’s miss might have been the last one he ever makes in a Redskins uniform.
This should have been done after he missed a crucial kick against the Seahawks during the playoffs two years ago. He’s a bum… get’em outta yee!
Yes Suisham is struggling now, But he is still young and has many good years ahead of him, baring an injury. I dont think Suisham should be the scape goat. This will not be the first time the Redskins didnt have patience with kickers and release one who ended up being a great kicker in the league. Can anyone say David Akers. He was with the redskins in 1999 for one game, missed two FG and adios.. Then the Eagles picked him up and he is STILL playing and doing well for the Eagles.
Who else will the skins get thats any good, thats not a week away from taking Geritol and collecting social security? They need to have more patience with young talent and build the team of the future. The present is DONE with the redskins. Nothing is going to save them this year…
What lost the game for the redskins was the coaches. The possesion that the Saints had, in which Brees threw an interception and then the ball was plucked from the skins and ran into a touchdown should have NEVER HAPPENED! The redskins were STUPID for taking the penalty and making it 2-15 and not 3-10. If it would have been 3-10 and the same next play happened, it would have been 4-28 for the Saints, not 3-28. So it was the stupid call of the coaches that lost the game for the redskins. Suisham should have NEVER been put in the pressure in this game.
Sonny jurgesen says, its the coaches that lose games, and he is right!
Might as well bring in a new FB, dime back, and SS well ur at it.
Mike Sellers, Kareem Moore and Laron Landry all shit the bed yesterday; coughing up the ball or giving up huge plays down field.
Yea sushim shanked the 23 yarder but he was the only player scoring points in some of our games this year.
Bringing in kickers on a 3-9 team is laughable.
Wouldn’t the Redskins be doing Suisham a favor by releasing him?
Plus he missed a chip shot against the Cowboys 2 weeks ago that would have put the Skins up 9-0. Instead they lose 7-6.
You just should not miss a 23 yarder in the NFL.
Not that I particularly wish Suisham to keep his job, but former Pro Bowl long-snapper Ethan Albright took blame for the miss with a high snap.
Obviously, Suisham’s misses at Dallas don’t help his case any though.
Gano is due to make a visit last week?? I’m confused.
If the Redskins got rid of their players that are under-performing, there wouldn’t be anyone left.
Florio – I know we are all suffering as Skins fans but drinking during the day is not the answer…
First “Larry” Sellers and now “Graham Gano is due to visit last week. Others are expected, too.”
Good god Man!
Dont forget the two missed kicks that cost us the cowboys game a couple weeks ago.
Graham Gano is due to visit last week? I think you mean THIS week.
What an idiot that kicker is. The sad thing is that everybody watching knew for a fact that he would miss the FG because that is just how bad the Skins are.
Graham Gano is due to visit last week.
Huh?
I dont understand why he was still employed. Historically, the worst kicker in the league generally gets FIRED!
If that dick has a job next week, I’ll do something! Not sure what, because they all suck. But I’ll def write a strongly worded post or something.
“If the Redskins got rid of their players that are under-performing, there wouldn’t be anyone left.”
The above comment says it all and is spot on accurate.
Would this organization be in a better position is we switched out Shaun Swisham — who admittedly missed a couple crucial kicks this year, but overall has been doing an above average job OR would the organization be better off if it focused on the real problem with this team — namely the fact that Vinny Cerato needs to be fired and a solid GM with real authority needs to be hired.
Laron Landry should be to blame just as much. If he worked on his pass coverage as much as he did his celebrations after a routine tackle, they would have won. Awful player
They should have cut him in the locker room after the game. Unless you have a “high end” kicker, which there are few of, no kicker should be allowed to cost a team a game that way. He didn’t miss a 50 yarder. I CAN KICK A 23 yrd FG. I know because I’ve done it. And I’m not a kicker, especially an NFL kicker. Too many guys out there that can make that kick every time. NEXT.
Shaun is the least of the skins problems.
Inside 39 yards Shaun is a 89% feild goal kicker (55-62). Thats not to shabby. The missed 23 yard field goal was the first of his career inside 29 yards.
The skins just suck and if there is a way to lose they will find it.
I think something needs to be said about Jim Zorn. He’s been pretty much stripped of all of his duties as a HC and is pretty much garaunteed to be fired at the end of the season. Yet somehow he manages to rally his troops to play hard and with confidence week in and week out. Granted they haven’t been able to finish these games but they are playing really hard for him even tho they have no shot at advancing into the postseason. Kudos to Jim Zorn on hanging in thru such adverse conditions.
Suisham has sucked since he’s been with the team. It’s mind-blowing that the Redskins kept him even after completing a season as the official worst kicker in the NFL.
He should have been cut years ago. Suisham never makes clutch kicks, even when they’re from only a few yards out. See the Cowboys game, which the Skins also win if Suisham doesn’t choke.
Reliable kickers aren’t that hard to find. Every kicker in the league is better than Suisham. I’d even work out Steve Hauschka and see where he compares with this scrub of scrubs.
yes redskins fans, this is why your team is terrible. its all the kickers fault. hell if you find the right guy you could finish the season undefeated and go into next season as the super bowl favorites.
If there were any good kickers out there they would already have a job. He can’t seem to make the kicks that are important, but right now now they won’t be able to find anyone better. Put kicker on the long list of needs for next years team.
“If the skins only had a reliable field goal kicker they would be in the SUPERBOWL”. I hear redskin 1 warming up and Danny’s ready to head to INDY to pay Adam Vinitari 100 million dollars so the skins can be ready for next year! Can’t wait till this offseason
How about fat albert laying on the ground and giving the saints a Timeout when they had none. Fact is skins actually played very well the past couple of weeks but top to bottom they are NOT Good enough to beat good teams! their so called stars are worse than the 3rd string no names. Maybe danny could learn something here but I doubt it. He’ll rebuild the team and fire everyone rather than letting go the HIGH PRICED dead weight and continuing with coach who may just be figuring things out.
We’re a bad team no matter what, but if we had a decent kicker we would have beat the Cowboys and Saints in 2 of our last 3 games. The truth is this team had Philly on the ropes too and ought to be 6-6 even accepting the early season slip ups. If the skins had a legit coach they would be right around .500 but they don’t. If they had a real kicker they’d be 5-7 but they don’t. This guy has missed every clutch kick he’s ever had an opportunity to kick from the playoff 30 yarder against the Seahawks two years ago, to the 42 yarder he left short last year, to the two misses against Dallas and the miss yesterday. He’s terrible. A high school kicker can make that kick 85% of the time, a pro kicker it shouldn’t even be a question.
As a long suffering Saints season ticketholder, I can empathize with y’all. I wouldn’t be too hard on Suishan, tho’. I think the guy that cost the ‘Skins the game was Moore. Once he caught that interception, he shold have hit the ground when he saw so many Saints’ jerseys. Letting Meachem strip the ball away was just plain dumb.
As for kickers, we have John Carney on the roster, one of the best ever. But lately he has missed some chips shots so we are back to last year’s kicker.
Even Carney misses. In one memorable game (in 2004, I think) the Saints had completed a miracle last play of the game with a 20 yard forward pass, 3 laterals and a devastating block by QB Aaron Brooks to spring the last receiver for a TD. Score 21-20. After endles replay review the TD is confirmed. Carney then misses the PAT and we lose 21-20.
Shit happens.
What was up w/ LaRon Landry celebrating after almost every play …. even after the ones where they just got torched for a big gain or a first down?
yeah he seemed more concerned with his stat stuffing then the team….. maybe thats the redskins problem
He’s a worthless kicker on a worthless team. non-story
Whoa… For Jim Zorn to keep these players into games with their record says something about his coaching… The players seem to be all behind him, so why blame him… He also has the 2nd year receivers playing lights out… For all that’s happened the last four or five weeks, Zorn and Campbell have showed that they deserve to get another chance with the Redskins… Plus you have to think, who wants to come coach the Redskins with JACKASS Daniel Snyder and DUMB ASS Vinny Cerato in the front office… If you thought for one second that Cowher, Gruden, Shanahhan or any other big name coach is gonna sign with the Redskins your delirious… the Redskins would be the final stop for any top ranked coaches next offseason… with that said why would you get rid of Zorn just to have another short-term coach to come in and give Campbell a fourth offense to he had to learn in five years, and set back the progress that the second year receivers are making… the smart thing for the front office to do following this season is to make sound decisions in signing of resigning free agents, and drafting offensive lineman, defensive tackles, a cornerback, and a safety in the 2010 draft.
and if anyone should get the blame it should be “DO YOUR JOB” SELLERS SCREWING UP ANOTHER KEY PLAY… or Kareem Moore, somebody must of told him his name was Deangelo Hall… Please draft Taylor Mays… and one more thing… Landry is not Sean Taylor and will never be, the Redskins need to seriously evaluate his future with the organization
Once a kicker reveals himself to be susceptible to the ol’ esophageal occlusion he’s got it forever. Cut him now, he’s a loser and always has been.
All he had to do was make that simple little kick…just aim it slightly to the left…but he kicks it straight and misses.
The Saints had no more timeouts…they would have had to get a TD…get the onside kick…drive down and get a FG to tie it in less than 2 minutes.
He has been good before the last few games…but when the smallest bit of pressure is on he turns into Scott Norwood.
that is a hilarious post…if the skins got rid of all the underperformers they could not field a team…..i agree as half that team should be replaced. they could not make the arena football league…bums.
MacDaddy: Suisham can not have many good years ahead of him because he has never been good. He misses these short field goals often and he never hits long ones. Look at his career stats of 50+ yds: 3-9. And career 79.5 % overall kicks. Thats awful. He should have been gone 2 years ago. Awful awful awful
“The missed 23 yard field goal was the first of his career inside 29 yards.”
I’d point out that PAT’s are withing the 29 yard line too, but the way the ‘Skins are playing this year, dude hasn’t kicked too many of those this year.
He gets a pass.
Somebody back there mentioned fatassalberthaynesworth laying there giving the saints another timeout, in effect. Bravo for catching that. Also at 2:09 in the game the redskins should have let it tick to the 2 minute warning, instead they ran another play. The the warning stopped the clock. They could have cost the saints another 45 seconds and NO ONE has mentioned that………Plus on the sellers fumble, if a redskin picked it up and ran for a td after the whistle, it would have been called back. the saint didn’t pick it up until after the whistle. A loose ball at the whistle should belong to the last player to touch it, right? robbed by the refs……
