Chargers, Bengals, Vikings, Cardinals can clinch playoff berths

With four weeks to play in the 2009 regular season, two NFL teams have made it to the postseason, and four more can join them this weekend.

The Chargers get in with a win and three different combinations of events:  (1) Ravens loss or tie, Steelers loss or tie, Jets loss or tie, and Dolphins loss or tie; (2) Ravens loss or tie, Steelers loss or tie, Jets loss or tie, and Patriots loss or tie; or (3) Ravens loss or tie, Steelers loss or tie, Jaguars tie, and Patriots loss.  The Chargers also clinch with a tie, if the Ravens, Steelers, Jets, and Dolphins lose.

The Bengals win the AFC North by beating the Vikings, or it the Ravens and Steelers each lose.  (Cincy also wins the division for the first time since 2005 with a tie and a Ravens loss or tie and a Pittsburgh loss or tie.)

The Vikings clinch the NFC North with a win over the Bengals and a Green Bay loss to the Bears.  Minnesota also gets a playoff spot with a win, or with a tie and a Giants loss.

The Cardinals win the NFC West by beating the 49ers.

Also, the Colts can turn on top-seed cruise control with a win or a tie, a Bengals loss, and a Chargers loss, and the Saints get a first-round bye with a win or a tie, or with a Cowboys loss or tie, an Eagles loss or tie, and a Cardinals loss or tie.

“The Vikings clinch the division with a win over the Bengals and a Green Bay loss to the Packers.”
I can’t wait to hear this quote after the game: “The Packers didn’t beat us. We beat ourselves” — Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers following his team’s loss to the Packers.

  2. Voice_Of_Reason says: Dec 8, 2009 10:42 AM

Uh, proofread. You have the Bengals winning the NFC (they are in the AFC) and you have the Vikings winning if Green Bay loses to the Packers (they can’t play themselves).

What is wrong with this portion?

  4. CR9 says: Dec 8, 2009 10:45 AM

So the Bengals win the NFC if they beat the Vikings? The Vikings win the division if they beat the possible NFC champ Bengals and Green Bay loses to the Packers? Got it!

well, I guess the Packers could technically beat themselves next week in Chicago.

M a Bengals fan and never knew they were in the NFC. Interesting……

  8. CurseofBoJackson says: Dec 8, 2009 10:49 AM

Green Bay loss to the Packers? C’mon man, I know you get busy, (ha, unintended) but that’s bad. To the guy(s) saying this game against the Vikes means nothing to either team, check your head. This is a gut check for both teams and a way to lock up their respective divisions. It means a lot, SD can up end the Bengals for the other bye if we lose the next two, and really, they might have a chance to do so even if we go 1-1 next two weeks.
Saints have it easy, would love for the Bengals to play in the NFC.

I can definitely see Green bay beating the Packers… after watching the Vikings beat themselves (stop snickering, Florio)

  10. footballrulz says: Dec 8, 2009 10:51 AM

Oh, I doubt very seriously that Green Bay will lose to the Packers. They know each other too well.

It’s a tragedy that so many others were able to throw jabs at you for your piss-poor proofreading skills this AM before I had a chance to. What gives, Mike? Having trouble sleeping at night ever since you did that one NBC short (PFTV Extra?) with eye-candy Tiffany on the other end of the feed?

  17. ramone says: Dec 8, 2009 11:15 AM

But if Green Bay DOES beat the Packers, doesn’t that mean that the Packers beat Green Bay? And the Bengals win the NFC, are the Saints the #2 seed? Or do the Saints then win the AFC? What happens to the Colts in that scenario?
    ..my head hurts.

  18. goetta-head says: Dec 8, 2009 11:16 AM

  19. Slappy says: Dec 8, 2009 11:17 AM

Actually if the Bengals win, they will have swept the NFC North and obviously already swept the AFC North.. SO you can just say the Bengals Own the North..

  20. contraryguy says: Dec 8, 2009 11:18 AM

After reading this train wreck of a playoff proposal, it got me all confused. Confused to the point that I totally forgot who the Packers ACTUALLY play this next week.
Could you imagine Florio’s court transcripts? Man, the judge’s who had his cases probably demanded a raise just for putting up with the twisted developments.
Judge- “So Mr. Florio, you are telling the courts here today that the victim killed herself and then set the house on fire?”

  25. Deb says: Dec 8, 2009 12:22 PM

Mike, are you having a bad day? Can’t say I blame you. These formulas always give me a headache. It would be so much better if we could just win, baby, and determine our own destiny. But that path is closed now for my Steelers … if we manage to find any path at all.
Don’t really care what you do with the NFC. But please give us back the Bengals. We don’t like them, but they’re our rivals and it would be a little tough to tangle with the cats regularly if they were off winning the NFC. And then we’d have to miss all those lovely fans like bunker. How could you deprive us of such charm and grace?
On the other hand, if who_dey_kid happens to check in on this thread … thanks for yesterday!! I really appreciated it.

  27. Vikes-N-Favre says: Dec 8, 2009 12:45 PM

To the moron Packer fans, the Vikings still have a 3 game lead over your ass Packers in the division, and Rodgers has more INT’s then Favre, and less TD passes. AD may have more fumbles then your shitty RB group, but he has more yards, and is wayyyyyyyy better then anything your team has produced in forever.
The Vikings have better players, and obviously the better team. Our only two losses this year came at the hands of the defending SB Champion Steelers (which would have been a win had it not been for a horse shit tripping penalty as Favre was throwing a TD pass to Rice) and the defending NFC Champion Cardinals. Where is the shame in that? Our only two losses came at the hands of the two teams playing in the SB last year.
However, your Packers have lost twice to the Vikings (which was expected) the Bengals, and the damn Bucs. So please, stop with your delusional posting about how GB is better then the Vikings. Its not even close to being true, and just because we lost only our 2nd game in 3 months doesn’t mean we are headed for disaster, it means we had a bad game and they will get on track this week. The last time this team lost a game, they won 5 in a row. Just worry about yourself and your team. They still play the Bears in Chicago, and the Steelers. Good luck with that.

  28. Calistin says: Dec 8, 2009 1:06 PM

    Vikes and Rent-a-QB,
Rodgers leads the league in rushing yardage and rushing td’s. Favre has one less int and one more td. Not like we are talking a huge difference here. Only huge diffence is that we will have Rodgers for the next decade as where your band wagon ass fans only get to enjoy Favre for one year, two tops.
Fact is your 3 paragraph spew is nothing more than fear. That weak feeling in your knees and anger in your gut is telling you something we all already know. The Packers are hot and the Vikings are not.
Put that in your meth pipe and smoke it, ya purple sporting lil handbanger. Talk about delusional, any Vikings fan that thinks they won’t choke like every year….

I’m seriously hoping your post is meant to be sarcastic otherwise you need to pay a bit more attn son. Lord Florio almost ALWAYS gets scooped by any other site, including and most often by ESPN. I’ve been following this site since the preseason and I don’t think he has EVER gotten a scoop, mostly posts rumors (hence the title “Latest News and Rumors”) and also most often tries (lamely) to try to create controversy where there is none.
All that said, Lord Florio needs to keep his kid away from the computer!

Really, Calistin, bragging about Rodgers’ rushing prowess? What’s next, are you going to brag about how great of a kicker Donald Driver is? Why don’t you take Rodgers’ rushing yards and TD’s, subtract out the yards lost and drives killed by Rodgers’ 45 sacks, and tell me what you come up with?
And seeing as how I’ve given you a math problem to figure out, I suspect we won’t be hearing from you for days. I’ve seen your math skills at work (Rodgers 7 INTs -Favre’s 5 INTs=1 according to you).
