Redskins waive Suisham, sign Gano

On Sunday Shaun Suisham missed an easy field goal that would have given the Washington Redskins a win over the New Orleans Saints.

Today Suisham is out of work.

Jason Reid of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins waived Suisham and signed kicker Graham Gano.

Gano won the Lou Groza award as the best kicker in college football last year at Florida State, but he wasn’t drafted this year and was released after a training camp tryout with the Baltimore Ravens. After the Ravens let him go he signed with Las Vegas of the UFL, where he scored the first points in the UFL, kicked the longest field goal in the UFL, and kicked the game-winning field goal in the UFL championship game.

And that means the Redskins now have the best kicker in UFL history on their roster. So they’ve got that going for them, which is nice.

What? Someone in D.C. was held accountable? That a boy! We are on our way!
    HAIL SUCKA!

I am happy for Gano. I actually had hoped he would have been the kicker for the Ravens instead of Hauschka at the beginning of the season.

  4. BigMikeSkinsFan says: Dec 8, 2009 1:30 PM

I dont care if Gano sucks…Suisham has proven himself as a failure and someone who chokes when it counts the most. He should have been cut at the end of last season!!
And Boudin…it WOULD have won the game because they would have needed 2 scores in less then 2 minutes with no timeouts.

  5. boysroll says: Dec 8, 2009 1:33 PM

he would have made it i am sure the skins would have found a way to lose it anyway….joke of an org.

Don’t worry Mr. Smith, I picked up on the Caddyshack reference. I like it.

Green Bay needs an upgrade at kicker. I think the Packers need to bring Suisham in.

Now, only if Danny boy would only hold himself to the same standards. Can you cut yourself? LOL. DANNY PLEASE SELL THE TEAM. OR put it in a blind trust and move the the islands. Just please free our beloved Redskins from your grip of death!!!!

@Boudin: I’m an Eagles fan who has no love for the Redskins, and after watching the Saints crush my Eagles, I have nothing but respect for them . That said, I think it’s safe to say that had the Redskins led the Saints 33-23 with 1:52 left(the score if the FG had been good) , they WOULD have won the game. I know that I was watching the game with a friend on Sunday and can tell you that as soon as he missed a 23 yarder that we both commented it was the end of Suisham’s days in DC.

  15. Turk says: Dec 8, 2009 2:01 PM

Finally! Now we have the player that will lead us to victories! Listen, I am not looking to defend Suisham but this is a poor excuse for a fall guy for that loss. Why does Karem Moore still have a job? Why does Ethan Albright still have a job? And I could go on and on and on …
HIRE A GM WITH A SOLID TRACK RECORD AND REAL AUTHORITY TO MAKE SOUND FOOTBALL PERSONNEL DECISIONS AND GIVE THAT PERSON THE AUTHORITY HE NEEDS TO UNDO THE MYRIAD OF MISTAKES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE DURING THE DANNY/VINNY ERA!
UNTIL THEN — BOYCOTT THE REDSKINS!!!

Best kicker in UFL? Longest kick..Wow he must be good…You guys blowing the UFL is getting uncomfortable to read..I know I speak for most and say please don’t mention that crap and NFL together. Its more legit to your readers to say from Flordia State than Las Vegas..

But hey, when 52 players are giving the guy the old soap wrapped up in the towel beat down in the locker room, he’s gotta go!!!!!!!!!

  18. isonic1 says: Dec 8, 2009 2:11 PM

    marshall70,
Sure, bring him in so he can choke on crucial kicks. He’s good when theres no pressure but kills you when there is.

  19. Boudin says: Dec 8, 2009 2:12 PM

the Saints went 80 yards in 30 secs. onside kick it and we might have won it in regulation. 1 minute and 19 seconds is a long time…

Do you really know deep down , I mean KNOW, that the Saints wouldn’t have scored a TD in say 30 something seconds, kick and recover an onside kick and score another TD in say, 30 something seconds again?
The Saints almost won the game in REGULATION! We intercepted and our guy stepped out of bounds. He almost took it to the house.
The Redskins are riding with the same bad MOJO that used to float around with the Saints for a couple of decades or so. I have seen these games from the other side too many times. The Redskins were going to lose no matter what. Bank it!!
I think it was too bad that they cut the kicker. To say that he cost them the game any more than say, LaRon Landry is just leaving in a dream world. But, I think the Redskins may be doing just that because when it looked to the radio broadcast team that the Redskins were moving into position to “ice” the game, they chose……..LaRon Landry as the Defensive MVP for the game! How clueless is that!!!

  24. chunky soupy sales says: Dec 8, 2009 2:56 PM

Suisham once kicked for Dallas. Could Dallas interest the Redskins in Nick Folk?

  26. BigBaldPapaHawk says: Dec 8, 2009 3:07 PM

The kicker deserves blame just as much as anyone else, but placing all the righteous indignation on the kicker is a real chickenshit move at best.
Let’s not mention the defense that could not hold ground for less than two minutes to seal the deal. Let’s just make a lot of noise and fire the kicker.

  27. chunky soupy sales says: Dec 8, 2009 3:10 PM

agreeing with Turk and adding another
Why does Laron ” whiff” Landry still have a job?
Dude misses more tackles than… something that misses a LOT of tackles. I’ll tell you that.
Had he not gotten burned for two TD’s it would have never come down to any kicker.

  28. Beezer says: Dec 8, 2009 3:25 PM

Good this was the missing piece now the skins can go on the superbowl run that Florio predicted.
Marshall70, Crosby is a good kicker. I would rather have them on my team than our current kicker.

your guy almost took it to the house like Moore almost didnt fumble. You got 2 VERY lucky plays to get those TDs so dont push it with some almost took it to the house.
lets say you did score a TD, you would have to go on a wish and a prayer for the onsides kick. Lets ask Philly how well that works against us.
and if we had the ball back we run it. You had 0 timeouts left and with 3 running plays even if we dont get the first we put you so deep in your own territory that we can hold you in (damn I hate saying it) prevent defense.
but its all wishes and coulda beens now.

  30. Igottz5onit says: Dec 8, 2009 3:55 PM

wait are they trying to only hire players with alliterations for names? Didn’t Adam Archuleta play for them? Maybe that is their problem. They should branch out more.

  31. HowEyeRoll says: Dec 8, 2009 4:02 PM

We may have had an awful season so far but we’ve come the closest to beating the Saints then any other team so far. You hear me Pats fans? They tore yr asses up. Love to see how the Cowgirls do against them.

  32. SF Saints Fan says: Dec 8, 2009 4:09 PM

    BigMikeSkinsFan:
I’m just saying your team is running with some very bad mojo. We have been there before, for a very long time. You would not believe the ways I have seen the Saints lose over the decades.
And I really think making the kicker the scapegoat is taking the easy road out to please the fans. The Saints got pressure from the left, it was not a great snap or hold, and they may have put a finger on the ball.
The Defense, on the other hand, gave up an 80 yards drive in 30 something seconds. LaRon Landry looked like he couldn’t cover himself with a towel. He hits like a dump truck full of rocks, but he plays like his skull is full of rocks.

  33. BigMikeSkinsFan says: Dec 8, 2009 4:19 PM

he isnt the scapegoat but we have a lot less to lose with him then we would with laron landry being cut. suisham was horrible last year as well…check his stats and should have been cut then.

  34. golongboyee says: Dec 8, 2009 4:30 PM

Hey……….He just kicked a 50 year field goal……..Gano if it is good or not?

  35. OranjelloJones says: Dec 8, 2009 4:48 PM

Oh shut it Saints fan’s that kick goes in and yes you LOSE. The Skins get it back with 1:52 left and run 3 times, that’s right run as in no passes as in no interception of JC. Assuming you stop them (that’s a big assumption since your D hadn’t all game) you get the ball back with 30 seconds left. If you don’t and the Skins continue down the field like they were you’re actually probably down 13 (if not 17) not ten points and then you’d need 2 TD’s to win or get back into it. I don’t care what kind of karma you’re dealing with, your team wasn’t getting 14 points in 30 seconds.
Savor it, I would but don’t make yourself look like clueless idiots by actually talking smack about how that went down. The Redskins gifted it no doubt but after that amazingly bogus fumble call on Sellars you’d be wise to just shut your pie holes and be happy you got the gift you did.
Oh and one other thing, 12-0 is nice and all but your team has yet to win jack squat so it might help to actually have them bring something home before you start doling out advice on what it takes to be a top notch organization. Again they’ve had a nice run and look prepped for it to continue but until they do you’re just another never was that hasn’t won a damn thing yet.

  36. smiley says: Dec 8, 2009 5:40 PM

The guy deserved to be cut…most of you non-Redskin fans are looking at one game…we’ve seen this kind of play from him in a playoff game…among others….he’s cut. Hail!

Oranjeelojones: While I agree that if the FG was good, the Skins win ( I said that in an earlier post) don’t forget that if the kick was good, the Skins would be kicking off to the Saints at 1:52; it would be the Saints ball , no JC , no running game , just the Saints offense trying to come back from 33-23 down with the clock running out.

I agree we have not won anything yet.
The call was correct according to current NFL Rules. If you didn’t like the call, maybe you should take it up with the NFL Rules Commission.
And you are dealing with some pretty bad mojo.
And your organization WAS one of the best…….now you have Snyder.

  41. CH³NO² says: Dec 8, 2009 8:40 PM

So why doesn’t Laron Landy get cut? He got burned for TD’s on double moves TWICE and to me that’s what lost the damn game.
That guy gets burnt more often than my toast in the morning!
