Weis and Mangini are oil and water. Weis is regarded by many as one of the best OCs in both college and pro.
GM – Holmgren
HC – A new hire Mike Tomlin style ass kicker who still has players respect – (A younger version of Jim Brown)
Weis – OC
Ryan – DC
Bernie – PR at most

I tend to agree with the notion that Mangini is here to get bargain basement players, for this season anyway.
The Browns are on the hook for Crennel and Savage’s contracts. And DA is due a $5M roster bonus (or some type of bonus) in January of 2010.
Lerner has to stop the bleeding of money and spend another year or two paying things down. I don’t care how much money he has, he did not get there by making bad money decisions year after year.
Kosar is now working off his $1.5M he owes to Lerner, so consider that a “pre-paid” GM. Plus, Kosar has an idea about running sports teams, he may not be the best, but not the worst.
Lerner just hired Fred Nance today for his “legal council” group. I think this has more to do with getting out of paying Kokinis’s contract than anything else. Nance is a real sharp guy, and will add to the organization as “other” support.
Robiskie has been inactive most of the games this year because the Browns do not want to totally “expose” there “weapons” for next year, IMO.
Professional sports insurance usually covers up to 70% of a players salary if they are on the DL (at least in the MBL). Most of the players on the Browns DL are high paid, so go figure.

Mike, it looks to me like your Mangini-hate is really causing you to stretch here.
The rumor that Weis interviewed in Cleveland seems likely enough, but the idea that Mangini would go first strikes me as ridiculous.
Why does that have to be the assumption here?
It seems more likely to me that negotiations to fill high-profile NFL coaching positions work pursuant to something other than the kind of junior-high rules that you suppose would keep Weis from joining Mangini here in Cleveland.
“Like, Belichick totally hates Mangini, and Belichick is way cooler than that stupid fatty, so I, like, totally can’t believe that Weis would sit at Mangini’s lunch table. OMG, I’m like, so not sure what to make of this. So totally intriguing…”
Not only would this create major complications with the creation of a chain of command, as you note…and not only because it seems doubtful that the NFL runs like the seventh grade lunch room; but also ridiculous because Lerner hired Mangini to build for the long term, and that the poor record this season is likely a function of a deliberate but necessary tear-down phase more than anything else.
I understand that long term rebuilding projects don’t tend to help sell papers or drive pageviews, so it’s easy to see how folks can get carried away with rumors.
Good to hear that Weis was in Cleveland, though. He’d really love it here, and we’d love to have him.

The only way I would want Weis is for OC. Mangini would have to like the idea as well. If egos would be checked at the door and these two can work well together, it could prove to be successful. I think Mangini’s approach from building from the ground up is the right approach. Whereas Phil Savage would just go out and pick up high-profile players. Build a foundation and then add talent. I don’t want another HC coming in and tearing everything down all over again. I’ll give Mangini 2 years. This draft is make or break.

Jim Fassle was a horrible college coach (University of Utah) but was a decent NFL coach. Weiss seems to be more suited to the pro game than college.
Don’t write him off yet just because he failed at Notre Dame – it’s turning into a black hole with completely unrealistic expectations.

Charlie Weis………are you joking? Only thing he’s good for is an offensive coordinator. The head coach needs to be someone established who will get a team together. Not this pee wee squad they have in Cleveland now. Cleveland needs to talk to Shanahan, Cowher, Holmgren. Guys like this before they speak to a wanna be head coach

So Charlie Weis thinks he can go from failing with one of college football’s most historic programs to taking the head coach position of an NFL team, overnight? Like he’s entitled to it?
Lerner don’t do this to Cleveland. This is potientially almost as bad as the Mangini hiring.

The national Enquirer of NFL reporting presents another gem. So if Brady Quinn played for Indy I guess Charlie Weis would be going there. How about Tampa where Maurice Stovall plays. Or maybe Denver because of the Daniel Graham connection. Wow this is pretty easy maybe I can have my own website. Oh I know he and Clausen and Tate will go into the draft as a package deal and get drafted by Mike Singletary. The connection is Belichick and Singletary once stood on the same field and said Hi to each other.

ok i’m ok with weis as an OC i guess but
1.) is Lerner SERIOUSLY going to hire Bernie Kosar as the GM???????
why?! the guy was a hero to the Browns but that doesnt make him a GM. you could literally hire a major football fan off the streets and he could do as good as Bernie. keep bernie as an advisor, aka public figure in the building, and leave it at that.
2.) why the hell are we hiring assistants before what could be a new head coach? didnt we JUST get through telling ourselves we really screwed the pooch by hiring a head coach before a GM?
Lerner, PLEASE, for the love of all that is the fan base of the Cleveland Browns, stop abusing us and DO THINGS THE RIGHT WAY!!!!

This article is basically the writer making up a scenario strictly for entertainment purposes. There’s a difference between dot connecting and plain old fabrication.
The inverview with Weis, if it happened, could be straight due diligence on Randy Lerner’s part. Lerner was criticized for hiring Mangini too quickly last winter and now he’s being run down for taking his time and holding lots of discussions?

What is with the fascination with Patriot assistants anyway? None of them has ever done a damn thing on their own except MAYBE McDaniels, the jury’s still out. Furthermore, if anyone should know that, it’s Lerner! Now he wants another one?
I feel sorry for all the loyal Browns fans out there. They deserve much better.

If the Browns hire CW then Al Davis is going to have to compete for that “worst owner in the league” award–a distinction he has had a grip on for some time now.
Anyone OTHER than Shanny or Cower or Holmgren is a botched hire.
