Keith Brooking thinks the media should focus on this year

As the Cowboys start another December with an 0-1 record, there’s plenty of talk about past Dallas failures in the game played after the annual national turkey massacre.

Coach Wade Phillips has been dealing with the question lately, and now linebacker Keith Brooking has gotten in on the act as well.

Per Brooking, there’s no reason to focus on past seasons.  Instead, the only thing that matters is the current campaign.

“We’re not talking about two years ago, we’re not talking about last year,” Brooking said during the taping of The Keith Brooking Show.

Said host Steve Dennis said, “You have to.”

“Bullcrap,” Brooking replied.

“Right now we are what we are.  And there’s two teams in the NFC that are better than us, and our head coach I guess is supposed to . . . sit there in a press conference and call us losers because we went to New York and lost a game.”

Here’s the video.

Our take?  Recent historical performance is relevant, but not conclusive.  It’s there, it can’t be ignored, and the Cowboys should find a way not to obsess over it — and not to allow talk of it to cause a reaction that makes people think that it’s in their heads, Werder.

The best way to make the talk go away is to win football games and, ultimately, a playoff game.  Until then, the Cowboys had better get used to it.

Someone remind Keith Brooking on 3rd and long to cover the tight end.

brooking’s new. he’ll learn…..they won a game or two they shouldn’t have, saw a ray of sunshine, and thought they were in Hawaii. soon the rains will come again to dallas, as they always do………

Considering they play the Chargers and Saints next the talk will continue for 2 more weeks.

I guess it just give people something to talk about when their team is sitting at home already before December even started. If I remember correctly Detroit had a nice little losing record going but funny thing happened, did they win? Now the story changes to Dallas, before it was Romo couldn’t get it done. I agree with Brookings, first he is the leader of the team, and there are a lot of new players on this team, including himself.

  5. WhySoSerious says: Dec 9, 2009 9:42 PM

Of course they better get used to it. Until the media realizes that history doesnt play the game, then its gonna be in their heads. Mostly because they keep getting asked the questions. Really Florio, even youre smart enough to know that this Dallas team doesnt have 5 Super Bowl rings right? But you can say that this Dallas team has bad Decembers, and no playoff wins in 12 years. This particular team has only 1 December loss. And you mentioned recent historical performance, how far back is recent? As far back as the person asking the question wants it to be? The idiotic comments above and below mine are from people reaching for something bad to say, because its in their nature to hate. Idiots do that. Hence, any post you make about Dallas. History doesnt play the game folks. Historically speaking, this team is 0-1 in December.

Currently the Cards would have the Number Three seed if the playoffs were today. So there are three teams in the NFC better than the Cowboys.

    Why so serious?

The Cowboys are the Mets of the NFL. They play good all year long until the last month while the Phillies/Eagles start to heat up when it matters to knock the Mets/Cowboys out of contention.

Don’t the Packers have the tie breaker on the Cowboys since they beat them 3 weeks ago. So there are 4 teams better than the Boys as far as Playoff berths are concerned.

  16. Bigbluefan says: Dec 9, 2009 10:34 PM

Relax its December the Cowgirls Blow get over it your owner sucks your coach sucks your QB sucks and Blowzel well the name says it all

  17. WashingtonRedOookies says: Dec 9, 2009 10:35 PM

The Boyz will be lucky to get to 9-7. Saints & Chargers will beat them for sure, and they probably won’t win both NFC East games.

  18. Phillypete98 says: Dec 9, 2009 10:53 PM

The talk of the Cowboys being December “choke” artists will subside when the ‘boys start to win. A victory this week against the impressive Chargers will quiet their critics for the short term anyway. Of course a loss this week will only escalate the critics.
I’m sure the team realizes that all they have to do is win to shut the “nay sayers” up. But this is all they have had to do for years! Just win, baby!
What I think sometimes goes under-reported is the fact that Dallas has enjoyed one of the most talented teams in the NFL during this drought of playoff wins/appearances. At some point isn’t someone going to have to account for that? During the T.O. years in Dallas most people would acknowledge that the ‘boys were among the most talented if not THE most talented team in the NFL. It didn’t get them anywhere. A pattern has certainly developed down there. But it is not a very attractive one.

“They play good all year long until the last month while the Phillies/Eagles start to heat up when it matters”
Why are you mentioning the Eagirls along with the Phillies? One’s won a recent championship, the other one. has. not. And hasn’t in almost 50 years. “heat up when it matters”? Really? When did THAT happen for the Eagirls?

  21. Favre On HGH says: Dec 9, 2009 11:41 PM

For Jerry Jones being so brilliants you would think he would bribe the schedule makers into giving them cupcake teams for December.
Or maybe he did try and his bribe was too cheap and the schedule maker got offended.
Sun, Dec 6 @ NY Giants
    Sun, Dec 13 San Diego
Sat, Dec 19 @ New Orleans
    Sun, Dec 27 @ Washington
    Sun, Jan 3 Philadelphia
    I’m going with option two.

  22. ChrisKreager says: Dec 9, 2009 11:45 PM

If Dallas beats the Chargers, then I think there will be a boatload of humble pie served on here.
IMHO, there is a spike in comments on this site when the Cowboys lose.

  23. Rickah99 says: Dec 10, 2009 12:09 AM

Dallas better damn well win against San Diego, AT HOME!! I’m just sayin’, someone’s going to win the Eagles/Giants game(o.oooo1% of a tie).
If the Eagles win they will be 9-4 and, at worst, tied with Dallas.
If the Giants win they will be 8-5 and have swept Dallas.
Come on Dallas, IMPRESS ME!!!! Win a CLUTCH game in December.
It’s funny how Dallas Cowboy fan will bash McNabb for not winning in JANUARY, meanwhile their team would relish just ONE BIG win in December.
Here’s your chance Dallas Cowboy fan, put up or shut up! Move on, or move out! ;-)
I would actually pay serious money to witness Vex in her mancave, with the lights turned off on her knees praying to the football Gods that her team wins! LMAO!!!
    Best of luck!
How about a little break down:
    Rom-O-Choke/Rivers: slight edge SD
    L.T. & Sproles/Barber & Jones & Choice: Push
Jackson & Floyd/Austin & Williams: slight edge Dallas
    Gates/Witten: slight edge SD
    D/ST: push
    Coach(lol): edge SD
    Intangibles: push
    Get yer popcorn ready!!

  24. FumbleNuts says: Dec 10, 2009 12:37 AM

C’mon Cowboys, You have Barber, Jones and Choice at the RB position. I could design plays to get these guys TD’s.
Your WR’s each have a unique ability, and you can’t figure out to hit the open man to knock out some serious YDS??
Maybe the Boys’ should have a new set of plays each and every week?
Do the defense’s in the NFL have you figured out?
Then CHANGE the way you do things!

  25. Bob Nelson says: Dec 10, 2009 1:37 AM

So after they lose to the Chargers this week and the Saints next week there will be less talk about a December decline?
How will the Cowboys make the Playoffs if they already lose tiebreakers to the Giants and the Packers?
Will their final game against the Eagles this season mean anything to the Cowboys?

  26. NoKoolaidCowboy says: Dec 10, 2009 6:38 AM

“our head coach I guess is supposed to . . . sit there in a press conference and call us losers because we went to New York and lost a game.”
No, but he is supposed to inspire consistency and drive you toward a championship and he is incapable. We get that Wade Phillips is a nice guy and you guys have a nice camp and nice practices.
Keith, you just haven’t been around long enough. Shut up and play. Coach is a big boy and can defend himself. Prove the doubters wrong by getting into the playoffs and winning. Show some kind of improvement. All you guys do (coach included) when you speak is put yourselves into a deeper hole. Just show us.

  27. JimmySmith says: Dec 10, 2009 7:01 AM

I am amazed the Cowgirls garner this much attention. It’s not like they won anything, or least they haven’t for more than a decade.
But it couldn’t happen to a nicer owner/GM/football talent guru. Jerry Jones might be the only person in America to have more face lifts than Nancy Pelosi.
But I have to admit to being torn, they will likely not make the playoffs and the head coach will surely be fired. Or they can make the playoffs and go one and done and Wade might coach again next year, thereby guaranteeing another year of non success, jeez, which do I choose?

  28. Buckyball says: Dec 10, 2009 9:54 AM

Brooking needs to be careful about what he asks for.
He wants the media to focus on this year? Oh yeah, when the ‘boys lose to the Chargers and then Saints, the media will focus on this year… more than Brooking wants them too I imagine.
The media will be really focused on that game *AT* Washington… the ‘boys will be heading into that game with their playoff lives hanging by a thread… I garauntee that the media will be focused on that game.

  29. Opie says: Dec 10, 2009 10:06 AM

wolverine94 & whysoserious: are you sure that Brooking is the “leader” of this team?
FYI: Brooking has never had back to back winning seasons while in the NFL….. think about that. I think, maybe, you should find a new spokesperson.
Vox: tell the truth, you’re getting a little nervous right now aren’t you?!? I bet if you squeeze a piece of charcoal up your bunghole, you could shit a diamond……. it’s fun to watch people get all tightened up with so many games left to play….

  30. chunky soupy sales says: Dec 10, 2009 10:23 AM

“Someone remind Keith Brooking on 3rd and long to cover the tight end. ”
Someone remind Atlanta fans not to CHEER for and yell that they “want” a certain former player when he scores two cheap TD’s on your team and hammers away at your play-off hopes. You guys don’t get that whole fan thing.

  31. penguininbondage says: Dec 10, 2009 10:38 AM

DAllas could save us all alot of trouble and discussion by just mailing in a few losses in the next two weeks.
That would take them from division leader to out of the wildcard unless thay have a better record than NY or Philly.

  32. Quagmire says: Dec 10, 2009 10:39 AM

“heat up when it matters”? Really? When did THAT happen for the Eagirls?”
23t eams have heated up when it matters, with at least 1 playoff win in the last 10 years:
TEN, WAS, MIN, MIA, TB, JAC, STL, NO, BAL, PHI, OAK , NYG, GB, NE, PIT, NYJ, ATL, SF, CAR, IND, DEN, SD, ARI.
Dallas playoff wins the last 10 years:
    ZERO point ZERO

You’re so amazed the Cowboys get this much attention you had to post in a thread about the Cowboys and admit that you are “torn” over wanting them to keep a coach or not.
That seems to be a lot of attention you seem to be giving them there, hoss.

Brooking rarely plays on 3rd down. Barbie Carpentar misses those tackles.
And when he’s not in, Spencer will let a Mack Truck run down the sideline unnoticed.
    Horrible. I think I’m sad.
BTW – Dallas leads the NFC East, knuckleheads. How your dirty birds smelling so far?

To those wondering why Dallas gets so much attention, I can only assume that you haven’t followed football very long or don’t know much history.
The Cowboys are the Yankees of football: most fans, most haters, most watched, most talked about, most ratings, most money, most merchandise, most playoff wins, most playoff appearances, most Super Bowl appearances, most nationally televised games, and on and on. But for now the Cowboys are in a drought after an unprecedented run of success since their inception in 1960.
Likewise, the Yankees had an 18-year World Series drought that lasted from 1978 to 1996 after winnning multiple titles in every single decade since the 1920s. It happens to championship winning franchises and Dallas is struggling to break out of the slump.

Not really. It’s always better to be a “has been” than a ” never was”.

  40. Nebster21 says: Dec 10, 2009 12:58 PM

So what does Brooking want us to stop talking about? How the cowboys have NEVER won a playoff game since he has been in the league or the fact that there are teenages out there that have NEVER seen the cowboys win a playoff game?
