Matt Ryan's availability may depend on his teammates

Matt Ryan participated in Atlanta’s walk through on Wednesday morning to test his injured toe, but his status for Sunday’s against New Orleans is shrouded in mystery.

The team’s staff wants to see how Ryan reacts to the increased workload.

“We want to test the waters,” coach Mike Smith said.  “Hopefully there won’t be a lot of residual and we’ll see where he’s at tomorrow.”

Ryan was originally considered something of a long shot to return so quickly.  NFL Network’s Steve Wyche says that Ryan’s availability Sunday may also depend on his teammates.  Starting right guard Harvey Dahl and left tackle Sam Baker are both uncertain to suit up.

“The ability of Dahl and Baker to perform at an acceptable level will play into the decision as to whether Ryan will suit up,” Wyche writes.

It sounds like Ryan will do everything possible to play, but toe injuries often knock a player out for much longer than one game.  Michael Turner may also miss the game with an ankle injury.

The Falcons need to beat New Orleans to maintain any realistic hopes for the playoffs.  In other words, they are in trouble whether Ryan plays or not.

Chris Redman played really well for them in relief last week, and this week he’ll be getting practice reps – so they ought to give Ryan a chance to heal up. They don’t have much of a prayer against New Orleans anyway, so why not try to put a healthier Ryan back on the field next week?

Agree with what ladybucs&steelersnut hazta say except for the “Chris Redman played really well for them in relief last week” part. 23/44 passing with one TD and 2 INT’s. Plus a poor running game against the Iggles. The Falcons had 4 chances to run it in near halftime, 3 of those times needing only 2 or less yards, but the Eagles D made the goal line stand and stuffed Jason Snelling more than a taxidermist on April 15. Keep the same crew as last week to see if they can redeem themselves after such a horrid performance. If things get ugly early it’s DVD time.

Only hope for the season is to try and end with a winning record. Would be the first time in Falcons history that they actually had back to back winning seasons.
Can’t say it is something I am rooting for though.

Actually pretty interesting fact about the Falcons and never having had back to back winning seasons. Some Falcons fan invaded some of the Saints message boards and were beaten back by telling them that the never having had back to back winning season streak not coming to an end. They were incredulous and basically sulked off when told that the Dirty Birds would not have a winning season.
My question is, would the streak be considered over if the Falcons went 8-8? I think not.
Sorry to see the Falcons fans cheering for Vick, kinda sad really. But I do hope it helps destroy the franchise. I really do hate the Falcons.

I think that Matt Ryan could have suited up last Sunday- but because all of the pieces weren’t in place, he was left off. And Chris Redman was fed to the wolves.
I think it was a calculated plan to keep Matt Ryan within a positive light. Think about it- imagine if he played last Sunday. With a bad wheel and without his playmakers and protection. What would have happened was that he would have looked terrible, possibly re-injured himself, and would have been shown up by Mike Vick going head-to-head.
Yes, he has a sprain, but if all the other pieces were have been in place, I believe that Matt Ryan would have played last Sunday.

Take the Michael Vick jersey off & put it in the closet, tian.

Ryan has played so scared this he will probably be saying he has a concussion in his big toe to keep from playing.
But since the Falcons fans were screaming ” we want Mike Vick”, I say give him to them. That’s why no one respects them or takes them seriously as a fanbase to begin with. Keep keepsing it realz, retards.

No, because even though it’s not a losing season, 8-8 is not a winning season either. Besides, they have done that before, following an 11-5 season with a 8-8 in 2004 and 2005.
    They want Vick! :D

I don’t have a Mike Vick jersey, SaintsBucsPanthersSUKK. But I also don’t have a Matt Ryan jersey either.
The funny thing is that given two years in the league for Ryan vs. 2 years in the league for Vick- their numbers are eerily the same. Look it up. Someone wrote a whole article on it in the AJC.
If you ask me what I want at QB for the Falcons- it’s simple: a QB that can manage a game and not make critical mistakes. That’s not Michael Vick. That’s not Matty Ice, either.
