No fines for Ravens, Mason calls refs "ridiculous"

The Baltimore Ravens weren’t happy with the officiating in their loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday night, with wide receiver Derrick Mason and the brother of head coach John Harbaugh both screaming at officials during the game.

But apparently no one associated with the Ravens will be fined for their actions.

A spokesman for the league told the Baltimore Sun, “there is no basis for disciplinary action in either case.”

But maybe Mason is going to keep talking about the officials until he does get fined. Two days after he drew an unsportsmanlike conduct flag for yelling at an official about an offensive pass interference call, Mason is still unhappy, believing that he gets flagged for interfering with opposing defensive backs but they don’t get flagged for interfering with him.

“It’s getting ridiculous with the non-calls,” Mason said. “I can see if it happens once or twice. But it seems like with us, it happens every time and we never seem to get the call.”

Actually, the Ravens got plenty of calls on Monday night: The Packers were penalized 11 times. But the Ravens were penalized 12 times, and Mason is still upset about it.

I guess he missed the makeup call on Tramon Williams in the end zone

that game was a joke i dont like either team and i have never seen so many pass interference calls in my life. what a joke. i would complain too.

That whiner is complaining about non calls in the 2nd most penalized game in NFL history!!
The guys isn’t a very good receiver and he was going against the #1 defense in the NFL. That is the reason he performed poorly.
More sour grapes from the Ravens whining about a loss.

  4. GBP says: Dec 9, 2009 6:08 PM

I’m a packer fan and I agree with mason that the officiating was ridiculous. I think the players should be allowed to just play the game. However, the bad calls went both ways in that game. I don’t think it helped or hurt one team more than the other, except GB got 40 mire penalty yards than bmore.

    Its a joke….
The refs do this to the Ravens every week, because of the supposed ‘bad boy’ defensive image of the team. Just because the Ravens play old school physical football, the refs are on high alert to make calls against them….
NFL is turning into the league of pussies.

  9. footballisfun says: Dec 9, 2009 6:15 PM

If nothing else the Ravens are consistent. They have probably complained over officiating after every loss this season.
    Bad teams make excuses.
If refs are calling a tight game, adjust. It wasn’t one sided, it was a tight game. I can’t believe I’m going to make a baseball reference on this site, but here goes. In baseball, umps call the strike zone differently, its the job of the pitcher to adjust. Same thing in football with like holding and interference calls. Refs can call those a lot more/a lot less depending on their interpretation of the rules. As a team its your job to figure it out.

@ihaveanoutkast How about the 2 or 3 calls Tramon DIDN’T get called for including an identical play that he was called for PI on before. Identical arm bar.. so not just as a Ravens fan but Officiating around the league is horrible this year.

  11. iceiam says: Dec 9, 2009 6:28 PM

  12. everythingchicagoblows says: Dec 9, 2009 6:32 PM

  13. crohrbaugh says: Dec 9, 2009 6:37 PM

One of the most consistant and predictable things in the NFL is that whenever the Ravens lose they blame the refs. Part of the problem is that they got away with plenty of defensive penalties when they were an elite defense, and now things are finally getting called. The Packers are penalized 11 times (!) and Mason is pissed about non calls? Same shit all the time with the Ravens.

  14. Bill Cowher's Chin says: Dec 9, 2009 6:38 PM

The Ravens, have a history of always having something negative to the officials after games that they lose. Sometimes justified, I’m not criticizing. But, do any of the Ravens players, think, that just maybe, they are getting bad calls because they area bunch of whining pussies, and the officials arent inclined to go out of their way to make the Ravens happy…..?

  15. bloodystupidjohnson says: Dec 9, 2009 6:40 PM

I love it! The ratbirds complaining about the lack of calls. Of course, the league would probably fine any other team for bitching about the officals. But the ratbirds are the ratbirds.

  16. HarrisonHits says: Dec 9, 2009 6:40 PM

Is there ever a game that the Ravens don’t whine about the refs ? No. Even the ones they win the cry all week long. They have become the league leaders in tears shed per penalty.
Every single Raven press conference can be categorized by one word …. WWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  17. stone says: Dec 9, 2009 6:42 PM

Of course the officials will throw flags! Just not against the Colts Patriots and Steelers

  18. Love_Boat_Scandal says: Dec 9, 2009 6:43 PM

That was offensive pass interference. Woodson had perfect position, Mason grabbed him with two hands and pulled him behind him. The refs called a tight game, but called it tight both ways. As a team, you have to adjust for that or just deal with it. One team did, and one team did not.
The only legit claim the Ravens might have was with resetting the play clock with just over 2 minutes left in the game. Although it wasn’t confirmed, that appears to be what happened.
Jim Harbaugh needs to keep his butt off the field during games, lest a Packer defender confuse him for Jim McMahon and pull a Charles Martin on him.
The Cowboys and Ravens were both big whiners after their losses to the Packers. Win or shut up.

  19. Choirdrunk says: Dec 9, 2009 6:45 PM

This all started with the Patriots game and the ridiculous calls that went on and the post-game uproar from the Ravens. Afterward, I wondered if league officials would get the type of vengeance Donaghy writes goes on in the NBA all the time. It seems like that is happening.
I’ll put my cards on the table. I’m a Ravens fan, second, football fan first. Maybe I’m looking at the world through purple colored glasses, but some of the calls (the Pats game, the Packers game — though we legitimately lost the Packers game) are remarkable. In my lifetime of being a Ravens fan, I have never genuinely questioned a league bias (against the Ravens) until this year (the league bias for the Colts in the Pitt/Colts playoff game a few years back was pretty hideous. Yep, Ravens fan talking about how the Steelers almost got jobbed).
I always thought the NFL had a stronger referring core than the NBA or NHL. I still do but I’m finding it difficult to explain what is going on. Was there some internal consulting memo that determined the “star” system so prevelant in the NBA would maximize NFL revenues and that “key” players (read: Quarterbacks) need to be protected? We’re a physical team, but we’re not dirty. It’s come to the point where I dislike watching Ravens games because I know the calls are going to piss me off.

  20. rjgreen3 says: Dec 9, 2009 6:46 PM

    Hey Florio,
It does seem that the league has had it out for this team since Modell moved them to Baltimore. Even when they have had losing seasons they have had harder than most schedules the following year. An lot of calls go against them. I can see why Ravens fans think that there is a NFL conspiracy against them.
What is the ratio of calls for the Ravens as opposed to the ones against the Ravens?
Let’s see if there is a legitimate gripe here!!!

  21. Nick says: Dec 9, 2009 6:59 PM

Williams didn’t get called when he mugged Clayton, but did get called on his other 2 muggings. He clearly taught Frank Walker how to do the same, as they both PI like crazy and they use the same technique.
The problem Monday was they called some things they shouldn’t have, and didn’t call others they should have. Consistency is key in officiating and I haven’t seen that in any game or for any team this year.

No. They have played press coverage in the past and used the 5 yard rule to press the receivers. That’s legal and makes it look like they are more aggressive to the average fan like yourself. In fact, they’ve gotten flagged even after 4 yards just because the receiver lined up a year off the line of scrimmage which is a joke. Kind of like most Cowboys fans…

  24. electricron says: Dec 9, 2009 7:24 PM

That Offensive PI call on Mason was a complete joke. I don’t care how many penalties they called on the Packers.
The Ravens complain about the officiating because they constantly get screwed by the officials.
These part-time referees are only human. There’s ZERO accountability for their judgement calls. And it only makes financial sense for the really popular NFL teams to win all the time. The Patriots are a perfect example.
Who makes money off teams with a large following be the winning teams? THE NFL does. And they employ officials part-time so that they don’t have the time or incentive to be critical of their own work. Look up the most popular teams, and you’ll see exactly who gets all the calls.

  25. rize says: Dec 9, 2009 7:44 PM

Starts with the coach. If the coach is gonna take his headset off, scream his head off, get in the ear of the official, cry, etc. Guess what, his team will also. Creates an unrealistic excuse for not winning.
See it at every level of sports.

  26. cheddar is beddar says: Dec 9, 2009 7:45 PM

A Raven crying about the officials, seems fitting.
Mason – you’re an average WR going up against an elite CB, you’ll be called every time for that grab of Woodson, or any other elite CB for that matter. That’s just how it goes, and vice versa for elite WR’s, which you are not.
The only ridiculous part of the officiating on Monday was the number of calls against both teams. Each was handed some very questionable PI calls that another crew might deem just physical football.
First it’s Rice talking shit on GB, now it’s Mason talking shit on the officiating. Their play on the field is pretty uninspiring at this point of the season, and their choice of what they want to chat about is backing that up.

  27. AJC says: Dec 9, 2009 7:50 PM

The entire GB secondary is as filthy as bob nelson’s mothers’ basement, because he refuses to clean it up. They cheapshot, hold, interfere, and just all around play as dirty as possible. There is no excuse for the crap they pull and none should be allowed to play the game because they honestly work to ruin it.
Having said that, this WR from baltimore should STFU. man up or shut up. if they are playing dirty, hit’em back and hit them harder. I hate the packers nearly as much as i hate their fans, but calls usually even out in the end, Mason needs to quit his bitching, and just get a good shot on woodson if he gets the chance again. WR’s are usually quite a bit bigger and more physical than DB’s, so pull a ward and block the hell out of him, nothing wrong with that.

Where is your proof, moron? Oh yeah, you’ve got none. Now go run off and watch that lousy piece of trash you call the Vikings.
and oh by the way, you think your Viking players are the perfect angels, don’t ya? Well here is something you don’t know….the Vikings get away with everything just as much as you say the Packers get away with everything. My proof? look at the Packer vs. Viking game in Minnesota. The refs were having a party throwing flags against the Packers while they kept the flags in their pockets if the Vikings did something wrong. The proof lies within the numbers which was 11 penalties for the Packers and something like only 2 for the Vikings including none in the first half. I also remember seeing that Jared Allen INT against the Bears and it clearly looked like pass interference but was it called? Nope. Why? because it’s the Vikings. What do you expect? and oh yeah Lord Favre is on the team and they don’t want to see the fairweather Viking fans cry into their braids.

You just made that up didn’t you. I’m a Packer fan and I can let a lot go, but this is just B.S.
Care to show me your examples of this DIRTY play by the Packer Secondary? Like late hits on the QB (a la Jared Allen), or leg whips, Tripping, pushing (Flozell Adams), horse collars (Roy Williams), chop blocks, crack back blocks, or going low on guys at their knees!?? (Brett Farve aka The Traitor King) I’ve watched all the Packer games and seen none of those except some accidental facemasks that I didn’t think were vicious. As far as I know, there have been 0 fines levied on the Pack for dirty hits.
Sooo you think the Packer Secondary is sitting in their team meetings thinking “How can we destroy the game of football!? We must surpass Flozell Adams in dirtiness this year or we have failed in our mission!” Um….yeeeaaaaaaah.
Maybe you don’t realize it, but you can bump, push, shove, the receiver within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Man, learn the game of football before you post. Our Secondary is aggressive.

More sour grapes from the Ravens whining about a loss.
UMM That is greenbay’s MO the corners mug the receivers continually and they will keep doing it until the refs give up calling penalties. Been going on for years.

  39. Tompadre says: Dec 10, 2009 6:24 AM

A ref can’t just stop calling a certain penalty in a game just because it’s been called a lot already. That would give the players the freedom to commit the penalty at will knowing the refs won’t likely call it.
As much as their fans want to claim it’s just physical play, and sometimes it is, the GB DBs have been arm-barring for years. They must teach it and practice it because quite honestly, they are extremely good at it. Watch a Packers game from the last several years and you’ll see numerous times where the receiver gets only one arm up for the pass because the other is being pinned/grabbed by the GB DB. Watch over the next several games, I’m sure it will be happening again.
There wasn’t a penalty called against Williams that he didn’t earn and several he got away with. However, both teams were sloppy and if the Ravens expect to win they should try playing better, like not throwing stupid INT in the endzone.

  40. HamBurghlar says: Dec 10, 2009 9:05 AM

Looks like the ratbirds took a page out of Seattle’s book, “oh no, we didn’t get any help from the refs to win the game”. If your team wasn’t breaking the rules (on AND off the field) and they played to win, you’d have nothing to biatch about. Bunch of classless thugs, murderers and wifebeaters.

  41. guitarkevin says: Dec 10, 2009 3:38 PM

I love how some fans out there try to stereotype a team. I think all that hate is jealousy.
Look, the Officiating around the league has been piss poor all year.
And in this case Mason is trying to make a point that if you’re going to call a penalty on one team for doing something. Make sure you get the call on the other team when they do it. Sure this game had a lot of flags, but there were some BIG no-flags in key situations.
Officiating needs to be consistent on both sides of the ball, that’s all.
And I won’t try to defend all the PI calls on the Ravens, they were the right calls.
