Belichick calls Peppers "one of the best players in the league"

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick spent a great deal of time in his conference call with the Carolina media discussing Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers. And Belichick was effusive with his praise.

“He’s a great player, I mean, he’s one of the best players in the league,” Belichick said. “I have no problems saying that. . . . Julius Peppers is outstanding.”

But while Belichick says he thinks Peppers is great, he also says he knows nothing about off-season speculation that the Patriots might have been trying to acquire Peppers.

“I’m not sure exactly what you’re talking about,” Belichick said when a reporter asked him about that speculation. “We didn’t talk to Julius, and we couldn’t talk to Carolina because he wasn’t signed. I’m not really sure what you’re referring to.”

So Belichick thinks highly of Peppers, but he says he’s never had substantive talks about Peppers — except talking about how to block him, which the Patriots will have to do on Sunday.

That is classic Belichick. He is just lobbying for Peppers now for next year. Notice he didnt say he wanted him on his team, just that he is OUTSTANDING and one of the BEST PLAYERS IN THE LEAGUE!!! HAHA!!! Classic.
Guess Peppers will be a Patriot next year.
    End of Line.

    “Julius”
Julius? Not “Peppers”… not “that player” … Julius.

He’s right that Peppers is great.
The Pats have been after him for a couple of years, he’s full of it when he says there have been no talks. It doesnt matter, everyone knows Beli-CHEAT is a liar

We should have gotten a first round pick for him while we had the chance.

    OH MY GOD!!!!
Belichick is praising a member of the opposing team!!! That never happens!!
This totally deserves it’s own headline on what is fast becoming the National Enquirer of the NFL…PFT!

  8. Montsta says: Dec 10, 2009 10:59 AM

Carolina shoulda offed him to NE last year when they coulda got some compensation for him. Now he’ll be a Pat for free, and the Pats will win the SB.

Peppers is SOOO overrated. He has the talent but he’s not the most consistent player. He’s not even worth the franchise tag.

Any chance that New England traded Seymour, who wasnt going to be back next year anyway, for a first round pick from Oakland, so that they could package that pick to Carolina for Peppers????
And for the folks that, over the last few weeks, have been pretending that New England got bent over by the Raiders in the Seymour trade, you are crazy. Belichick new it was going to hurt New England this year, and it was going to help the Raiders this year. But, a team like the Raiders, that is a long way from elite, traded a first round pick, for a 16 game rental!!! Seymour will be playing in Cleveland, Miami, or in New York (Jets) next year. I can see giving up a first round pick for a one season rental on a guy that will put you over the top and put you into position to win a Super Bowl, but paying the price of a first round pick, for a guy that will take you from 3 wins, to 5 wins, seems a little stupid to me, regardless of how badly New England needed him this year….

First of all, you don’t KNOW that he’s “a rental player”, you just don’t.
Secondly, We all know how good Seymour is, but we DON’T know how good a 1st round pick will be. This is proven true every year in the NFL.
Lastly, What he’s brought to the Raiders is in terms of leadership and helping others is immeasurable, even IF he’s not resigned.

Yeah. like Favre to MN. GB should have just traded him to MN last year and at least they could have gotten some great compensation. But nooooo, ship him off to the Jets last year and then MN gets him for nothing. NOTHING
    (well except his salary)
One of the most classically stupid football moves ever.

  20. goJags says: Dec 10, 2009 11:47 AM

Thats a typical Belichick. He always portrays that the team he is facing next week has the best players. That way it motivates his team. In the case of Peppers, the matchup gives BB an opportunity to tell Peppers that don’t worry I will take you next season in the Pats uniform. Make yourself available.
BB is a great coach, great motivator everything great.
    ….
    ….
Did I say he is a great cheat as well?

  21. Topher says: Dec 10, 2009 11:49 AM

And now it comes to pass that we understand why BB tossed out Julius as his 2 inches of news.
4 players were sent home for missing a meeting. Patriots fans will say no big deal, but Belichick, obviously, would prefer that the news talk about Peppers and not Moss.

  22. danlinker says: Dec 10, 2009 11:57 AM

I hope Peppers does go there. I LOVE when a player goes somewhere where he is JUST SURE he will get a ring. And then he doesn’t. And, he won’t. Bank on it. Pats are on the downhill slide.

What’s the story in this? Coaches always praise one of the other team’s players during their weekly press conference, often times saying X is one of the best players in the league.
The writing on this site is getting crappier by the day.

You’re wrong. Peppers might be a Patriot next year but this is just the way Belichick talks about players. It’s nothing special.

  27. Bill Cowher's Chin says: Dec 10, 2009 12:56 PM

Hap, you are missing the point of most of the readers that are responding to you. Everyone knows what happened to Belichick and taping signals, etc. Everyone knows that. Pats fans know that, Pats haters know that. It is known.
Most of the people in here want to talk football. Have a discussion, p[resent opinions about players and games, make predictions, etc. But you come in here, and you say the same lame things:
    Cheatriots, Jellyprick, etc.
We get it, you hate the Pats, no one has forgotten anything, but most people have moved on. If you cant move on from it, then you are one that has a problem, not the people tired of your lame jokes. Everyone comes in here and says, “Vick served his time, let him play”, but when it comes to the Pats, or Belichick, serving his penalty (regardless of whether you think it was too leniant, etc) isnt good enough……

LMFAO, obviously no one KNOWS (caps make it more important, right?) what Seymour is going to do, but seriously, do you think he is going to sign a contract with Oakland next year? REALLY?!?!?!? DO YOU? (caps makes it more important, right?).
Since you missed my over all, see footballrulz’s post, he got the point, I will recap. Trading a first round pick, and NOT making a contingency that Seymour signs a new deal with you, IS STUPID. It looks good now, because Seymour is helping them out, so that they are only the 4th worst team in football, LMFAO. If he resins with them, it was still too much to pay for a player that is in decline, but atleast they have something to show for it.
Plus, as Belichick has done in the past, if he sees a player in the first round that is a sure thing, he will draft that player (Mayo, Wilfork, Seymour), if not, he trades the pick for many more picks….. But the value of a first round pick is more important than the value of an aging veteran…..

I have to disagree. Over half the posts are garbage rants from loser fans(?) with homosexual overtones. Eagrls, Cowgirls, FudgePackers, Tony Homo, Jay Cuntler, the list goes on it is all as original as BeliCheat. Perhaps an age verification system so only 16+ can post is what’s needed, we could eliminate the Internet personas like millionaire ex-fighters, etc.

Sadly, I don’t think even that would make a dent.
The problem are the mouthbreathing white trash degenerates who know little-to-nothing about football, and who would rather treat this site as a TMZ dumping ground for their passive- aggressive, mental illness fueled ramblings.
    See JustBornFlorio, for example.

I know what you can do to make the site better. On every post their should be a little meter to the side called the BS meter and every member of pft can vote if they think the player/coach/owner etc. is full of it or not. Kind of like they have on NFL.com
This one I would vote Complete BS (thats the highest BS you can vote on the meter). Belchick has lost his mind more then I thought he has if he thinks that we believe what hes saying. No one believes he didnt know their were rumors about Peppers to the Patriots this year.
