Dominique Barber makes his mark in Houston

Marion Barber isn’t the only member of the family playing pro football for a team headquartered in Texas.  His younger brother, Dominique, joined the Texans in 2008 via the sixth-round of the draft.

Now, 12 games into his second season, Barber has been named the team’s starting free safety.

“He had an excellent half [in] the second half of the Jacksonville game,” coach Gary Kubiak said Thursday.  “He’s healthy, his ankle’s good, it’s time for him to go.”

“It feels good,” Barber said.  “It’s been a long process. I just go back to what my dad always tells me, ‘Don’t be surprised.  Be ready.’  I just have to go out there and compete.”

Barber started two games at free safety earlier in the year.  Others who have started games at the position this season including Eugene Wilson, Nick Ferguson, and John Busing.

Both of the Barbers played college football at Minnesota.

I played against him in high school hockey a few years back. He played for Wayzata, the same school which James Laurinaitis played football and hockey at. Imagine those two on skates. Dom nearly knocked me out, great memories…

Putting this in perspective, if Eugene Wilson hadn’t broken his toes (ouch) and get put on IR, Dom Barber is still a backup.
Barber was benched earlier in the year for poor play (at Tennessee during Week 2 in particular).
I hope he takes advantage of the opportunity because up to now, he hasn’t been able to win the job on merit.

    Dom played Hockey?
I knew he was good at Basketball and Football.
I didn’t know he was on the Hockey team, too.
    I don’t think anyone questions Dom’s talent.
It’s his durability. He was always injured. Maroney has the same problem.
