Irish get their new coach

The folks at Notre Dame have hired a new coach, with no ties to the National Football League.

And that was the closest we could come to conjuring a connection between this story and pro football.

But given that the last coach of the Irish came from the NFL and will be returning there no later than 2010, there’s enough of an overlap to justify dropping a link.

So here it is.

The new coach, by the way, is Brian Kelly, who has led the Cincinnati Bearcats to two straight BCS bowls and, in 2009, a 12-0 regular season.  Last year, it was rumored that Notre Dame would have swapped out Kelly for Charlie Weis, if Kelly would have taken the job.

This year, the Irish decided to dump Weis without having a replacement lined up, and Kelly decided to make the leap to South Bend.

If we’re going to be wasting time talking about has-been college athletic programs, why don’t you post an article about Indiana basketball as well?
