Raiders' Gallery done for season

Oakland Raiders left guard Robert Gallery needs back surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

Raiders coach Tom Cable announced after today’s practice that Gallery is done for the year.

Originally acquired as the second overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft, Gallery was expected to be the Raiders’ starting left tackle for years to come, but he struggled against speedy NFL pass rushers. At guard, however, Gallery blossomed into the Raiders’ best offensive lineman, starting all 32 games in 2007 and 2008.

This year he has played just six games, and injuries have limited his effectiveness even when he could play. He missed part of training camp because of an appendectomy and then broke his leg in Week Two, and now the back injury has given his season a painful ending.

Chris Morris is slated to replace Gallery at left guard, although the Raiders may need to do some juggling on their offensive line because starting center Samson Satele is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Redskins, and Morris is Satele’s backup, too.

Thats an expensive guard, even more pricey when he’s on the sidelines.

Everyone likes to crack on the guy because he didn’t fit at tackle, but he’s a quality guard, and by far the best player on a suspect line.

When was he not done for the season?
Is this guy still in the League?

Gallery never got a fair shake at tackle. He shouldve been given a longer look. Also, they shouldve tried him out at RT before moving him to G full time.
Just another player that the Raiders have screwed up.

Actually GoBears, he isn’t that expensive.. he redid his contract to stay in Oaktown.. you know that place where NO ONE WANTS to play? And for FireJJ…. he’s still in the league because he has turned into a very high quality guard.. would probably be a probowler if on a better team… and definitely would have been this year but for the injuries… just because a player plays for a team you don’t pay attention to, doesn’t mean they are what the media claims they are… did the Raiders draft him to be a Left Tackle? Yes. Did he fail in that regard? Yes. But has he become a productive and important NFL player? Yes. Watch a few games outside of those housed in the “mecca” before you make a stupid statement.

This sucks, big time! We are not deep at Guard/Center..
Cable has said that Langston Walker will start in place of Gallery at left guard.
Just as Phat Albert comes to down, not only our best interior OL, but our best OL overall goes down.. If Satele is out as well we’re screwed..
Gradkowski can beat ‘em, but he needs a little time :)

    Hey FireJerryJones,
I know its hard because its the Raiders, but if you’re a true NFL fan, you know who does most of the work for teams, the big uglies on the o-line.
Gallery may have stumbled at LT, but he’s a great guard. The Raiders made a mistake drafting the kid out of Iowa because he came from a zone blocking style while there. Then, he goes to Oakland and has a revolving door of coaches. He went from the power-man-to-man style to finally back to the zone blocking scheme by Cable.
I believe Gallery hurt is back trying to carry JaMarcus Russell while celebrating Oakland scored the 1st of 3 TDs in the fourth quarter against Pittsburgh.

I just spoke with Peter King and he thinks gallery is going to serve up a combo platter of a great year, maybe the best of his professional career and put up some lofty, lofty numbers, with chunks of pancakes.

they might want to hang onto this guy and sign him to an extension. he looks like he could be good. imagine if he left via free agency and turned into a monster just like charles woodson did. nnamdi and woodson would give me nightmares everynight if i was afc west coach.
raiders are better off without satele. hes the schmoe the dolphins got with the second rounder they received for wes welker from new england. he was terrible. miami traded him to oak for a 6th rounder. so basically miami gave their divison foe wes welker for a 6th rounder. geez

From the comments it just goes to show how little most of the public really knows regarding a good player from a bad.
Gallery may not have worked out at LT for the Raiders but the year drafted he was a “cannot miss prospect at LT” by most every NFL team. He has become not just a good guard but plays at Pro Bowl level at guard when healthy. M Henderson at LT the Raiders third round pick is becoming a very good LT as well.
So to the clown with the comment “is he still in the league” yes clown he still is in the league.

Al Davis is a crazed retard.

Gallery suffered from a revolving door of coaches. Maybe he could be a solid LT, but he’s a very good guard. I feel bad for Raider fans that he’s gone for the year. As an Iowa fan (one of three) I hope he recovers quickly and gets back on the field soon.

Charles Woodson was a monster in Oakland also. He was one of if not the only real shutdown corner in the league (Chump isn’t and never was). Go look at the big name receivers when they faced Woodson when he was a Raider.

  14. Rex Ryan=Fat Twat says: Dec 10, 2009 10:17 PM

ok well then letting the only real shutdown corner in the league leave via free agency could be the dumbest move out the 17 the raiders have made in the past 5 years

    @ Swervin
They did try him at RT, and he is not screwed up.
Dude is a good Raider and a great guy. Bad news for our o-line, he was the strongest link.
    Thanks for the hate losers.
    Tell ‘em Invaduh

“Is he still in the league?”
Who ties your shoe laces in the morning for you?
You just embarrassed the shit out of yourself on the World Wide Web in a forum full of knowledgeable football fans.
Go to bed now… and scratch your pubic hair while you wonder what went wrong with your life.
    Moron.

uhm, he did play RT, everything except center i thought. I’m not cracking on the guy at all, just simply pointing out hes a damn rich left guard.

Love to know how he hurt the back. His final play was the ridiculous throwback from Gradkowski to McFadden that Harrison blew up. Interesting to see if he was doing something unnatural on that play.
Obviously Gallery has not panned out as hoped and Fitzgerald or the QB’s (w/Norv as coach) would have been better, but taking the best tackle and the best center was the same strategy the Jets used a year or two later and it has worked for them. Give Gallery credit for continuing to work and not let himself be a bust. He is a very good guard and almost completely eliminated the penalties in 07-08. He also is raising money for one of the Oakland cops that was murdered this year and who worked Raiders games.

Lament for our fallen warrior. His Commitment to Excellence will be missed. But the Will to Win will ensure that his replacement will continue to display the Pride and Poise of a Raider.
