Sorgi's injury might have happened away from football

We're still confounded by the fact that a guy who never plays -- and who wears a red jersey in practice -- somehow landed on injured reserve.

According to Eric Hartz of ColtPower.com (part of FOX's Scout.com project), there are "some unconfirmed whispers that it's possibly a non-football injury."

We don't know whether it is or isn't an injury that Sorgi sustained while (not) playing football or while practicing with (no) contact, the reality is that the backup to the guy who starts every game and takes nearly every snap has somehow landed on injured reserve.

And we still can't imagine the Colts entering the looming postseason preseason with Curtis Painter as the guy who enters the game after Peyton Manning makes a cameo appearance to preserve his string of consecutive starts.

J.P. Losman recently worked out for the Colts, and he'd be a good candidate to take the reins of the offense once Manning is given a couple of games off, at more than $820,000 per week.

When you are the backup QB, you can't get injured, period. You are only there IN CASE the starting QB gets injured himself. If you can't stay healthy when you aren't even starting, then what's the point of keeping you around?

And if it's a non-football injury, goodbye Colts' career. All he has had to do is stay healthy and ready to play, that's all.

And more importantly, I would get to boo him loudly on January 3.

If JP is a good candidate then why haven't they signed him? How else will he learn the offense?

Non-issue on a non-story. In preaseason last yr, this guy couldn't throw it in the ocean, as I remember. Colts woulda been done-done IF.

Painter can play. Sure he overthrows or underthrows a little, but the Colts are really losing anything with Sorgi out.

I'm looking forward to Painter beating the Jets and the Bills...

It is being suggested by some media close to the Colts that the offense may continue on pretty normally the rest of the season whether the Colts clinch home field advantage or not. It will be a few defensive players that will receive the majority of "rest" in the weeks preceding the playoffs. Players like Freeney and Mathis can get fully healthy and have the burst they need to rush the passer.

So, don't count out seeing Peyton Manning taking the majority of snaps the rest of the way, even if the ratio of run/pass increases significantly.

His injury must have occured falling out of bed... or on the practice field this week.

I guarantee you that within the next 12 hours someone at ESPN will ask if Sorgi is the "greatest backup QB of all time."

Really if Peyton goes down it doesn't matter if the backup is Sorgi or Painter. I mean, come on...

And why wouldn't the Colts use Painter? If they take Peyton out of the game they're not trying to win it anymore (or have the game out of reach)... so why not give a rookie some reps.

I think he got his injury in a barroom brawl with the Maytag Man over who had the biggest do-nothing job in the US.

dapack, QBs wear red jerseys in practice. No contact, no one touches them. No, no QB should be injured in practice. If they do, what difference does it make?

You have to stay ready to play when you're the backup QB. If you get injured, it might be no one's fault or your fault; either way, you aren't there when your only requirement is to be ready to play when your (ironman) QB goes down himself. If you aren't there in case he does, then you have no value. Maybe that isn't your fault, but still you aren't doing your job.

    Wow.

It is kind of sad when you fail to be able to comprehend the fact that a QUARTERFREAKINBACK can injure a shoulder without contact.

Who cares who the backup QB for the Colts is? If something happens to Peyton, they are totally hosed.

Addai played QB in high school...just have him as a backup.

I want to see Losman there. That way he can become the first QB in history to win championships in two professional leagues in the same season.

You know how insignificant the backup qb for the Colts is? Florio can write an article about him and never mention his first name, that's how insignificant the backup qb for the Colts is.

Unless he changed to one of those one-name guys, like Nene, or Pele, or Madonna.

Now introducing the backup qb for the Colts..."SORGI".

Did you guys not watch the Pats last year? If Peyton goes down, it's only the end for the Colts if they fail to adjust their offense and Painter is totally inept. Painter was a pretty good QB in college and would be surrounded by talented receivers and a good o-line. I don't think he would perform badly.

Of course, since the Colts are even worse than the Pats at running the ball, they might very well be doomed if they lose Peyton. But that's their fault.

We've never seen how the Colts perform without Peyton, but I think it would be interesting. You don't get to 12-0 just because you have one great player.

  27. CKL says: December 10, 2009 12:43 PM

I thought Painter looked better in preseason than I ever saw Sorgi look. Maybe it won't be a big dropoff backup wise.

Some of these comments show why Manning is the NFL MVP.

Without him the Colts go 2-14 or 3-13 at best and that might be a gift.

With Brunell, the Saints are easy a 10 win team. With T-jack, or Sage, the Vikings are still a 10 win team and both would be division champs.

Without Peyton Manning, the Colts blow.
