Chargers-Cowboys game to be shown in 3D, at Chargers-Cowboys game

OK, now this is getting ridiculous.

As if the oversized drive-in theater screens at the new Cowboys Stadium weren’t already enoughof  a distraction from the fact that, you know, a football game is being played under them, Sunday’s critical contest against the Chargers will feature an added element to keep people from actually focusing on the field.

Given the way the Cowboys recently have performed in December, maybe that’s not a bad thing.

According to Broadcasting & Cable, the game will include a massive experiment in 3D technology, with red-and-blue glasses (Jerry Jones likely asked for a way to make them silver and blue) distributed to all of the 80,000-plus fans in attendance.

So starting at halftime and continuing into the second half, 3D images will be pumped through the large screens via a new technology that allows two-dimensional HD images to be converted to 3D HD.

This development is very bad news for David Modell’s 3ality Digital, which broadcast last December’s Raiders-Chargers game in 3D at a small handful of theaters and produced U2 3D, a 2008 concert film that was, in all candor and objectivity, incredible.

Modell’s company requires 3D cameras; the new technology from HDLogix uses software to translate 2D into 3D, a much cheaper way of generating 3D images and, in turn, 3D content.

The biggest question is whether “synthetic” 3D looks as good as real 3D, when judged through the naked eye as covered by those dorky red and blue glasses.

Either way, there’s a good chance it’ll look better to Cowboys fans than anything that happens beneath the biggest boob tube on the planet.

Anything that causes the Modell’s pain, whether emotional, financial, or otherwise, is ok with me and pretty much everyone else here in Cleveland.
    Stick it to ‘em, Jerry!

Florio is an amateur comedian who gets off on being an asshole apparently. A parrot who doesn’t know any better but to repeat the same things over and over again.

It would be interesting to see how well this works. If 3D images could be broadcast on HD channels for the NFL package, why would I spend money on both season tickets and NFL Package?

  7. Favre On HGH says: Dec 12, 2009 10:02 AM

I wonder how Romo’s tears will look in 3d….

  8. DC_Bengals_Fan says: Dec 12, 2009 10:07 AM

The NFL needs to stop worrying about bigger TVs and diamond-crusted stadiums, and focus more on providing a fun game day experience average people can actually afford.
Why would I need to watch a game in 3D at the stadium? Reality is 3D. I can watch the actual players on the field.

  9. bearsrule says: Dec 12, 2009 10:07 AM

This stuff is great and entertaining, but it is also very expensive. Somebody, like the fans, will have to pay for it. Jerry, in all his hubris and zeal for bigger, better, and more modern will some day price Cowboy fans out of going to games. Regular folks don’t have bottomless pockets.

  10. Patsfan1776 says: Dec 12, 2009 10:12 AM

So they want you to go to a stadium and watch the game on a TV. Pay for ticket, parking, cram in a seat, have the guy next to you spill a $8 beer on you, wait in line for a toilet, and then watch the game on tv. People are dumber than I thought they were.

  11. Hooby says: Dec 12, 2009 10:15 AM

so do the thousands of fans who buy tickets but dont get in get 3d glasses to? or is that sorta like a one per seat deal
this is just jerry being jerry, trying to move the focus off the cowboys season and onto the cowboys.
@Jerry Jones (if he reads this website): nobody will ever forget that your team chokes in december like a fat person at an allyoucaneat. you’ll be lucky if you win one game, and you’ll be even luckier if there isn’t another 44-6, except this time you wont be able to win a playoff spot, because by week 17 you will already have been out of it.
florio, i apologize for the massive argument thats about to unfold. sincerely.

  12. AutumnWind999 says: Dec 12, 2009 10:26 AM

Amazingly, the actual living, breathing players on the field that you probably paid a couple hundred bucks to see will also be in 3D.

  15. Ron E says: Dec 12, 2009 10:41 AM

First off, if this trend of 3D is going to start happening everywhere, we need some decent 3D glasses. The red/blue cardboard cutouts are really annoying and never seem to work very well. The nice plastic ones at the theaters are much better, but still not good enough. 3D sunglasses in several styles should be sold that work with all this stuff, surely someone will start selling these assuming all 3D glasses work with all 3D video.
As for the 3D game at the game, the game is 3D to those watching there at the stadium, but you’re not on the field. 3D is kind of cheezy. For 3D to be good they would need cameras on the field so you can see the players run at you and/or the ball flying at you. Where is the XFL when you need it.

Blowzells tripping technique will be even more visible in 3D , but it doesn’t matter, as long as JJ is involved in the upcoming CBA. He probably pays these trivial fines for his favorite dirty player anyway.

  23. Viper21 says: Dec 12, 2009 11:19 AM

After seeing a game in the new stadium… I have to disagree with the comment that the video screens take away from the game. I think what they do is give all the fans in attendance a great view of the action. Even those in the upper seats where you cant clearly see everything. The Big Screens show everything very clearly, & in my opinion make the whole experience more enjoyable for all the fans in attendance, not just those who can afford the seats near the field. Regardless whether you’re a Cowboys fan or hater…. to see a game in this new stadium, you are seeing a new bar in the NFL experience, I especially like the way all fans can have a great experience, wealthy or not.

Nooooooooo nothing at all stupid about that.

    What morons.

If you’ve ever been to a Cowboys game, you’d know that Jones is pandering to the masses. That crowd has the attention span of your average toddler. They are easily the worst home crowd I’ve ever encountered. Its more about who’s wife has the biggest hair, thickest make up, snaziest pant-suit, and which Billy Bob just bought a new Hummer.

It’s just technology people. Through history I’m sure there were people who were afraid of electricity, cars, airplanes, but once they got over their fears these things became part of their lives.
3D will be in your homes before you know it. When you are sitting back in your Lazy Boy, raise a glass to Jerry and say a little ‘thank you.’
All technological advancements have to make their debuts somewhere.
And as for those of you who hate Jerry just because he’s Jerry, you’ll hate hime even more when he convinces the NFL to get rid of the socialist revenue sharing plan that lets the bottom feeders suck money off the teams that are profitable and give it to teams that just want to collect ‘NFL Welfare.’ And you know who you are bottom feeders.

    1) It is only for the 2nd half of the game (think about why that is!).
    2) Those cheap eye coverings hide identities
    3) Some reporter will write how “great” the technology is, the “innovator” Jerry Jones is, and another home loss is the designated scape goat’s fault not Jerry’s.

  37. russrpm says: Dec 12, 2009 2:01 PM

I’ve been a Cowboys fan since 1970, and this is the exact type of attact that was always made on Tex Schramm every time he raised the marketing bar in the NFL. Everyone bitched and moaned about how he was ruining the game, and everyone laughed about Texans being so gauche. Just like they talk about Jones now. The other similarity is that, after all the moaning, and all the execs from the other teams saying that they would “never allow something like that at our stadium”, after all that, they notice that the Cowboys are consistently one of the most profitable teams, that they consistently sell out the stadium, and the other teams meekly form a line and play follow the leader. So get ready everyone. You will be seeing all these innovations at your home stadium soon.

  38. antneejay2 says: Dec 12, 2009 4:06 PM

Do you think it’s possible that fans of teams that don’t lead the league in selling shit find any consolation in watching their teams play in late January?

  39. Dilagable says: Dec 12, 2009 4:07 PM

3D with the old red and blue glasses. Why waste the time and money. It will look horrible. If Jerry Jones wanted to do 3D then he should have spent another couple million on actual 3D screens like the HDTVs that are coming out. This is just ridiculous.

I am a football fan, so I don’t mind the Cowboys. I can like something about all 32 teams. But Jerry Jones is a piece……….can we just go to a football game? Can we just watch a football game.

The system they are using Sunday will require anaglyph (red & blue) glasses. :(
And no, Florio, it won’t look nearly as good as something filmed in actual 3-D. It’s a fantastic technology, but it’s still a fake, even if done well.
