Harbaugh: Calvin Johnson is as good as anyone

With 47 catches for 730 yards and four touchdowns, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson isn’t close to being the league leader in any of the major statistical categories.

But people who watch him play know he’s one of the best.

The latest league insider to praise Johnson is Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, who’s been watching plenty of film of Johnson this week as the Ravens prepare to play the Lions.

“Calvin Johnson, it’s a matchup nightmare,” Harbaugh said, per Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times. “He’s as good as anybody in the league. He’s tall, he’s fast, he’s got great hands, and he’s very tough.

“He goes up and catches passes. He’s not afraid to catch the ball over the middle. He’s just a tremendous player.”

Johnson’s numbers are down from last year in part because he’s missed two games with injuries, and in part because Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford has struggled to get him the ball. But Harbaugh says the major reason teams have been able to slow Johnson down is that they make stopping him the primary focus of their defensive game plans.

“Calvin gets pretty much doubled pretty much whenever he’s out there all the time,”
Harbaugh said.

Even if they double him all the time, the Ravens may have trouble matching up with Johnson, because Baltimore’s best defensive back, safety Ed Reed, listed as doubtful with groin and foot injuries. Johnson could be due for a big game against Baltimore.

And even if you’re not the best, playing against that Baltimore secondary(especially without Ed Reed) will certainly make you look like the best!

Nice of you to show the Lion’s some love, PFT. They’re a struggling franchise right now, but with players like CJ, they will bounce back and be competitive again…

“Johnson could be due for a big game against Baltimore.”
If Stafford was starting, perhaps. With Fumblepepper starting, doubtful.
Though if I remember accurately I think CJ was out for the couple games Culpepper started, so we haven’t seen the two healthy and together on the same field.
Not that it really matters. I’ve already written way too much on something completely inconsequential. Most Lions fans are mostly looking at the draft right now anyway.
    So, yeah.

Culpepper has plenty of experience from his days in Minnesota of throwing it up for grabs and letting your receiver get it. Big plus for Calvin, not many could put up a fight with him when its up for grabs.
Watch the end of Lions-Browns game, he is the one that caused the P.I. call. Guy dragged him out of bounds instead of letting him jump for it. They knew they have a better chance of risking the call than winning a jump ball with him.

I didnt realize getting 700 yards in 10 games is being stoped. Thats a 1100 yard average Flo. Thats not being stopped

  25. tatum32 says: Dec 13, 2009 7:07 AM

I remain unconvinced. Once dude is finally healthy (back spasms) gone, then we’ll see. Of course, it’d help if his QB wasnt sacked regularly. Its a miracle Stafford survived the season. We cannot annoint hime “the next Moss” far from it…he isnt even the next Boldin.

  26. BreakingTackles IN P-TOWN says: Dec 13, 2009 10:14 AM

Finally all of these loosers from last night offline picking on Chingonrungame just because he cant read or write. Anyways Megatron is a top five WR in this league. Randy Moss was on a sorry ass team we saw what he did, we see what happens with Fitz and broken face when Kurt is out, T.O. is older and slower. The only other two who can easily say are better are Andre, and Reggie I guess Megatron is actually 3rd best

Hahahahaha. Dude you are the funniest retard I think I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading their illiterate writing. Nobody even said anything about your name but yet you defended as if it were actually a good name lol. Your broken tard sentences and the complete idiocy you display on a public board were what people were talking about. Nothing you wrote made any sense whatsoever except to your little squirrel “BRIAN”. Except the thing about what you eat and the response is yes we do know what you eat. It’s rice, beans, and flour tortillas.
Can I please be added to your list? It sounds like that’s where all the popular people are going.
Before you try to speak, read, or write could you go to a kindergarten class and use your “BRIAN” to absorb as much, what for you would be, higher learning as possible.
maybe you can understand this better:
Go class to learn a kindergarten brian absorb you read higher speak before possible as write to a try.
    You dyslexic f#cktard.

By the way CJ is a beast and is a top 5 receiver in the league. His biggest problem this year is the lack of viable receivers outside of himself to draw defenders away from him. His biggest games came later on in the season when Pettigrew was dominating and helping by pulling safeties away from CJ because LB’s couldn’t cover Pettigrew by themselves. It hurt Calvin a lot having Pettigrew go down for the season. Pettgrew is a monster and next year when we actually have better receivers and all parts of the offense healthy playing together he will have another big season. Pettigrew was a great pick and he will be a great TE and weapon for years to come. A player like him will open up CJ so much for big plays that we will see Calvin putting up huge numbers for a while to come. But this year is a complete loss at this point.
When is the draft again? Not soon enough.
