We should have seen this one coming.
While watching the fourth quarter of the compelling Appalachian State-Montana game played under “watch out for the yellow line in the snow” conditions, we noticed an extremely intriguing item on the ESPN crawl.
So then we tracked down the Los Angeles Times article cited by ESPN, and there it was.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has offered $25 million for the privilege of hosting the boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
Last week, Staples Center in L.A. offered $20 million for the fight.
Mayweather promoter Richard Schaefer realizes that it’s a good development.
“I just added toner to the fax machine and had it serviced right before
I left Friday,” Schaefer told the Times. “So keep those offers coming.”
It’s a shrewd move by Jones. With a huge mortgage payment on the $1.1 billion venue and the possibility of a work stoppage on the horizon, Jones will be in much better shape to make his monthly nut if he schedules events like concerts and college football games and boxing matches and other attractions on the 355 days per year that the place isn’t being used as the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Articles posted on ESPN.Com last week also said that Jerry was turned down cold for the fight, by the fighters and the promoters! The egomaniac ain’t getting the fight!
Behind Al Davis, Jerry jones is the second biggest clown of the NFL.
I highly doubt that Jones will get the fight. Mayweather IS the man and has stated that he has no interest in fighting in the Jerry Center. Tax on winnings is huge too,Vegas won’t stick the fighters on income taxes. When you are pulling in 40 million alone just to fight before PPV numbers are added, taxes is a big deal. Look for it to be at the MGM Grand.
Vegas has also been in the running for the fight. Will be between Vegas and Texas due to no state tax apparently, not sure how that works(thought it is state of residence that gets it) but that is what everyone is saying.
Jones has the size advantage, T&M was mentioned as a Vegas site and capacity was 20k ish? Forgot exact number and don’t care to check.
Only advantage Vegas has is the ability to draw in the “high roller” crowd and can mark tickets up. They question Dallas’s appeal with late night activities centering around cow-tipping and shooting cans.
That is the commentary provided by local radio personalities, not mine. Could care less either way. MMA beats boxing any day.
Is he going to give tips to boxers as well? And say who he wants to participate in which matches? Idiot should stay the hell out of things he has no idea about. No wonder the Cowgirls can’t win anything.
Yeah this is pretty old news. It was reported 2 weeks ago that he was interested and then ealier this week that he was turned down. Not sure why that would have been news during a real college playoff game.
Screw JJ I hope they turn his circus into a used car lot
“Articles posted on ESPN.Com last week”
Why are you raving about last week? Things change over time, as you should know. Or maybe you don’t.
“Behind Al Davis, Jerry jones is the second biggest clown of the NFL. ”
You only say that because you heard or read about somebody else saying it. Try having an original thought sometime.
“I highly doubt that Jones will get the fight. Mayweather IS the man and has stated that he has no interest in fighting in the Jerry Center.”
I’ve never read that quote though I did read where his promotor conceled a tour of the stadium. Regardless, Mayweather will fight anywhere if the money’s right. You’re talking about a guy that forayed into professional wrestling within the last year. Why? It’s called 20 million dollars. Not sure what “Dancing With the Stars” gave him.
“Tax on winnings is huge too,Vegas won’t stick the fighters on income taxes.”
Neither state has a personal or corporate income tax.
“They question Dallas’s appeal with late night activities centering around cow-tipping and shooting cans.”
So you’ve never been to Dallas? You should go sometime.
“It’s a shrewd move by Jones.”
Of course it was. The stadium was planned as a year-round multi-event facility from the beginning so don’t act as if he woke up one day last week and said to himself “HEY! We can do more than play football there!” It’s like you’re dreaming about gorgonzola cheese when it’s clearly brie time, baby! Step into my office.
Damn he must want it bad!! 25 million!! Seats over 100 thousand people noway it won sell out $100 for nose bleeds up to $$???? Who knows what people are willing to pay to sit in that brand spanking new stadium!! PPV is $55 dollars alone not to mention HD view$65 , and how bout 3D $75 he’s a smart man he can even pay more! Boxing fans have be sleeping for years now!! To bad these fights never seem to fill the billing!! Corales vs luis castio best fight I ever saw and no body expected that!!!true boxing fan!! F–k UFC!!
Pacquino would kick Mayweathers ass….No matter the weight class……….

December 12, 2009 8:34 PM………So you’ve never been to Dallas? You should go sometime….
——————————————–
As if you would know………You don’t live there and i bet i been to more games in the Old cowboys stadium then you have…….You can’t afford to go to a regular season game much less a prize fight, so please get off the as if you know BS…
Vox, got a lot of time on your hands huh? Just because others may think like I do doesn’t make Jerry any less of a clown. Even your rant about my post didn’t deny it.
There is no income tax in Texas. Oil taxes do the work financing the State of Texas.
Jerry is the Man….Even if the team is not quite there yet…..Granny Parcells QUIT on him….. Go Jerry!!!!
Vegas is going to be leveraged into the best possible deal. If Jerry is willing to add to the pot for every counter offer then it can be his, but good luck with that.
Its a pretty big upset if this doesn’t go down in the MGM Grand. Consider that almost every American blockbuster boxing match in recent history has gone down in Vegas. The money has always been there, and its not going to dry up for the biggest fight boxing has had in a few years.
man you guys will jump at everything concerning Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, won’t you? Why should any of this concern any of you? Does Jerry come to where you work and check the conditions of your mop buckets?
Dance monkeys dance.
Jones is a lot of things… but a clown isn’t one of them. They guy is a brilliant merchandiser, marketer, and product deliverer.
However, I would like to see a fight between Wade Phillips and Flozel Adams. Then the Cowboys could get a coach.
They haven’t had one since Jimmy left…ok…maybe half of one with Parcels coaching retirement party. He was done before he took the job, and he knew it every time he cashed JJ’s checks.
Switzer – won wit Jimmy’s team
Campo – well…
Galey – well, well…
Phillips – oh well
355 days is 8 days less a year than you are a prick Florio. Props to SI for pointing out your site tanking now since you gave your soul to MSNBC. I’m sure you will fail just like them.
Way to go Jer Jer…Football is failing again in December, as usual…start a new sporting promotion…..vox, your g@y.
Dallas is the L.A. of the South, there is plenty of nightlife to keep everyone happy. Hasn’t everyone been to Vegas like 1000 times,…I mean its fun, but how about something different. Why not have the biggest fight of the decade in the best sports venue in the world? Besides, the hookers the more expensive in Vegas.
Jerry Jones may be big in Texas but he is not shit in Vegas. I doubt that Vegas will not hold the fight.
Jay-Jay should get into the plastic surgery business. Oh, wait….
LOL Vox…………you really fire up others on this site. You get taken out behind the virtual woodshed quite often, huh?
Here is the under card blowzel VS Justin Tuck
No holds fight only problem is blowzel would never go for a face to face fight
“With a huge mortgage payment on the $1.1 billion venue”.
Jerry put a lot of his $ into his the drive-in…but not nearly billion.
The City of Arlington provided over $325 million (including interest) in bonds as funding,[12][13] and Jones covered any cost overruns. Also, the NFL provided the Cowboys with an additional $150 million, as per their policy for giving teams a certain lump sum of money for stadium financing
