Fitzgerald leaves with knee injury

A bad night for the Arizona Cardinals has gotten worse.

How much worse remains to be seen.

On a deep throw from quarterback Kurt Warner on the first drive of the third quarter, receiver Larry Fitzgerald laid out in double coverage to make the catch.  As he hit the ground on his front, 49ers safety Dashon Goldson landed on Fitzgerald's shin, flattening his lower leg against his upper leg.

Slow to get up, Fizgerald limped off the field.  ESPN images from the sideline later showed Fitzgerald standing up, taking a step, and then sitting down on the ground.  He eventually walked off to the locker room under his own power, but still limping.

Michele Tafoya of ESPN reports that the limp improved as he walked deeper into the tunnel, and that x-rays will be taken.  He officially is questionable to return.

We're routinely amazed by the flexibility of NFL players.  The hit that Fitzgerald took tested the limits of the looseness of everything inside his knee; whether the ligaments and cartilage passed the test remains to be seen.

UPDATE:  Fitzgerald has returned, without a limp.

    @philthyphan ...

    Why? They've been imploding every December without any help from Madden.

    @mnmaverick ...

    With all due respect, is that anything like "the refs did it"?

    No. The Niners don't need referee assistance to win games. They don't lose to the Browns either. You guys should take notes.

    Well, it should be interesting to see how this plays out...what will the headline read...
    EVERYBODY ON THE OFFENSE QUIT ON THE TEAM....OR.....ENTIRE OFFENSE TAKES PLAYS OFF....I mean come on, if Moss can be dragged through the coals then why not the ENTIRE Cardnals offense....

    @Soup to Nuts ...

    My point was that a Minnesota fan might want to think twice before razzing another team about making excuses for a loss. As a Pack fan, I'm surprised you'd care. But then again, you are a child obsessed.

    I've already given my hearty congrats to the Browns ... as opposed to whining about who was injured or making up fantasies about what the refs did or didn't do and all those other umpteen nauseating tales you and your little lost lambs make for a loss.

    It's called sportsmanship. Maybe you should take notes.
