That might be all for Folk

Finding a holder with a larger profile didn’t change the fortunes of Cowboys kicker Nick Folk Sunday.

Folk went one-for-two in field goals Sunday, missing from 42 yards out.  He’s three-of-nine over his last five games, which would be a good average if this was baseball.  Folk hasn’t hit a kick over 36 yards during his recent slump.

“If you aren’t going to make all of them, you’ve got to make a certain
percentage,” coach Wade Phillips said after the game.  “He’s not making that certain percentage right now.”

Phillips admitted the team will look at all their options.  One option could be to use kickoff specialist David Buehler.  But Buehler … Buehler said recently he hasn’t even been practicing field goals much this season.

To recap: The Cowboys are carrying two kickers on their roster and neither one can kick field goals.

Maybe Steve Hauschka could redeem himself. Look at his replacement, Billy Cundiff. Cundiff hadn’t kicked a field goal in 3 years before being picked up by the Browns when Dawson was hurt. Cundiff did well, and got picked up by the Ravens. How many other positions can you be out of the league for so long and still have a chance at returning?

“So the Cowboys are carrying two kickers on their roster and neither one can kick field goals.”
    ZING!
I don’t understand how teams give up on kickers so easily. He’s had a bad stretch, but he’s been a good kicker for a few years now hasn’t he? I can remember David Akers going through stretches like this too, but the Eagles stuck with him.

  4. teke184 says: Dec 14, 2009 11:11 AM

The problem Wade’s going to run into is that there are only so many kickers out there right now before you start picking up guys who just got cut for shanking kicks, like Shane Suisson or Jason Elam.

Everyone says the cowboys lose in December but they scored a huge moral victory with that meaningless touchdown at the end of the game. I just don’t understand why they didn’t go for two, since San Diego obviously didn’t have a reason to care if they got it. It wasn’t like they’d be down 3 with the pat and a chance to win either. They weren’t going to recover the onside kick and then make a 72 yard field goal. All I’m saying is they had a chance to make it appear to have been even closer than it actually was, and they blew it.

  7. Tikkanen says: Dec 14, 2009 11:16 AM

Unbelievable. As a kicker, one only has two jobs – Kickoffs and field goals. Why in the world is the special teams coach not having them practice both, just in case??

  8. Jim Naizeeum says: Dec 14, 2009 11:16 AM

The team has two kickers…and one doesn’t even practice field goals.
I don’t care what anyone says…that’s good coaching.
I wonder if either of them could have connected from the 1 yard line…when they ended up with no points?

As a Vikings fan, I want the Cowboys to beat the Saints.
Thus, I am going to help out the Cowboys here.
Sign Steve Hauschka. The Ravens cut him earlier this year. He’s a very good kicker who will bounce back. He was in the Vikings training camp earlier. Hauschka will help the Cowboys win games this year.
There. Never say Vikings fans haven’t helped the Cowboys. Sheesh.

Well they could always look at picking up shaun suisham. He was fine on non pressure kicks and made every non pressure kick this season.

  11. dcsween says: Dec 14, 2009 11:30 AM

Shaun Suisham was their kicker before they drafted Folk (who, by the way, the Skins were thinking about drafting b/c he had some solid stats in college for PUNTING as well). Suisham is reliable at most distances … distance isn’t the variable with Suisham … his variable is clutch/not clutch. I think the Skins over-reacted by cutting him … but Gano showed up for the Skins in Oakland (not that there was anything close to a clutch kick involved).

That field goals are such an issue for this team–a team with extremely talented receivers, runners, and QB–says a lot about their state. How can a team with this much talent have such a hard time scoring touchdowns, and even getting first downs for that matter? Their nearly-scoreless first halves in recent weeks are just astoundingly pathetic.
Personally, I blame the coaches. Sometimes, like that fantastic fake Romo pulled on their touchdown yesterday, their play-calling is great, and it shows what the players are capable of. But most of the time the play calling looks timid, tired, and predictable. Say what you will about the current guys and T.O., but if you can’t create a high-powered offense with these tools, then you can’t create a high-powered offense.
Fire Phillips and Garrett. Hire Shanahan and a solid, underrated defensive coordinator. And the team could well explode next year. Don’t do that, and the team is toast.

  15. dcfan-1212450 says: Dec 14, 2009 11:53 AM

Adam Vinateiri said it best guys when he said he was never the best kicker. He said plenty of kickers have far better legs than he does. What makes him known is he can hit a clutch kick, time and time again. That defines a kicker guys. Suisham hit every unimportant kick of the season, and missed all the important ones. Had he made those the Skins would have beat the Cowboys and Saints. Nick Folk is having the same problem. A kicker is defined by his clutch kicking. If he can’t make an important kick, he is not a good kicker. Personally i hope the Cowboys keep Folk, so he can miss more and more and help contribute to the firing of Wade Phillips and the downfall of the Cowboys playoff hopes…

a few more year we will be saying “remember when the cowboys was america’s team and Jerry jones had an eye for talent””
Jerry never had an eye for talent. His better teams were always filled by Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcell’s evaluations.
Smith, Aikman, Romo, etc., none were there because Jerry picked them.
The only one Jerry should get credit for is Irvin and that’s sort of a no-brainer when you’re arguably the best WR in college football.

  18. Tikkanen says: Dec 14, 2009 12:34 PM

@Outsyder: People always think Michael Irvin was drafted by Jerry/Jimmy because he played at Miami, but Irvin was part of the last draft run by the old crew of Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt, and Tom Landry.

Any team that hires Shanny gets his buddy Bob Slowik as D-coordinator. Same guy that oversaw the Broncos D in ’08.
    Careful what you wish for…

I love how some homer Cowboys fan told me last week that I was wrong when I said Wade didn’t have confidence in his kicker.
Where are you at now, jackass??

  22. Haywood Jabuzzoff says: Dec 14, 2009 1:01 PM

Folk?? We’re talking about Folk being the reason Dallas lost last night?? Gimme a break. Dallas found SD’s weakness in stopping the run, and didn’t stick with it. Chargers played well against the pass, but struggled against the run. Not to mention a severe lack of any sense of urgency or purpose on Dallas’ part.
And whatever it was that crawled up Dallas’ collective ass & had them convinced to run the same damn goal line play 4 straight times & not change a thing… I hope it died, but I’m 100% sure it hasn’t.
Individually, Dallas has some of the very best players in the game starting for them, which leads many “experts” to pick them as playoff-bound before the season even starts. You can’t blame the experts, everywhere else they look and see that kind of talent, it usually pays off for that team. But Dallas can’t put it together & get it done. Simple as that.
I’m beginning to think January is Romo’s favorite month to play golf.
    And Wade’s talking about Folk… (eyes-roll)

  24. catch22 says: Dec 14, 2009 1:10 PM

Ok its official the boys won’t make the playoffs. The coaching is pathetic they have plenty of talent to win just a dumb ass as a coach who shows no emotion win or lose and looks like he’s is more concerned with where his next meal is coming from then if the boys are going to win or not. So Jerry (aka the new AlDavis) please for all the fans you so call just want to win for please fire Wades fat worthless ass and please fire Jason Garrett any defense can predict what the offense is going to do, hell even my wife who know nothing about football was guessing the plays right so i’m sure the defense can.

One of the worst-run franchises in the league. They’re not quite down in the Oakland-Cleveland level of things but they’re certainly down around Redskins territory.

I know everyone loves to slam the Cowboys but the truth is that David Beuhler is a kickoff specialist but he also plays on the other special teams units as well. He wasn’t drafted to be a place kicker. He was drafted to kickoff and play on the other special teams units. And it is strange that Phillips says he doesn’t work on field goals when I watched him warm up for 30 minutes at the game yesterday kicking field goals with Romo holding some of them. He just isn’t a very good place kicker but I don’t think Wade wants to say that.

As a Cowboys fan, I am not afraid of “dem Saints.” We can and we will beat them. Chris Redman and no-name running backs gave them a run for their money. They are such an inconsistent team, it’s not even funny. Dallas is going to win. The Redskins will take care of the little Giants and the Boys will take the Wildcard. And you can take that to the bank.
P.S. I don’t come back to posts so if you want to flame – g’head.
