Theismann says he could do better than Randle El

The Redskins have played rather well over the last month, but didn’t have a win to show for it until Sunday’s destruction of the Raiders.

Still, not everyone in Redskins Nation is happy.

“In every sunny day there’s usually one little cloud that sits out there, and for us, it’s Antwaan Randle El returning punts,” Joe Theismann said Monday on his ESPN Radio show, as transcribed by DC Sports Bog.

“He averages 3.9 yards a punt return. I will say this in all humility: I could do that. Okay? As a matter of fact, I have done it. And I’ve done it better. I catch the football. This isn’t an I thing, this is an I don’t know what going on in management when it comes to putting Antwaan Randle El back returning punts.

“He
dropped a second-down pass, hit him right in the hands. Muffed a punt
again. You know, in a game that was close, we would all be clamoring
about what Antwaan did,” Theismann.   (Our favorite part: “in all humility.”)

Theismann really did better, once upon a time.  He averaged 10.5 yards on punt returns in 1974.

Anyone that has watched a few Redskins games this year can’t help but agree with Theismann and wonder whether Randle El will soon be discarded like so many other overpaid free agents of Snyder’s past.

I’ve never seen an organizations former players bash its current players more often than the Washington Redskins. Don’t blame the players when your owner sucks.

washed up. they should get dante hall back there @ pr.

  3. Gnarburger says: Dec 14, 2009 2:55 PM

When you give a guy a big contract to play WR based on the fact that he THREW a TD in the Super Bowl you probably shouldn’t be surprised when he isn’t very good at WR. The decline of his PR abilities is a bit more surprising, but these things happen when guys get on the wrong side of 30. Probably time to just let the guy go.

  4. PUR-D33 says: Dec 14, 2009 3:04 PM

Get rid of him, quickly! I would rather start on the 1 yard line after every punt than see this fool muff another one!

Nice research Florio..way to back the post up with some facts. Being a Steeler fan in Pittsburgh, Randel had maybe a few great moments while a Steeler, but for the most part he sucked..so overrated.

  6. downwithdansnyder says: Dec 14, 2009 3:06 PM

And I’m sure Jeoy Sunshine will admit Randle El is a better punter. After all, Sunshine did average 1yd per kick….lol

  7. filthymcnasty says: Dec 14, 2009 3:10 PM

Isn’t this the same guy who changed his name while in the Heisman race?
But yeah…Joey Sunshine is right. Randle El plays great week 1 in each of the past 3-4 seasons and then starts chugging c**kmeat sandwhiches. This year, it’s probably because Portis is dogging out his own pile.
Snyder, start with disc jockey Vinny and CLEAN HOUSE.
    Hail!

  8. mike428 says: Dec 14, 2009 3:11 PM

The real question is, can Randle El announce better in the booth than Theismann?

  9. parasonic says: Dec 14, 2009 3:11 PM

the rest of the season doesn’t matter other than to scout the talent to pull out of the fire sale that will be the washington redskins’ offseason. ARE is as good as gone. Hopefully marko mitchell will get a shot at WR. If it pans out well we can have devin thomas and marko on the outside and move moss to the slot where he can dominate. then trade cooley to the highest bidder for a pick or O lineman.

  10. DanSnyder says: Dec 14, 2009 3:13 PM

I like Randle El but he definately cannot return punts. It’s like he thinks he is faster then he really is. His perception of what he can do is much better then what he really can do.

  11. BleedGreen says: Dec 14, 2009 3:15 PM

What this guy said. It would make sense for Danny Boy to, in the off season, being that there is no cap next year presently, cut all of his ‘big names’. Portis, Randle El, Hall, anyone over 29 making more than 1.5Million a year. Start from scratch, build your team through the draft with younger guys, and let them develop with a coach. Hell, keep Zorn, he’s not bad. But get an infusion of youth, and let them develop for 3-4 years and then see where you’re at before signing every big name you can.

  12. wydok says: Dec 14, 2009 3:16 PM

I think the Redskins hamper development. I bet Randle El wouldn’t be washed up if he stayed in Pittsburgh

  13. bigbillnocmd says: Dec 14, 2009 3:17 PM

He is right. Week in and week out something bad happens on punt returns with Randel El back there. This sucks because its a direct reflection of coaching. OK, Randel El is terrible back there. Thats said. now why does he continually be put in situations we ALL know he just isn’t good at anymore? This one is on the coaching staff. they put him in those situations.
I love the direction of this team right now but god dam! Lets get someone else back there already.
Just don’t let J.C. walk. he has more character in any one player facing adversity (and bad line), and given time he has proven he can pick apart defenses. Could you imagine if the skins got that prick Cutler. he acts like a douche, makes decisions like a douche and seems to not give a shit about winning. He is a fricking cry baby!
    HAIL SUCKA!

As much as I dislike Theismann, I have to concur. I could perform this feat as well. Catch the ball then immediately lean, fall or jump forward. That’s two yards right there. Hell, I’ll do it for the league minimum.

I thought the most amazingly stupid thing NFLN did was bring Millen back to NFL broadcasting, but they managed to trump themselves by bringing back Joey T.

  16. jamaltimore says: Dec 14, 2009 3:39 PM

Funny with what about 70 million in guarenteed money on the sidelines, Fat Albert, Angelo Hall, cause he can’t play or say D and Clinton, the redskins actually are starting to look like a team rather than a group of overpaid slackers. I know danny and vinny are two busy blowing each other over arakpo and that finally the player the didn’t need is now showing that he can play. Fred Davis, good pick considering normally your PROBOWL tight end is playing in front of him so at least now he’s not just eating cap space and roster spot.
Here’s hoping they win all of their remaining games and then after week 18 Zorn stands up at the press conference and says thanks for the opportunity to coach here but I QUIT! Dan and Vinny good luck to you but this is the worst managed organzation in football and I no longer want to be a part of this laughing stock. I deserve better and the fans deserve better! Zorny slowly showing that he’s the ONLY one with some class in that organization.
Hopefully instead of watching the trainwreck most redskins fans are noticing that once again the best team in the area is still fighting for a playoff spot. Stop letting Danny steal your money for an inferior product and spend the extra couple of minutes to go up 95 to watch the Ravens!

  17. WashingtonRedOookies says: Dec 14, 2009 3:40 PM

Letting the ball hit the ground would be better than what REL does. It would take a Redskins bounce sometimes.

  18. Hosstyle In Tampa says: Dec 14, 2009 3:41 PM

It’s hilarious that Florio and the crew at PFT will run with the “Redskins idiotically overpay free agents” line, while simultaneously running with the “Buccaneers’ owners are cheap and won’t pay (for those same overpaid Redskin FAs)”. Which is it Florio??

Honestly, I don’t think you know what you are saying. That is only one real vocal former player that is adamantly against Snyder and that would be Riggins. Theismann hosts his own show on a Snyder owned station. Trust me, he does not like to bash the Redskins at all. He is always picking the Redskins to win every game. Watch that show playbook on NFL Network and you will see.
I do agree with you that Snyder has ZERO clue when it comes to running this team and putting it together. He is probably one of the worst owners in the league right now.

Randel El was a nice addition, years ago for the Skins, but his problem is simple, he is getting old. It appears clear this is probably his last season as a Skin. He has a lot of trouble getting seperation, can not break tackles, has lost his speed, and can not return punts. The one thing he can do, the Redskins dont utilize, and that would be running a wildcat like formation. Theisman is being extra critical, but he is right. If the Skins for once do something right, they will discard these high priced players on offense, and draft accordingly.

Given enough time, any idiot will eventually luck out and say something right.
It’s hard to recognize, though, when you stopped listening, long before that ever happens.
In the giantcathouse, “Theismann says…” is the equivalent of “Simon says… roll your eyes.”
Sure, he could probably do better than Randle El. But who is listening and who really gives a flip, if the stats prove he can? Not like he’s gonna go out tomorrow and do so.
He may be right, but there’s nothing productive about even saying so, so why say it? It certainly isn’t gonna change my opinion that the man has been hit too many times and had the sense knocked out him and a live mic is the last thing he needs.

  26. Bubby Brister says: Dec 14, 2009 5:31 PM

He was nice for two things during his stint in Pittsburgh: the occasional reverse and as a return guy (as a matter of fact, the Steelers had been looking for his “replacement” until Stefan Logan panned out this year), but the money the ‘Skins forked out for him based on his one play in the Super Bowl and reputation as a speedster was laughable. He’s older now, so it doesn’t surprise me in the least bit that the two-trick-pony is finished.

  28. nationscapital10 says: Dec 14, 2009 6:10 PM

No one can defend that BUM. He sucks, has always sucked, and catching 30 balls in Pittsburgh did not make him good.

  29. golongboyee says: Dec 14, 2009 6:10 PM

Randle El is just another example of the Deadskins over-paying for crap……..Standard Operating Procedure.

They should do what the Bengals do and get a player off the scrap heap. Allen Rossum. I think he got hurt but it wasnt season ending and hes now a free agent.
The Redskins know what Rossum can do b/c of all the times he lit them up as an Eagle. Im sure if you bring him in this week he could do better then 3.5 yards per return.
Also he might come in handy when the Redskins play Dallas. He might want to serve up so revenge for getting cut. It cant hurt its not like the Redskins are over flowing with talent. Cut someone from the roster and give Rossum a shot at the return duties. If it doesnt work out then cut him and sign the guy back to the team that they cut to make room for Rossum.

  34. sstearman says: Dec 14, 2009 7:00 PM

Look, RANDLE EL, as its properly spelled, was a relatively good return guy when he was in Pittsburgh, and he was an x-factor type of player. But then again, he had a more aggressive offensive coordinator in Ken Whisenhunt during most of his years with the Steelers. When you have a coach that knows how to utilize a players abilities and is able to pull that potential out of them, you can have a great player.
As far as him as a Redskin, I didn’t like the signing at all when he first came to Washington. He definitely got overpaid no question. His age is becoming a factor, but really what else do you have to fill in for him right now. We do have Devin Thomas, but he is still very raw when it comes to special teams. We have tried using Santana Moss, but he has lost a step as well. Plus he is your NUMBER 1 RECEIVER (Moss I mean, not Randle El). God forbid he gets lit up on a return.
Therefore, Randle El is the only option right now. For those of you that think we should put Hall back there to return punts, THE GUY IS HURT AND HASN’T PLAYED FOR OVER 3 WEEKS! Jesus christ, you come to a football site most likely on a daily basis, but you are still not informed. Get a hold of yourselves.
Bottom line, we do need to get rid of Randle El after this year, or give him a huge pay cut and keep him on as your number 3 or 4 receiver. I think he still has at least a year left on his deal but I really don’t know the details. One thing the Skins might be able to look for in the later rounds of the draft. There are some pretty speedy guys coming out this year, otherwise you need to put Devin Thomas back there next year.

I would love to not have to ever hear Theismann or his name again.

  36. Brewster says: Dec 14, 2009 7:21 PM

He was overpaid when they took him from the Steelers. They were foolish to re-sign him for as much as they did in 2005-6?
They can do much better in free agency, though that’s a scary thing with Snyder as he may pay too much again to another mediocre FA especially if Vinny yes-man is still around.
Actually it doesn’t matter what they do with him, they’ve got far bigger problems than Randle El, like no football intelligence in the front office. If they packaged up Randle El, Vinny and Danny-boy and sent them to the Raiders in exchange for JaMarcus the Skins would come out ahead.

  37. edgy says: Dec 14, 2009 8:11 PM

    1974 – 15 returns 10.5 average.
    1974 – 2 returns 2.5 average
    17 returns 9.5 average.
Oh and he did leave out the fact that 44 yards came in one return. A good punt returner can do good things but a lot of that can be hurt by the team’s performance. How many times have you seen a guy rip off a long one and then end up screaming when you see the yellow hanky from an unnecessary block that wipes it out. Given that others aren’t doing any better as returners, I’d lay a lot of blame on the play of the entire return team.

    Might be because you’re an f-ing know-it-all?
