Losman to sign with Raiders

J.P. Losman has found his way back into the NFL.

Mike Florio reports that Losman and the Oakland Raiders have agreed to a deal.   It’s believed to be a one-year contract.  Losman was in Oakland Tuesday to take a physical with the team.

We’re told the team was heavily influenced by Losman’s play in the UFL and his development under Jim Fassel.

Losman was Buffalo’s first-round pick in 2004 out of Tulane, but spent this season in the United Football League.  His Las Vegas Locomotives won the UFL title.

Raiders starter Bruce Gradkowski has two injured knees, so the Raiders starter this week is unknown.  Tom Cable did not say Monday whether he’d go with Charlie Frye or JaMarcus Russell.

Now he’s got another choice.

It’s hard to imagine Losman starting Sunday, but. it would not be a surprise to see him get a look before the end of the season.

I love how Mike Florio reports but his puppies type it up.

It would be cool if the UFL turned into a sort of farm league for the NFL. Guys like Losman would be a perfect example of what it could happen if you play well there.
Also, the UFL should try to be aired on most cable companies.

Mike Florio reports? Did I just enter some crazy universe where Mike Florio is used as source on his own website? What is going on here? Has the whole world gone crazy?! Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the rules?!

i wish JP all the best and think he’ll do well in the right situation. He has tremendous upside and was unfortunate enough to get drafted into a quarterback graveyard (where for some reason the former QB coach is now our OC…) Honestly I would have liked to see him throw to TO and Lee Evans this year, I think good things could have happened.

I thought you said he found his way back into the NFL, then you say he signed with the Raiders. Which is it?

  12. d3murf says: Dec 15, 2009 7:36 PM

YEAH!!!! That’s my boy! They want a good deep ball thrower? Now they have one! I think Losman could build on what Gradkowski has done, and be a nice veteran and future starter.

I believe the Raiders were more heavily influenced by Russell’s play than Losman’s. Oakland was semi-competitive with Gradkowski behind center, and he’s not very good. Losman doesn’t have to do much to outplay JaMarcus.

  14. RavensFreak00 says: Dec 15, 2009 7:42 PM

The Raiders are heavily influenced by anyone who can run fast. J.P. Losman gives them that.

  15. theTRUTHwillSETuFREE says: Dec 15, 2009 7:43 PM

YES!!! Good news….does this mean Jamarcus isn’t gonna get the start this weekend?? I still hope to see Cable make the move to Frye. He tore it up in the pre-season. But I love this move to bring one of the Top Players out of the UFL to improve our QB situation. Nice Pickup Raiders!!

  16. Contra says: Dec 15, 2009 7:46 PM

I also like the idea of the UFL turning into a farm league for the NFL. It would be cool to see if they wear the team patches of the NFL team they are under.

  17. DT79 says: Dec 15, 2009 7:49 PM

About time! The fact that guys like Kellen Clemens, Matt Moore, etc. had backup jobs in the NFL, but Losman couldn’t get a sniff, was a joke. Great pickup for the Raiders. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts there in 2010.

I hope Losman doesn’t go into orbit around Gi-Normus Russell when he get’s into camp. The Raiders have lost so many good men that way…

  24. tian says: Dec 15, 2009 8:02 PM

So, this is great news for the UFL. JP Losman is a success story for them, and it proves that they can actually help the NFL with player development.
They may be popping corks over at the UFL headquarters over this.

  25. FunkFootball.Blogspot.com says: Dec 15, 2009 8:06 PM

Call me crazy, but this could open the door for Fassel to Oakland. Cable is definitely done after this year, and remember when Fassel wrote Davis that letter last year?
Fassel may be the Raiders best option to coach this team.

  26. GreeneBlitz says: Dec 15, 2009 8:07 PM

Go JP, I support ya, he is a lot better QB than given credit for.

  27. NomNoms says: Dec 15, 2009 8:08 PM

I hope JP does well. Pretty sure he wont. As a bills fan i still cant figure out whats worse, the ass clown collection of QB’s weve had over the last 10 years, Or the the slew of halftard coaches since Marv. Or maybe its the confused old man running the ship that still thinks a gallon of milk cost a nickel. Talk about trying to make a dollar outa 15cents

Florio has sources, in his years of being refused entry into pressboxes he made the acquaintance of quite a few security guys, and they text him who comes and goes. He fills in the blanks (or makes stuff up, if need be).

  30. PDXNinerfan says: Dec 15, 2009 8:28 PM

And poor Jim Fassel and his open letter to coach the Raiders results in his grooming a QB for them and remaining in the UFL. I feel for the guy — he should have been called up too.

  31. HarrisonHits says: Dec 15, 2009 8:41 PM

It’s a sad day for any NFL team when JP Loserman is a step up from the QBs they already had. He was awful in Buffalo.

  32. jon says: Dec 15, 2009 8:56 PM

I wish JP nothing but the best. He had some flashes of greatness in Buffalo. He was a product of having a different O-Coordinator every year he was in the league(or so it seemed). He is a lot better than he was ever given credit for, and it always seemed like his leash was way too short.

  33. Big Tex says: Dec 15, 2009 9:08 PM

How bad is the QB situation in Oakland when some of their fans are happy about JP Loserman. More than twice as many losses as wins, more INTs than TDs, and a reputation for being an arrogant prima dona. Wait, on second thought, he sounds like the perfect Raider QB.

Heard a rumor that once cut, JaMarcus was going to try out for the Raiderettes since his measurements are on par with an average Raiderette – except for his 6’6 height and 275-ish poundage.

Its a sad sad day when as a Raiders fans I’m excited about anything related to J.P. Losman. Especially if the news is him possibly and hopefully starting on sunday. And I mean this sunday. Anything to keep JaWalrus(Thanks to however came up with that) off the field

The local high school qb could outperform JaMarcus Russell at this point. Great news for oakland that he won’t be starting anymore, even though this bust set the raiders back a few seasons in finding a good QB.

    QB1 – Frye
    QB2 – Losman
    QB3 – McFadden
    QB4 – Lechler

Surprised to see so much support for Losman. His stint in Buffalo was pretty bad. Had no pocket presence, held onto the ball to long, took a million sacks, and missed open receivers. He had additional trouble reading blitz packages and making audibles. But whatever, literally any QB who ever was on a practice squad in the NFL is an upgrade from Jemarcus Russell.

  54. encinitasraider says: Dec 16, 2009 10:06 AM

This is just a tryout for next year. There is more of a chance Grad will be starting next year and Lossman will be 2nd string while JRUSS sits at 3rd string…

Instant upgrade at QB for the Raiders, and that’s saying something considering we’re talking about Losman here.
