Bettis: Steelers lost their spirit

Jerome Bettis has seen his share of Steelers teams that have fought through adversity.  This year’s version doesn’t pass the sniff test.

“The Steelers are done.  It’s not official yet, but pretty much.  When you lose your spirit, then everything is pretty much gone,”
Bettis said on the Dan Patrick Show Wednesday. “And that’s what I saw when they hit the field against the
Cleveland Browns.”

We’ve heard Bettis speak on a variety of football topics and he’s usually cautious to throw a team, especially his former team, under the . . . well, you know.

“It tells me the leadership isn’t there,” Bettis said. “There was a lack of commitment. The season is basically over.”

Bettis doesn’t think that Mike Tomlin’s message is getting through to the team. Tomlin has largely avoided criticism during the team’s collapse, but Bettis’ words are noteworthy.

“I know there had to be a disconnect between the head coach’s message and the players.  You hear coach Tomlin talking about unleashing hell, and they go out and lay an egg . . . I don’t think the players responded to it in practice, either week in practice: The Oakland week or the Cleveland week.”

Tomlin isn’t going anywhere, so Bettis’ comments make us think the Steelers could be in for some dramatic roster movement this offseason to find players willing to listen.

Who performs over the next three weeks may go a long way towards deciding what Steelers get to stay.

I think Bettis is right on the money.
It’s the only reasonable explanation, if you think about it.

I’m so sick of the damn Steeler fans bitching about their team. You have more SB wins than any other team in the league, quit yer damn whining already.
Apparently, Steeler fans never shut up, winning or losing.

It’s so refreshing to hear a washed up athlete pipe in about his old team and how they don’t have the fire they used to. We need more of those.

I still believe that we’re seeing the real Tomlin team.
    Cowher’s fingerprints are nearly faded.

I am a Steeler fan. But I do agree with you John, Tomlin did win a Superbowl, but he is proving that he can’t handle adversity or motivate a team when things go bad. He will never be a Cowher or Noll.

  12. VoteGreenParty says: Dec 16, 2009 1:00 PM

I have been thinking the exact same thing, and I hope the Steelers hear what Bettis has said.
That said, Tomlin is NOT going to improve this team by threatening to pull them off the starting roster. We have seen what they are capable of. That is, they are capable of beating any team out there!
What the Steelers need to do:
    1) Watch the replays of their wins against the Broncos and Vikings this year (or possibly of Super Bowl 43) to restore confidence and establish a game plan. By the way, that passing offense we had worked great…why’d we change?
    2) Stop getting so worked up, relax, and realize that this confusion could come from a bunch of things, but that the Steelers need to have a unified goal. With a divided Steelers team, even the weakest opponents can conquer.
    3) After all this has been said and done, let’s make Green Bay (and everyone else) remember why every Pittsburg Steeler draws fear into QBs and linemen alike – we have to hit them so hard, they don’t want to play!
Those who played under Coach Cowher might remember, “You stay focused, and you’ll play only one way, and that’s physical!”
    In conclusion: Go Steelers!

Yeah, Cowher never had a team struggle after winning a Super Bowl…
I’m sure current Steeler players really appreciate a guy who retired 3 years ago calling them out for the 3rd or 4th time this season. Especially after he won a Super Bowl in the last year of his career as a role player.
    No offense Jerome.

  18. bbq says: Dec 16, 2009 1:22 PM

I think it’s funny that people always mention the Steelers’ losses to the Browns and the Raiders, but not to the Chiefs.
Now, I’m a Chiefs fan, but I’ll admit that the Raiders are quite possibly a better team this year than my Chiefs. However, I think this observation speaks to the fact that people see the Raiders as more of a perennial failure. The names “Raiders” and “Browns” are readily identifiable with being a bottom-of-the-barrel team.
I’m just glad the Chiefs aren’t quite there yet.

  19. TrueFan says: Dec 16, 2009 1:22 PM

I think you all are over-thinking this thing. I love the phrases people use for losing. “Came out flat”, Lost their heart”, etc. How about they just played badly? They lost to Cleveland because on THAT DAY Cleveland had the better team.
You don’t have to be jacked up, hyped up, “ready to unleash hell” to win a game. That kind of Rah-rah emotion lasts for about 5 minutes after the speech and after that it is execution of your game plan and about matching up with the other teams’ talent.
If any mental mistake was made I think it was that the Steelers went into that Cleveland game thinking they were a vastly superior team that didn’t have to play hard to win.
Can’t we just call it what it is? The Steelers are not nearly as talented as they used to be and until they rebuild their roster with the right talent they are an average team at best.

  20. dirtythirtyfour says: Dec 16, 2009 1:25 PM

Hey, REAL steeler fans remember that Bill Cowher had 2 consecutive losing seasons at the end of the 90′s. Did you forget his 6-10 season? I’d like to see the steelers shut it down and get a high draft pick, and build to another superbowl 2 years from now.

  21. Citizen Strange says: Dec 16, 2009 1:27 PM

The Steelers just aren’t catching the breaks they caught last season. They won the close games last year because their defense was the best in football.
This year it’s not quite as good and if the defense has a “meltdown” and gives up 20 points and doesn’t score a touchdown of their own the Steelers will usually lose.
Their Super Bowl win was just incredibly lucky.
Before the miracle drive for the game winning TD with 35 seconds left Roethlisberger had led the Steelers to his usual 13 points of offense.
If not for James Harrison’s miracle interception return for a TD to end the half the Steelers would have lost.
Roethlisberger’s come from behind wins are usually of the 17-14 or 13-10 variety. He’s not winning any 35-31 shootouts.
The Steeler defense scored two touchdowns in their win over the Vikings. If not for that the Steelers lose.
Roethlisberger does not put up points on the scoreboard against any half decent team and against the worst defense in the NFL Cleveland Browns he put of six.
From the bottom of my heart I think Dennis Dixon could have put up more.

Look at your drafts…the only impact player you’ve drafted in the last 5 years is Lamar Woodley…Heath Miller, Mendenhall, Timmons and Holmes are nice players…and then a few average guys (particularly the o-lineman you’ve drafted…Starks, Colon & Essex aren’t the foundation of a formidable line). For a team that historically lets players leave to FA and doesn’t sign big name FAs, that’s not enough talent in the draft. Harrison, Farrior, Hampton, A. Smith, Kirschke, Keisel are all old. Ben and Polamalu are beat up to hell with enough concussions between them to open a neurology clinic. Lot of work to be done for the Steelers to climb back into the mix next year. Bettis is right about this year – DONE! And yes, we Ravens fans will take that as an early Christmas gift, no matter how we end up the season!!!

The Steelers aren’t going to beat the Packers. You guys struggled to keep the Chiefs, Raiders, and Browns from scoring points. What makes you think you’ll be able to stop a much more potent offense like the Packers? Even if you hold the Packers to 14-20 points, the Steelers offense won’t be able to match that. Who scares the Packers? Mendenhall? Not likely. We’ve contained some of the best running backs in the league already this year. Peterson, Gore, Rice. What receivers scare us? Ward? Woodson will have him covered all day. Your offensive line is worse than ours. At least ours is starting to come together and block.
    Packers 24

The Cowher’s team argument is weak. Cowher coached his last team to an 8-8 record. Tomlin coached “Cowher’s team” to 10-6 and 12-4 and the Super Bowl. Besides this years team lost what? 2 decent starters on defense from last year’s and Nate Washington? It’s basically the same team.

Isn’t your town full of crack addicts and drug smugglers? Isn’t the city’s motto “Don’t Snitch”? Don’t you wish your team had 2 titles in the last 5 years? Exactly Bum…keep wearing that silly purple and eating fish samiches…good luck ALMOST making the playoffs.

  37. sar14 says: Dec 16, 2009 2:24 PM

1-11 Cleveland had 3 days to prepare for the Steelers’ offense and they responded with a patchwork defense that beat up the Steelers and denied a TD. Let’s see….Steeler’s offense is 4th in NFL in total yards but 15th in scoring, they are absolutely awful in Red Zone and the QB has thrown 11 ints. (several in the end-zone that have killed scoring drives), but the head coach crys and continues to cry about how the Steeler’s defense is not making the big play.
Throw your defense under the bus, play merry-go-round with half the roster then wonder why there is a disconnect with the players. (I wonder if those tactics worked with the Vikings where his defense against the pass, finished dead last in the NFL.) I just can’t wait for Tomlin to bring in players who do respond to his coaching style…nothing like having a bench full of overachieving mediocre players posting 8-8 seasons.
Oh so true…Tomlin is in way over his head and looking like a true Gruden disciple.

  38. Holeinone09 says: Dec 16, 2009 2:33 PM

Can’t really argue with what Bettis said, especially after the last 2 games. Maybe he will wake them up since for some reason Tomlin hasn’t been able to. I do fault Tomlin for allowing things to get this bad at this point. He is the head coach and has to be accountable.
They have played terrible ball in just about every area recently. It may be the case that the Packers will beat them badly. However, in my opinion, if they play like they are CAPABLE of playing (and that’s a big IF), they can and would beat the Packers and in fact anybody else in the league, on a given Sunday. They have the talent, but they are underachieving even with the injuries to key players.
They don’t seem to have any confidence, and have been playing more to not lose than to win. I think 1 win makes a major difference in their attitude and level of confidence. I hope this is the week they turn it around. And if they do run the table because of this, and manage by a miracle to sneak into the playoffs, then look out Steeler-haters.
If not, we take a year off from the playoffs, and life still goes on.
    Good luck, Steelers.

    ***********************************************
Thank you. People seem to forget that Tomlin did not come in with a team that had been that great the previous year (unless you consider having a .500 to be the hallmark of a great team). There were definite morale issues (e.g., players who thought someone other than Tomlin should have been named coach), there were questions at offense, there were ST issues, there was a city that didn’t want Cowher to leave, and a host of other issues.
The present situation might be more of a challenge for Tomlin than what he dealt with his first year as coach, but to say that Tomlin has never handled any type of adversity or pressure before as a head coach is simply wrong. People need to relax.
On a side note – although I don’t necessarily disagree with Bettis in this case, hasn’t he come out criticizing the team before, like earlier this year? This is in response to the Florio remark: “he’s usually cautious to throw a team, especially his former team, under the . . . well, you know.”

I want the crystal ball everyone else is using to predict the Steelers future over the next few years. (We can chalk this kind of talk up as hopeful thinking).
No matter who the Steelers played this year their biggest loss was by 7 points (Browns game). This means that they were in every game this year regardless of opponent. A few less turnovers here and a few kick return coverages there the Steelers are probably in the playoffs. Does this team deserve to make the playoffs, NO!!!!! But a few changes and improvements next year the Steelers will be right back to their winning ways.
@ Child Please! – Are you a Bengals fan? Sorry to hear that its a weekly struggle to sell out Paul Brown stadium. Steelers sell out every game and the season ticket waiting list is easily in double digits. LOL

  42. steelersmichele says: Dec 16, 2009 2:51 PM

Citizen Strange. I read your post and I’m thinking–duh!!! Your post, while correct, was also kind of stupid.
Of course that’s how we won. But the point is we won. Last year, all the breaks went our way on offense and defense and that’s fine with me. If our Super Bowl win was incredibly lucky, I’ll take it. Luck is sometimes what teams need to win. And if you’re lucky, then good for you.
How many teams have won games from interceptions (ask Ed Reed–how many games has he won for Baltimore by scoring defensive touchdowns?)
Tom Brady–how many first downs has he gotten for his team (by asking for a flag) that have led to TDs? Roethlisberger gets sacked 10 times more than Brady and has way less flags thrown his direction. Is that luck for brady? yes.
How many come from behind wins has Peyton had this year? Is that any different than what Roethlisberger did last year?
And geez, if Baltimore didn’t have a kicker that missed field goals earlier in the season, they would have a few more wins–so the teams that played Baltimore got lucky.
So besides your play by play of the game, you didn’t really make any valid points besides luck wins games–and the teams that are lucky this year (and luck means catching breaks and having talent) are winning games.
And I hate to call you out because you probably love it, but jamaltimore, seriously, I’ve been reading your posts for a while now and I’m hoping you’re in high school because you write like you are. Guys,
The Steelers do not have it this year. Hopefully it will lead to the firing of Arian’s they won last year in spite of him. Also some needed changes on defense. If Tomlin wants to run the 4-3 start the transition now.
The defense is not creating turnovers or making plays when they need to, period!
Ben is great when he improvises outside the pocket, too bad he can’t throw the ball away when he’s dead meat. He must have a completion % clause in his contract.
Everyone on this board who isn’t a black n gold fan is jealous. We have 2 Super Bowls in the last 4 years. Unless you are a Pats fan you can sit down and shut up now!
As far as the divison goes. Cincy had a good year, good luck in the playoffs, I smell a choke job. Has Carson Palmer ever won a playoff game? When’s the last time he passed for over 200 yards. You may be able to run your way to a division title, but defenses in the playoffs will be more like Minnesota’s and we saw how that worked out for ya.
And Raven’s fans, it’s funny you care more about us not making the playoffs then your team possibly getting in. Even without Pola. you guys can barely score on us.
We had a down year, it happens we will be back, hopefully next year. Either way we still got 6, how about your team?

  47. sar14 says: Dec 16, 2009 3:42 PM

JimmySmith…I think you are on to something.
It is true, Dan Rooney no longer runs the show and, if Colbert leaves, the Steelers will have a new owner calling the shots, a new GM and a head coach with a real firm grasp on the obvious. This situation is much worse than a 5 game losing streak!!!
    Good luck Steelers indeed.

and to you Tomlin haters out there….please remember, we DID go 8-8 after Cohwer’s SuperBowl year. i’m a Steeler fan, and i expect perfection just like we all do…but i am a realist as well, and understand teams go through things like this. it’s his third year, and a year he’s coming off a SuperBowl win…cut the guy some frigging slack

  50. Katmanduu says: Dec 16, 2009 3:53 PM

The defense is long in the tooth. Last year, they stayed healthy, for the most part, and many had career seasons. Think about it….in only one game prior to the Super Bowl did they give up more than 300 in total offense for the game. That is amazing. Plus, they shut down Zona for three quarters (and still won the game thanks to one of the best clutch QBs in the world). Their D-Line ages are well over 30, Harrison is over 30, Farrior will be 35, and the secondary is not that strong with Polamalu out and Taylor nearing 30, Carter nearing 34, and Gay just flat out terrible in a full time role.
It happens. Time to reload, which is what the Steelers do. Teams like the Ravens constantly rebuild, and make pitiful excuses when they lose.
But they’re still a better team than the Ravens. I can’t wait for that overrated crap team to go into Pittsburgh thinking that they’re going to win, only to get bitchslapped AGAIN. Then we get to hear Ray Ray and Terell Thuggs whine and cry about something.
    Ah…..somethings will never change.

  51. Nard100 says: Dec 16, 2009 3:56 PM

The Steelers haven’t lost their spirit or their drive, they’ve lost their Polamalu! Stats don’t lie, when that guy is in the game, it’s a different team. Same thing with Bob Sanders and the Colts in the playoffs. No Bob, no SB.

  52. bake says: Dec 16, 2009 3:58 PM

the Pittsburgh problem is the offensive line. it stinks. It stunk last year, but the defense was so dependable they overcame it. This year the defense has some holes, injuries, whatever, and the glaring weakness is glaring. they’ll be alright if they play their cards right and upgrade the o-line this offseason. Switzer/Tomlin might even win another super bowl next year. oops did I say that?

  53. Bubby Brister says: Dec 16, 2009 4:01 PM

Tomlin doesn’t know how to handle adversity?
    Really?
    REALLY?
Are we forgetting last season? You know, when every single game on the toughest schedule of all time was nationally televised at 4 or 8PM? And they had to come back after being down in the 4th quarter in about 7 of those games? Including that little, no biggie of an exhibition game known as the Super Bowl?
Come the hell off of it. The secondary is being exposed as what it really is — ordinary sans Polamalu — the already mediocre offensive line is collapsing without their best (best?) players, and their offensive coordinator draws up their gameplans with Crayolas. The only fault Tomlin is guilty of is letting that moron call the plays, and I’m sure he realizes that if he pulled the plug now (e.g. the Bucs and Bills) things would just go from bad to worse.
Go worship your little Cowher shrines a little harder. That guy sure did know what it took to win championships and everything. If Kevin Colbert didn’t talk him into drafting Ben, and if Ben and Whiz didn’t beg and plead with him to open up the offense in the ’05 playoffs, Tomlin would be up on him 1-0.
It’s a shame to know that whiny ass Steelers fans and flat out ignorant non-Steelers fans make up 99.9% of the population.
They’ll be back. And with the Jags being frauds and the Dolphins and Ravens still on the schedule, I wouldn’t completely rule it out this season.
Wouldn’t that be something if the Steelers upset the division winning Bengals in the first round and had to go to Indy? Just saying.

  54. Pop T says: Dec 16, 2009 4:01 PM

Don’t know if this is true or not but I have not seen the Steelers play so poorly as I have the last 5 games or so. As a Ravens fan I hope both teams improve next year- it is usually a great hard fought game when the two collide. This year not so much.

  55. tk1966 says: Dec 16, 2009 4:07 PM

Some clown earlier here said that Steelers’ fans never stop complaining – I’d bet that same idiot would be calling out the Steelers’ fans if they were quiet and not saying anything.
That being said, Steelers fans are quite spoiled. For most years, the team is truly in the thick of a playoff race. It is rare for them to not be in the hunt or to have already clinched a spot and now be fighting for home-field at this point in the season. Its the rare season like this that reminds us of what most fans of most teams endure on a REGULAR basis. Since Chuck Noll took over, with the exception of his first season, the worst the Steelers have done is 5-11. Once. 6-9 once and 6-10 three times. With one more win this season, the Steelers will have failed to win 7 or more game (in nonstrike shortened seasons) just 6times in the last 40 years! In those same 40 years, the longest consecutive losing streak is 2 years. Steelers fans are spoiled with winning, and can be pretty sure that this is going to be only a short dip, not something prolonged like most teams have to endure on occasion.

Being the DIE HARD Steelers fan that I am, it saddens me to see this team loose thier drive, spirit in 1 season after winning a SB. On the road at that. I feel everytime Ben gets hurt, in trouble or wussies out it cost the whole team. Yes he is a BIG part of the team but there is NO I in team Ben. I feel if he would learn to keep his pants on and his mouth shut they could be putting SB trophies in the case in Pittsburgh for a looong time coming. Best advise Tomlin can give the team is “Hey Ben keep it in your pants and your mouth shut!” Sorry I blame him for a lot of it. Look at the year he had the motorcycle wreck, BUT then the next year was a SB year. So let it go. Heal up Troy (my MAN!!!!) and work w/ the newbies and I hope Dixon gets more playing time and Batch can heal and we can rest up for 2010 season. All good things come to those who wait!!!!!! For all the Steeler haters….that band wagon you are one will one day hit a pothole like we have and then the sh*t will fall on you…..

This isn’t the 1970′s. All the teams have steroids now… not just Pittsburgh.

The exact same thing happened after Cowher (finally) won a Super Bowl. The team tanked the next year and scored a higher draft pick than usual. Big deal, it’s just one year.
Tomlin’s act sure doesn’t come off as well when they’re losing though.

Tomlin won a superbowl with a team that Cowher already had put together. He is a SORRY excuse of a coach. If anyone gets traded, it should be him. Art Rooney do something good… Da da is in Ireland.
Rothlisberger sucks. All I want for Christmas is for someone to trade that bastard! The 3rd string quarterback plays better then little ben.
Polumalu – I bow down to you…. PLEASE come back soon! Keep up the good work Hinds.

Bus, you have NO idea how many fans MISSSSSSSSSSS you!

  62. Reba says: Dec 16, 2009 6:02 PM

GET TOMLIN OUT!!! Give LaBeau all the money in the world to stay another year…he’s in his 70s. ONE MORE YEAR, ONE MORE YEAR, ONE MORE YEAR.
For Rothlisloser…. get out now…. get out now.. You should be VERY afraid of Dixon.

    @ PopT
Just because neither team is playing as good as they were last year, the Steelers obviously playing the poorest out of the two, doesn’t mean that the Steelers / Ravens games aren’t..or won’t be… exciting. I thought our first matchup this year was great. I expect nothing less in the 2nd to be honest.

    JimmySmith says:
They lost their best defensive player, their QB had a rape charge hanging over his head all season and the owner is in Ireland, unable to pay off the refs. What did you think was going to happen this year?
    ____________________________________
EXACTLY. I’ve said it since week one. There’s also the Super Bowl loser curse to factor in though, of course. Anyway, it was bound to happen.
Almost anyone can beat the Steelers, especially with no Polamalu, but their team of refs present a whole different set of challenges. Now that they’re gone, the Steelers have been exposed. Badly.
The already-cake Pack schedule just keeps getting easier. I can’t say I mind.

Reba…you are the ONLY fan who misses the Bus. alot of us here are “real” Steeler fans, not just jumping here to post some asanine comment, and remember how his fat ass almost cost us the ’05 SuperBowl.
i wonder how much he would have to say if he would have went out a LOSER like he almost did? i bet after that goal-line fumble, if Big Ben wouldn’t have saved his fat sorry ass, you wouldn’t even know where jerome bettis is these days. but because this man asked you to come back because he thought your SORRY ASS deserved to go out a winner, and he did just that for you, you think you can be so critical?
YOU almost cost this team a SuperBowl…YOU, fat ass. now you have the NERVE to criticize these guys who have the whole league gunning for them because they are the champs? you should NEVER be allowed in the city of Pittsburgh again. How soon we forget….YOU almost went down in history as a clown. you wouldn’t even have been able to live with yourself after that play.
i have lost ALL respect for you. i know it doesn’t matter, but as far as i’m concerned, you are no longer part of the Steeler family, part of Steeler nation. you will forever be remembered as the loser you are. you owe Big Ben EVERYTHING…HE convinced you to come back another year, and then got you a SuperBowl Ring…HE made the tackle that saved our season after you BLEW IT…wow, you have some nerve. but, i guess since you got a chance to get yours, you feel now you can say whatever you want? YOU ARE A LOSER AND A BUM!!! PLEASE GO AWAY….NBC got rid of you because you were as bad an analyst as you were a player, now i need you to do the same. but to keep your self and you idioacy fresh in peoples minds, you feel the need to trash these guys? instead of that, since you fell you have all the answers, fat ass, how about go to the team during practice and in the locker room before the game, and share some of this “spirit” you say these guys lack. i remember how you seemed to lack “spirit” when your fat ass was on the sideline holding your stupid head down after that goal line fumble. remember that? oh, how a SuperBowl Ring makes us so arrogant, and forget the ass we are. you truly disgust me…
