Ron Wolf the then GM signed Brett and Reggie, not Coach Chin Tuck.
Holmgren is a good head coach and a great QB developer. his attempt to do GM duties in Seattle after Ted Thompson left was not successful. While he comes off subdued in interviews, he has an enormous ego and things have to be his way or he stops putting in the time.

To all the numbnuts who keep spouting off about Holmgren’s mediocre-at-best performance as GM in Seattle and how that means he won’t/can’t do a good job in Cleveland:
Cleveland is NOT offering Holmgren the job of GM. He is offered the job of President of Football Operations- like the job Parcells has in Miami. If Holmgren does get hired by the Browns, he will, in turn, hire a GM.
Will Holmgren be in on decisions the GM would normally make alone? Probably. But he would not be taking on the other 95% of GM duties.
Just thought I’d point that out to the opinionated doofuses who apparently don’t pay real attention to the stories they comment on and keep whining about how Cleveland will be sorry if Holmgren becomes their “GM”?

brewster – bad analogy and math on a number of levels. randy lerner is offering $10m to run improve a division of his $2.0 billion empire (i might be lowballing that number). that salary is NOT a terrible ratio to the his entire net worth.
also – don’t forget browns’ franchise is in the top 15 in value in NFL (people often don’t realize this!!!). right now they’re valued at $1.0 billion by themselves. again $10m salary on a $1.0b business isn’t far off.

Holmgren will bring in a new coach when he takes over, remember who he worked with while he was in Green Bay? John Gruden and Steve Mariucci, I think one of those guys will be offered the job and I think it will be Mariucci who takes it since Gruden does not like cold weather and he has a sweet contract with ESPN.

Hey Brewster: Get over it. It you don’t like it quit reading these sites and quit going to games and quit watching them on TV. Maybe you can keep watching Seinfeld re-runs until you have them memorized instead of watching football games.
Bottom line is not many people in the world will argue that Holmgren would be a great GM (strictly personnel speaking). However, he will find someone that knows personnel and he will find an outstanding head coach. He is a leader.

How disgusting!
Frequently I read on these pages of posters complaining about how overpaid and spoiled NFL athletes are and comparing their (the players) wages to their own.
Try comparing Holmgren’s salary/compensation package to a CEO of a mid-size public or private company.
The Browns did $235 million in revenue in 2008. They’re supposedly offering Holmgren $8-$10 million to be GM or whatever they’re calling him.
To pay someone $10M to manage a $235M business is stupid and obscene.
Until fans rebel and refuse to pay the grotesque prices NFL teams charge for admission, season tickets, parking & refreshments this madness will continue to spiral out of control.

Dawgpound2009 is right about not getting excited until Holmgren signs on the dotted line. Older fans from Tampa still talk about Parcells leading them down this path only to dump them at the last second for the Jets (or was it the Pats? who can keep up?)

It isn’t the fact that Holmgren has to think about it. The job is his, but first Lerner needs to line up some Black and Brown folks for token interviews so he can legally hire Holmgren and that might not happen till after the season is over.

Don’t start trading in your dawgbones for walrus tusks just yet Browns Fans. It ain’t over till the fat man sings “I am coming to Cleveland”. “The Walrus” may be leveraging other teams to see how many million fish he can end up with in his basket.
It will be really interesting if Holmgren does sign on to see how long it takes him to send Mangini scrambling for cardboard boxes and a U-Haul. Maybe the so-called “Man-genius” can hire BQ and DA pack boxes for him since they both will be needing jobs too. Maybe Lerner can show some compassion get Brian Daboll a position as “Brownie” the elf next season! Or better yet, team him up with Mangini (in a Santa outfit) in the front window at Higbees in their christmas display. Tis the season to be jolly …….

I think Mike Holmgren can help the Browns. He brought Brett Favre to Green Bay, and he also got Reggie White to sign with Green Bay. I can remember when the Packers were a losing team, and he definitely changed the attitude on that team, and gave that city hope.
The Browns have not won a championship since 1965. I have been a fan for more than 30 years. But in those 30 years, I can never remember seeing things as bad as they are now. We need to change the way we block, tackle, pass and run. Mike Holmgren will provide the much needed attitude adjustment. He will also bring in the necessary talent, so that we can compete.
