Holmgren doesn't rule out coaching the Browns

Current Browns coach Eric Mangini is unfazed by the prospect that he might soon be working for Mike Holmgren.

We wonder how Mangini feels about the possibility that Holmgren might soon be working “for” Mangini.

During his weekly radio show on KJR in Seattle, Holmgren talked about his possible employment with the Browns.  And Holmgren didn’t rule out coaching the team (via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer).

Holmgren also called the opportunity with the Browns “very appealing,” and he said he’ll respond to owner Randy Lerner “sooner than later” as to whether Holmgren will take the job.

Holmgren also said that “there’s not a lot of layers between [him and Lerner] and it’s very, very appealing from that aspect.”

He also said that he has been contacted by one other NFL team, but not the Seahawks.

If the Seahawks haven’t called yet, we’ve got a feeling that the call from the Seahawks is never coming.

ANYTHING to get Mangina the HELL out of here!! and if Holmgren coaches im pretty sure Brady is gone as well which would be GREAT as well!

If you listen closely enough…strain your hearing and close your eyes so as to heighten your sens of sound…you can hear it.
Yes, that sound you hear is Brady Quinn somersaulting and assaulting his manhood with chimpanzee-like joy!

Holmgren did an outstanding job breathing life into a (at the time) terrible Seattle Seahawk franchise and turning them into a consistent, winning operation…
Having said that… the team has been on a downward spiral for the past few years, a downward spiral that began under his watch. I understand that Tim Ruskell had a lot to do with this, but Holmgren was the HC of the product taking the field… so, I completly understand if the Seahawks are looking to go in another direction.

the ‘Hawks should know him better than anyone, and they don’t seem to want him in that capacity. I would think this might be worth noting.

He can’t screw the Browns up any worse than they already are. He get them to the playoffs n a few, his rep just gets that much bigger, probably HOF material (if not already).

I’d gladly trade Mangini to the Seahawks for a gun and a dog, then use the gun to shoot the dog.

The coaching thing is troublesome; that’s how he got in trouble the last time: coveting Control of the Kingdom.
I just don’t see Holmgren and Mangini as a congenial team. We out here like to think we know these people but, admittedly, we don’t.
If he does go to the Browns, it will be interesting to watch Holmgren, with his combustible temperament, and Mangini, with his (apparent) micromanagement tendencies, attempt to achieve harmony and instill trust and commitment from that ego-bruised squad. They both strike me as my-way-or-the-highway guys. Hope Brady can stay afloat; he does have talent and deserves better than he’s gotten so far.
Curious how Mrs. Holmgren feels about the prospect – Seattle and Cleveland are miles apart in more than just geography.

Firing Mangini after 1 season would be tremendously unfair… almost as unfair as a coach pledging security to his chosen QB only to bench him after 2.5 games

The Walrus and Penguini working together ? I highly doubt it unless they are appearing in a aquatic life show at Seaworld in Aurora, Ohio. I get the feeling Big Mike is going to turn Penguini into fish food and take the reins himself.
Let’s face the facts here people: if Holmgren takes a position with the Browns, Mangini will be out on his ass (where he deservedly belongs).
Holmgren is not stupid. He will coach himself or put his man in as the next HC. Holmgren has absolutely nothing to gain by keeping Eric Mancheesi around

GB3Pack4 says: “Curious how Mrs. Holmgren feels about the prospect – Seattle and Cleveland are miles apart in more than just geography.”
My thoughts exactly. I’m guessing that the Walrus will be retaining his West Coast house and renting a place in Cleveland if he actually takes this job. Wonder if there’s a clause in the Browns offer that lets him fly home mid-week?
Or maybe — just maybe — Holmgren doesn’t really want the Browns job and is using Lerner to leverage a position somewhere more desirable. Nah, what am I thinking? That kind of thing doesn’t go on in the NFL, does it?

You’ve got to ask yourself what kind of guy, goes on a radio show (promotes it all week…), to discuss the possibility of taking a job that someone else is in.
Not saying Mangini doesn’t deserve this… but, sure doesn’t tell me Holmgren is a class act.

    Definitely Dallas.

There is a good reason why no coach has won a SB with 2 different franchises. Actually there many reasons, not the least of which is the dynamics that came together in which he won his SB in the first place.Beware the coach who had a HOF qb [Holmgren and Favre, Shanahan and Elway, Dungy and Manning]. Beware the guy who stepped into a ready made team [Gruden]. Beware the guy who took 14 years before he finally got it done due to some most fortunate calls [Cowher].

That’s a bit tacky, talking about a coaching job while the team still has a coach in place. Mangina is as good as gone, but still, that’s a bush move. The Walrus should apologize.

Ever since I heard Holmgren’s name tossed around for this job, I always thought he’d wear both hats. Can anyone see him hiring Charlie Weis as OC? That could be a good way to help Brady Quinn…

GB3Pack4 and NoHomeTeam, what exactly are you getting at? Holmgren would need to fly back home to the West Coast each week, uh, why exactly? I’m guessing that you both maintain that Seattle/The West Coast is Paradise, and having to spend more time than absolutely necessary in Northeast Ohio is pure unmitigated torture. Both Seattle and Cleveland have nice places and not-so-nice places in which to reside, both are cloudy and gray a lot of the time, it’s 40 degrees here in CLE today, the weather isn’t that bad usually. Of course, Seattle does have Microsoft for Mr. and Mrs. Holmgren to work for when the cursed Browns destroy Mike’s rep for turnaround success, I do grant you that…

    Excellent points by bigrig.
None of those guys was responsible for acquiring those great QBs, but they sure made hay off of someone else doing it for them.

The other team has to be Oakland.

Welcome to the Dawgpound “Mr. Walrus.”
Now….. Fire Mangini, and get to work!

I guess, no coach is going to turn it around in Cleveland. Thats some hard logic. Cleveland had no where near a HOF qb, or coach (sorry Marty)

Well, I won’t speak for GB3Pack4, but you more or less summed it up. I don’t mean to be nasty about it, but I’ve spent time in both Seattle and in Northeast Ohio (as you put it). Do you really mean to tell us that you see no appreciable difference in the quality of life between the two locales? I wouldn’t use the word “torture” to describe Ohio, but from an objective (not resident to either city) point of view, Seattle wins. Better food, better Arts, better weather.

There is NO WAY you fire Mangini after one year. That would send out a horrid message to future prospective coaches vying for jobs. Basically this ” If you do not take a crummy team to the playoffs in one year and make pro bowlers out of some players, your gone”
Cleveland fans need a dose of reality of how you do business and knock off this vigilante justice that seems to be in the forums with one and done.

Hack journalism at its finest. Inferring something that wasn’t said at all. Mary Kay Cabot makes Florio look like Walter Cronkite.
Incidentally, Holmgren coaching is something I will NOT support.

  24. BasicInstinct says: Dec 19, 2009 10:09 AM

honestly, if Bret Favre’s arm hadn’t blown up at the end of last season, Mangini would still be in New York. A Head Coach is joined at the hip of his quarterback’s success.
