Mora wants "dirtbags," hopes that we don't point it out

It’s been a busy couple of days for us, and so I’m still making it through my ongoing list of possible story ideas.  (For security reasons, I write them in Pig Latin.)

A little while ago, I finally had a chance to open the string of e-mails we received late Wednesday regarding a reference that Seahawks coach Jim Mora made to PFT.  And it reminded me that we like Jim Mora a lot, and that we hope his new G.M. feels the same way.

Speaking with the media, Mora explained his belief that offensive linemen need to have a certain type of mentality.

“If you’re gonna be a good offensive lineman, I think you’ve gotta be a little bit of a . . . you gotta have . . . you gotta be . . . can I say it? . . . you gotta be a little bit of a dirtbag,” he said.

“Not as a person, but on the football field.  In the pit, where all that stuff goes down, man if you don’t have some freakin’ toughness, you’re gonna fail.  You’re gonna fail.”

He later explained his choice of the “dirtbag” term, and one of the writers said that it’s a great word.

Smiling, Mora agreed.  “It’s gonna show up on ProFootballTalk in about 30 seconds,” Mora said, to laughter from the room.

It actually took us a little bit longer.  But better late than never.

He’re the full press conference.  The “dirtbag” discussion heats up at about the 13-minute mark.

  1. That is a good term. It was a good term when Joe Bugel came up with it for his linemen a couple years ago.

  2. He should know, having coached Mike Vick. And he’s the idiot that got fired up by sniffing ammonia on the sidelines.

  3. Too late Mora, no copy rights here. Joe Bugel called his offensive linemen the “Dirtbags” 3 years ago, a direct descendant of the “Hogs” in the eighties.
    Originality is dead!!!

  4. I did not like Little Mora Jr. when he was an “assistant” coach with the Saints when his daddy was the coach, I didn’t like him when he was the Falcons coach sniffing poppers of the sidelines, I didn’t like him when he campaigned for the University of Washington job, I didn’t like him when he campaigned for the Seahawks job, but……I am starting to like the guy, just a little. Dirtbags, that is exactly what you want in an offensive lineman, a guy with attitude who will knock guys off the line and do what it takes within the rules to protect his quarterback.
Nice job J.L., but your dad would have said it even better and gotten a beer commercial out of it after he retired.

  5. 5:40 he has some good remarks too. Not really related, but good.
Starting to like the guy after listening to him.

  6. hey mora how about just being good at your job,a skilled lineman doesnt need to be a ass to be good
by the way your a average coach so you better become a dirt bag then you may become a good coach total bullcrap

  7. BUGES!
Also (this shows how much of a nerd I am) doesn’t Bugel look like a cross between Ian McKellen and Gollum

  8. Jim Mora should join Ladainian Tomlinson and Roy Williams on their trip to see the Wizard (of Oz)

  9. Smiling, Mora agreed. “It’s gonna show up on ProFootballTalk in about 30 seconds,” Mora said, to laughter from the room.
Because we all know if there is a site that makes the biggest deal of the smallest thing, a site that makes up for quality with quanity, it’s PFT.

  10. Mangina is the biggest dirtbag in the NFL. do you think their is a soul he wouldn’t deficate on to help himself???

  11. More surprising is the fact you like Mora. Is it because he references your site or talks to you?
It surely can’t be because of his coaching abilities.
And putting in a waiver claim might not have done much good – the Bills have a higher priority on the waiver wire anyway. (both teams have same record, but Bills have worse conference record).

why do you read the site then? noticed that you took the time to read the article and then comment on it. if that is how it is, why do you lend any credibility by actually posting a comment. your a douche that is why.

  13. Florio, you just gonna sit back and take that? Mora disses you and PFT like that. You just gonna take that stuff?
    Dirtbag. Mora. Dirty mouth.
    Hey, you talking to me…
That guy’s laughing at us. And you’re just gonna report it like nothin’ happened.
