Porter weighs in on Johnson-Ginn race

Will Titans running back Chris Johnson and Dolphins wide receiver Ted Ginn meet on the track to determine who’s really the NFL’s fastest man?

We don’t know. But Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter is doing his best to egg them on.

After Johnson said Ginn didn’t show for a race, Porter piped up and said he’s anxious to see it happen.

Hopefully we get to see the race,” Porter said, per USA Today, “because it’s something I want to see to put it all behind us and see who really is the fastest.”

Although Johnson ran a ridiculously fast 4.24-second 40-yard dash at the 2008 Scouting Combine, Porter indicated that he’s picking his teammate.

“I’m not setting up the race to bet on Chris Johnson,” Porter said. “I mean he’s fast. True enough, he is fast. I’m not going to take that away from him. But we won’t say he’s the fastest person in the league until he races somebody.”

One man’s opinion: The NFL should set this race up at the Pro Bowl.

Two words that can clear things up and provide the answer to the “fastest man” question-Desean Jackson!

  2. READY2CRUSH says: Dec 18, 2009 7:49 AM

Why the hell would Ginn be anywhere near the Pro Bowl? As soon as the season ends, he’ll be out of Miami faster than he usually jumps out of bounds

“…But we won’t say he’s the fastest person in the league until he races somebody.”
I see him race people every week. I see him vs 11 other players, and he wins that race every time.

Doing it at the pro bowl is not a bad idea. Johnson will already be there for the game and Ginn… well, he can show up for this particular event.

Joey – I’m sure I speak for a lot of Dol-Phans….Shut the hell up!! Nobody gives a SH!T about this. Your team needs to play nearly perfect to make the playoffs and your concerned over this??? Do you realize that any long runs CJ gets this weekend will most likely be because you are 5 yds out of position again? …If we lose this weekend it should be the last time we see you in a Dolphin uniform. Time to give some of the younger players who care about the team a chance to play.

  6. d-phinfan says: Dec 18, 2009 8:06 AM

Hey Joey – What’s next? …I heard CJ said that his dad could beat up your dad…Grow up and do your damn job.

Shouldn’t these guys be concentrating on football games?

  8. downwithdansnyder says: Dec 18, 2009 8:13 AM

UMMM, they used to have this race and Darrell Green won it every year he entered (if my crumbling memory serves me right, but maybe not). It was a big deal and at some point they just stopped doing it.

  9. Otis Taylor 89 says: Dec 18, 2009 8:13 AM

There is a guy in Philly that seems to be pretty fast too…

didn’t they used to have a fastest man in the NFL competition?? Darrell Green won a few didn’t he?

That’s the only way Ginn will make it to the Pro Bowl.

Quoting AD: This is for kindergarteners. Surely the NFL and the Commish himself will set up such a joke.
Maybe put some other players on the back of a truck and let them drive in parallel?

It would only be fair, if they allowed the Cowboys kicker David Buehler to particpate.

If you keep this shit up, the Booyah Network is going to get involved somehow. By the time they’re done, a race will be held at halftime of the Super Bowl and the winner will be proclaimed “the fastest human being of all time.”

  21. Crowder911 says: Dec 18, 2009 8:50 AM

ummm no disrespect to CJ he got crazy first steps BUT he got no burner.
Ginn got a slow first steps but ask the Jets about his closing speed…

  22. Drat says: Dec 18, 2009 8:53 AM

MDS, the word is “eager” not “anxious.” Eager. Eager. How can professional writers be such dorks? This case is like “literally”– seemingly nobody in sports journalism has a clue what it means. If Merriman threatened me, I would be anxious, not eager. Literally.

  25. GTisMe says: Dec 18, 2009 9:08 AM

Yamon Figurs is the fastest man in the NFL and used to regularly beat CJ on the track. He’s also the worst football player of all the names mentioned above, but he’d beat any of them in a foot race.

  26. virtualplague says: Dec 18, 2009 9:08 AM

Does it matter? Chris Johnson is the best offensive player in football at the moment. Ted Ginn is (should be) a 3rd receiver at best.

  28. Mikebrown_suckit says: Dec 18, 2009 9:29 AM

Yep Crowder CJ got no burner. When most of his runs come with no one behind him and he still out runs them and Ginn has most of his with no one infront of him. Ask the rest of the NFL about CJ’s closing speed breakin off another 50+ yard td run. I think Desean should be in it too. Ginn is a hell of a return man, but my money is on CJ or Desean. Oh yeah and joey is just mad no more horses around for his dogs to kill. Levi Jones says hi.

You didn’t even mention the part of the article that says Ginn wasn’t a no show….

    2 words..…Percy harvin

  31. NASHDOG says: Dec 18, 2009 10:01 AM

My bet is Florio could beat either one of ‘em in the 40 if he had Porter chasing his ass…..

  32. Gweez says: Dec 18, 2009 10:13 AM

Daryll Green could probably still beat all these fools. Fastest man i’ve ever seen IN a football uniform. Not just off the field. ON the field boys. The rest of these fools are just pretenders.

  33. surefooted says: Dec 18, 2009 10:14 AM

How could they have a “fastest man” race without Desean Jackson and Percy Harvin?

  34. Chappy says: Dec 18, 2009 10:15 AM

I don’t think they will let Ginn into the probowl (ever) even if it were just for a foot race.

2 Words … Andy Reid (while chasing a donut)

  36. GO_EAGLEZ says: Dec 18, 2009 10:27 AM

Andy reid would outrun russell anyday
And i think desean and johnson are the two fastest. Period not ginn or hester, they would get embarrassed. They should also race with pads and then without.

  37. dgreenfi says: Dec 18, 2009 10:29 AM

What about Darius Heyward-Bay? Isn’t he pretty fast? Not sure if he is in the NFL anymore or not though.

Didn’t they used to have leagues “fastest man” races during Pro-Bowl festivities?
Remember seeing something before resembling that but it was awhile ago, know it wasn’t the combine, it was veteran players.
They add something like this I might actually watch the Pro-Bowl.
Fastest players. 40 yd, 100 yd
Strongest players – limit to bench press reps or a Strongman style competition where they throw logs and turn tires.
    Could add a few more.
Tape the day before and show for a pre-game segment or halftime.

  41. etronsman says: Dec 18, 2009 10:55 AM

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the possibility of a hammy beging pulled?
If it’s 40 yards I take Johnson, if it’s 100 I take Ginn. He was an amazing track athlete.

Well I don’t blame PFT planet for not knowing this, as even most Dolphin fans don’t, but Ted Ginn actually LEADS the AFC in kick return average, and return TDs.
Josh Cribbs, who in my opinion is a far better returner, actually has lower stats this year.
    Kick Return Average:
Ted Ginn Jr: 28.0 YPR, 2 TDs, 102 yard long
Josh Cribbs: 25.7 YPR, 1 TD, 98 yard long
I’ll go out on a limb and predict that Cribbs makes the probowl over Ginn anyway. Why? Because Ginn will be largely judged on his crappy WR play, and not his returns which he should be judged on.
Back to the “competition”…… I think they should do this at the probowl, and I also agree they should bring back the NFL Fastest Man competition. That was great to watch (as was the QB challenge). Darrell Green was the man! He was still running with the younger guys when he was in his 40′s…. amazing!
