Another team enters the Shanahan chase

With the Redskins trying to reel in Mike Shanahan, we’re told that another team has commenced the pursuit of the free-agent coach.

The identity of the team currently isn’t known, but it’s our understanding that the team in question is battling for a playoff berth, and that the team is concerned that, if the team waits until its season ends, it will be too late to make a serious play for Shanahan.

Two playoff contenders that immediately come to mind are the Texans and the Cowboys.  The rumor mill has linked Shanahan to both teams.

Would Shanahan be able to put up with Jerry Jones and his meddling ways ?

  7. milehiclown says: Dec 19, 2009 4:48 PM

The Bolts. No Question. Norv blows. Shanny excels with top-notch QBs.
    The Bolts.

Rumor has it….. It’s the local HS team from Butte,Montana…..Go to for updates….

Cowboys would LOVE to have him. First official move will be to get rid of Jason Garrett!!!!!!!!!

Cowboys need to get a QB…

  11. CJCrazyLegs28 says: Dec 19, 2009 4:49 PM

Since when are the Texans a playoff contender? They need every team in front of them to finish 8-8 to make it.

  12. rjgreen3 says: Dec 19, 2009 4:54 PM

i am with you on that….. been saying for years that Romo sucks! Boys will draft QB in draft!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is Mike Shanahan we’re talking about, right? Not Vince Lombardi. Not Bill Walsh.

  14. Scoop says: Dec 19, 2009 5:01 PM

You’d hope that Shanahan hasn’t become underhanded enough to negotiate for Kubes’ job. I mean, the Broncos pretty much went in the tank when he departed…especially Jake Plummer.
But I guess if you’d do it to Jim Zorn, doing it to a guy that had your six for years isn’t much of an escalation. Its a crappy thing to do any way you slice it.
I honestly believed Shanahan had more class than this, especially since he can probably cherry pick any job he wants without lame-ducking another man.

  15. KingKunal says: Dec 19, 2009 5:02 PM

    The Jaguars?

  16. Desides says: Dec 19, 2009 5:03 PM

Shanahan to Houston makes ZERO sense. Kubiak is Shanahan Lite, and they haven’t won with him.

  17. milehiclown says: Dec 19, 2009 5:04 PM

Just asking: why? How is Shanny so desirable? He won a SINGLE game in the post-season after Elway bailed. Won the AFC West ONCE after Elway retired.

  18. Favre On HGH says: Dec 19, 2009 5:07 PM

I give you two guesses and tell you its not the Texans.
Shanny will be able to get the most out of Romo and Phillips can run the defense.

  19. SlimPickens says: Dec 19, 2009 5:17 PM

depends on how former OC of Shanny, Gary Kubiak, liked working there. i would imagine its a better job than Washington. I’d take Shaub, AJ and Owen Daniels over anything the Foreskins have on Offense

  20. Mean D says: Dec 19, 2009 5:19 PM

Probably Cowgirls but not sure if Shanahan could take being Mr. Facelift’s puppet.

  21. PolegoJim says: Dec 19, 2009 5:23 PM

And whoever hires him…decent guy that he is… will pay through the nose, tofind out what Pat Bowlen finally realized.
The game has passed him by or at least he’s lost his predators teeth and is trying to gum his opponents to death.
Outside of running backs and O line, his recruiting is mediocre at best. Nothing, zero, nada, zip in building a championship defense.

  22. packerfanfornot4life says: Dec 19, 2009 5:24 PM

could Shanny and Jones get along??? I see Shanny wanting final roster choices being his and Jones is a meddling owner

So the retreads are back, huh? Fassell should dust off his resume.

  25. ma39 says: Dec 19, 2009 5:32 PM

Based on the way Dallas FO is set up I doubt Shanny takes the Dallas job. Jerry would never give the kind of control Shanahan is looking for. Jerry is just too power hungry to do it and Shanny will end up doing what Parcells did by leaving them because Jerry went over his head to snag TO when Parcells didn’t want him. He also fired Jimmy Johnson after he won two SB’s for him because Jerry wasn’t getting much of the credit. I remember Deion Sanders saying Jerry did this underhanded move by getting arena league football team right when Sanders was already to set one up. If I were Shanahan I would not even talk to Dallas. What coach that works for him wants him on the sideline when their down by a few points. Even so, I doubt Jerry could outbid us because he has that 1 billion dollar staduim to pay for.

  26. redsquare says: Dec 19, 2009 5:34 PM

I’m not so sure about the idea that Shanahan would have to be Jones’s “puppet”. With an average coach in prior years, sure. But don’t you think that Jones is tired of losing every year? The spotlight is moving away from him, and the big new stadium didn’t help much.
At this point, I bet Jones is ready for Jimmy Johnson Part II. Winning is the only thing left that isn’t going to Jones’s plan. And Shanahan would be a good fit for that role.

  27. Quagmire says: Dec 19, 2009 5:39 PM

    Sounds like a Dallas man.

I hope its the Texans. They are a good football team but just need to sure some things up. Got a good QB, great WR, young defense. Need a stud RB and some more linemen

  31. NoKoolaidCowboy says: Dec 19, 2009 6:01 PM

If he comes to the Cowboys, I really hope that Jerry can put his ego aside and let the man coach.
Shanahan will bring some common sense that has been lacking for some time now. His first order of business has to be evaluating the coaching staff and send those packing that can’t cut it.
Note to Garrett: Dust off the old resume and lower your expectations.
Note to Team: No more Camp Cupcake.

Raiders win SB, Tom Cable coach of the year.

  33. thunderdog says: Dec 19, 2009 6:10 PM

Sorry, but Shanny is all but signed by the Redskins. Allen is his guy, a GM who will get the players that he wants. He’s not about to go to Dallas to have another TO shoved down his throat as Jerruh did to Parcells.

I think Raiders fans should be barred from commenting about any other NFL team.Maybe have some app that would destroy their hard drive as well as shock them to the point of an overnight hospital stay. The silly things would still post tho, like a moth to a bug zapper.
An Bearfan 54, that sounds crazy.

  43. Hail2ThaRedskins says: Dec 19, 2009 7:20 PM

Aren’t Kubiak and Shanahan close? If that is true I doubt Shanahan would enteratin the Texans right now. I believe it could very well be the Cowboys considering Philips has been a lame-duck coach basically since he arrived. That said, I doubt the Cowboys have much of shot considering that I can imagine Shanahan put with Jones’ involvement.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is Mike Shanahan we’re talking about, right? Not Vince Lombardi. Not Bill Walsh. ”
That tells you how desperate teams are and how BAD football has become in general. Half the teams are unwatchable, NOT JUST THE RAIDERS, either. You really have to blame guys coming out early, too much money, too much expectation and too much impatience by owners.

Yeah, so did the idea of them upsetting the Steelers. Stranger things have happened.

  47. getsomeclass says: Dec 20, 2009 9:15 AM

I just love some of the comments about Shanahan’s winning percentage post Elway or the Broncos team record over the last three years.
Although much improved this year, the Broncos have struggled on defense for several years now. That’s no mystery. Winning teams need balance on both sides of the ball and Denver has been coming up short on the defensive side of the ball in recent years.
However, Shanahan is an offensive guy. During Shanahan’s 14 year tenure in Denver, his offense has ranked in the top five for 9 of 14 years. That’s impressive.
Dallas has an average-to-good defense and the Redskins have a very good defense. Couple a solid defense with Shanahans potent offense, ranked #2 in 2008, and there’s no reason to believe either team could dominate in upcoming years.
I believe many teams and fans around the league would be pretty happy to get Shanahan. I would. For the record, I believe he lands in Washington. Redskin fans will be thrilled to get him and I further believe he makes a difference for that city and their fans.
