First half ends with bizarre play from Redskins

Maybe the Redskins really are tanking it.

With the home team in Monday night’s game trailing by 24 points and preparing to try a 38-yard field goal to end the half, coach Jim Zorn unfurled one of the most poorly-conceived gadget plays we’ve ever seen.

After the players were aligned for the attempt, all Redskins players except holder Hunter Smith, the long snapper, and a flanker to the right of the snapper broke from placekick formation and lined up at the far left sideline in a bunch.

Five Giants reacted by going over to the sideline across from the cluster (and “cluster” is a very appropriate word in this context) of Redskins.  Three Giants remained on the line of scrimmage, with two lined up as linebackers and a defensive back ready to cover the flanker.

Smith then sent kicker Graham Gano into motion, and Smith called for the snap.  The three defensive lineman rushed directly at Smith as he took a couple steps to his right.

He then chucked the ball to the left side of the field as he was being flattened, and the ball bounced off a trio of Giants who had jumped to catch it.  It landed in the hands of Giants defensive back Bruce Johnson, who broke left and began to work his way toward the far end zone.

“What in the wide world was that?” ESPN’s Mike Tirico astutely observed just after Johnson made the pick.

The Redskins made one smart move on the play.  They pulled enough of the guys who had started on the left sideline all the way over to the right side of the field, where Johnson was tackled at the Washington 46.

But the ‘Skins were lucky that a flag wasn’t thrown on Kedric Gholston, who drove Johnson hard into the ground after Johnson clearly was out of bounds.  A 15-yard penalty would have moved the ball to the Washington 31 for an untimed down — which could have resulted in a 48-yard field goal to start intermission and an even more insurmountable 27-point deficit.

FYI – Zorn doesn’t call plays anymore. Might have come down from the owner though.

I think we will see the Skins punt on 2n’d down before this game is over.

Garo Yepremian would have been proud of that pass !
Geez, weren’t the Redskins once a proud franchise ??? This is like watching a bad movie.

I hope that show that somewhere as a replay. I’m sorry I missed it. It sounds ridiculous. I wonder if it is even legal.

  7. boysroll says: Dec 21, 2009 10:39 PM

this is emabarassing..I feel for the skins fans…worst performance all year for any team on a nationally televised game. I think the bottom 3 teams could smoke them tonight the way they r playing….0-5 in nfc east again…….lmfao

I’ve seen some teams look like high school teams before, but that was absolutely pathetic. If I played on that team, and the coach wanted to do some crazy stuff like that, I’d be disgusted. Totally high school play right there.

  12. BradyGazelle says: Dec 21, 2009 10:44 PM

I thought it was brilliant for the Redskins to add some comic relief to the festivities.

  13. hayward giablommi says: Dec 21, 2009 10:44 PM

Hmmm. Sounds like this game has gone from unwatchable blowout to debacle to train wreck.
Might be worth tuning in for a minute or two after all to see what the hullabaloo is about .

  24. hayward giablommi says: Dec 21, 2009 11:07 PM

Despite the Redskins 4 wins (3 of came against the Raiduhs, Rams and Bucs), I think a strong case could be made that the ‘skins are the worst team in the league.
No, there’s no way anyone could have thought this was a playoff caliber team before the season. Super Bowl maybe, but not playoff.

The ‘skins scored a TD with that play earlier this year against the Broncos… so there was at least some evidence that it might work.
And it was the same way… shift goofy… Broncos call timeout… do the same thing out of the timeout.
    TD Smith to Sellers…

  29. boysroll says: Dec 21, 2009 11:19 PM

weasel boy should drop the ax as a HS team could beat the 4skins tonight…cant wait for the second beating when my boys come in to town next week for rd 2…..i predict 55-0 the way they r playing…….

Ever see the movie Brewster’s Millions? It’s a story about a guy that has to waste a small fortune in a short amount of time by making foolish business decisions.
That movie as loosly based on Daniel Snyder and the Washington Redskins.

  31. hayward giablommi says: Dec 21, 2009 11:26 PM

    Where is the “Oooooooooh-my-god–how-classless-they’re-throwing-the-football-when-they-already-have-45-points” crowd?
Or does that only become an issue when it’s the ‘arrogant’ Patriots who have a big lead and are rounding out 60 minutes against paid professionals?
Let’s hear from you, whiny bitches.

  32. DocBG says: Dec 21, 2009 11:32 PM

its nice to see a little variety in playcalling, gadgets are incredibly fun to watch, especially when pulled off correctly. The question is why in the hell not pass to a reciever who is behind the cluster? at least then you put 7 blockers plus 1 reciever vs maybe 7 defenders, some of which are secondary guys vs. linemen, could have worked just fine.
the thing with gadgets is that when they fail, they can fail REALLY big. think about that option pass in houston.

What you left out is that they lined up with this trick play and the Giants called a timeout. They STILL decided to run the play.
Zorn should have been fired at halftime.

Hey dumbshit, first off learn how to be grammatically correct before you call anyone else a “thug ass.”
Secondly, jacobs squared off and punched TWO redskin players, after trying to rip hall’s helmet off, THEN haynesworth came in and put that bitch in his place before getting flagged.
On the other hand, considering your moniker(I know you’ll have to look that one up) you should be pretty familiar with chumps and losers so good for you.

  37. Bog Saget says: Dec 21, 2009 11:48 PM

Zorn obviously was aware that his punter, Hunter Smith, was an all state quarterback in high school. Too bad that the design allowed for zero blockers for the legendary Hunter Smith.

  44. Mean D says: Dec 22, 2009 12:50 AM

Very similar to the Lonesome Polecat. Ran it with my high school team and it went 67 yards for a TD. Of course, it was only high school.

  45. iHurtMyNose says: Dec 22, 2009 1:01 AM

I won my fantasy game to put me into the championship by 1.6 pts….that lawrence tynes 48 yarder would have lost me the week and the chance at a couple bills. im glad they havent decided to review every play in the game yet.

  46. Cushing Will Kill You says: Dec 22, 2009 1:22 AM

If you look closely, you can see a Playstation controller in Zorn’s right hand.

  47. pdxbolt4life says: Dec 22, 2009 1:48 AM

How can all you knuckleheads not know that Zorn hasn’t called plays for this team in two months?? The playcalling goes thru a diagram similiar to the ridiculous punt…field goal…onside kick…WTF was that play anyway?!?!

  48. redsquare says: Dec 22, 2009 2:05 AM

@hayward – not sure, but with the Giants straining mightily for maybe the last playoff spot, they could be doing all they can to address a couple tiebreaking criteria:
    1) Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division – Sure, they were ahead big-time, but they wanted to put the Redskins down for sure.
    2) Best net points in common games/Best net points in all games/Best net touchdowns in all games – It probably won’t come down to those criteria, but if it does, the Giants just put several more touchdowns in the bank for this tiebreaker.
So, early in the season, this might have been overkill. Late in the season with the playoffs on the line: taking care of business.

  49. pdxbolt4life says: Dec 22, 2009 2:14 AM

@boysroll…Speaking of fatasses…what the hell was Flozell doing to poor Barber after that td?? Pissed off that he ate the last snickerdoodle on the sideline?? Or just happy he got in the endzone since the Chargers stuffed him FOUR times from inside five the previous week??

  50. troll_aikman8 says: Dec 22, 2009 2:16 AM

I hate both teams with passion but I couldn’t help but think it was pretty cheap of coach Coffin to continue to throw the ball in that lopsided game and for the ballboy who is their acting DC to continue to send 8 men every play just for building stats in an away game.

  51. Dealer says: Dec 22, 2009 2:27 AM

    Hayward,
One of the tiebreakers for the playoffs is Points for / against – maybe even points for / against within the division. So the Giants need all the points they can get with the Cowboys and Eagles so close in the standings.
Why were the Patriots running up the score on the Redskins or Dolphins on their way to 16-0? Ask Tom, Randy, and Bill.

  52. Adam says: Dec 22, 2009 3:24 AM

As a Giants fan and a big fan of Jacobs, that was very embarassing. I was shocked he and Haynesworth weren’t ejected. Especially Haynesworth, with his history of stomping people’s heads. Plus, Jacobs has pulled dumb shit like this, getting in a boxing stance, several times this season. It’s starting to make the team look bad.
Seems like Bradshaw’s becoming the #1 back because he fits Eli’s newer play style with the “wrinkles” and screens and stuff. Whatever. Two heads are better than 1.

Please God, NO. Stay the hell away from Cleveland. The last thing the Browns need at this point is a do-nothing, meely-mouthed, wuss-puss of a coach.

See what happens when the Redskins lose Vinny Cerrato’s inspired leadership? I predict he will be back by Danny’s side after a year away.

  57. theTRUTHwillSETuFREE says: Dec 22, 2009 8:41 AM

What a pathetic display by a football team. That was embarrassing to watch, yet for some reason I could not turn the game off.
I would love to hear from that dumb-ass WashingtonRedstorms right now. The guys been all over all the Raiders Posts saying how bad we suck, yet I cant remember the last time I’ve seen an entire team quit like that. Defiantly not gonna happen in the town.

  58. bake says: Dec 22, 2009 9:47 AM

I cannot believe I am not the Redskins head coach. It is so obvious to me what the right decisions are, like putting 3 points up, and kicking the extra point in the 3rd, yet this staff is CLUELESS. I have never been so embarrased to be a fan of this team.
Yet they are paid millions for this. And then, after making calls like that, they can’t figure out why morale isn’t high. Can’t figure out why Portis pretends to have lingering concussion symptoms, rather than risk injury playing for this guy. Unbelievable a complete JOKE. Rich Kotite could do better than this. All the players should have immediately walked out and refused to run the play. Sometimes the kids gotta let Dad know when he’s too drunk.

  61. holymackeral says: Dec 22, 2009 10:47 AM

It’s the Jim Zorn comedy show!!!
I’m pretty sure you could sub in Will Ferrell for Zorn and the Skins would be equally good (or bad).

  62. markerdown says: Dec 22, 2009 1:49 PM

I’m a NYG fan, but come on, they beat the redskins, and that team has tons of issues. They can’t help themselves.
So any chest thumping should be minimal. Lets face it, the big test BIG BLUE is against a team with a winning record. That’s when all the NYG issues will be exposed.
The D line isn’t what it was when they won the superbowl, the secondary gets burned frequently, the O line is dinged up and with the
    running game is missing Ward.
Start blitzing and hitting Eli and he’ll get the deer in the headlight look and it’s a three and out game. Once they get behind, game over.
    Just my .02…………:-)

  63. RaiderChile says: Dec 22, 2009 6:51 PM
