Job chatter starts regarding Haley in Kansas City

Let’s start the post this way: It would be shocking if Chiefs coach Todd Haley had to worry about his job status after this season.

Considering the epic rebuilding job Haley undertook when chosen as Scott Pioli’s first coach, Haley deserves patience.  But the issue of his job security has been raised by more than one writer at  what is essentially the only paper in Kansas City.

Columnist Jason Whitlock, who hasn’t been impressed with the Pioli regime for a while, is searching for reasons for Haley to stick around.  Loyalty and fairness top his list, but that’s about it.

In the hours after Kansas City’s latest home loss, beat writer Kent Babb wrote on Twitter that Haley should/will stay, presumably answering an angry mob.  Babb believes Haley deserves next season to prove his mettle.

Chiefs safety Jon McGraw said it was “probably for the best” the Browns loss was blacked out locally for the first time in nearly two decades.  The Hunt family has to be worried that this will become a trend.

We’re surprised to hear Haley’s job security broached as a topic, but that’s how bad the Chiefs have looked of late.  They are getting worse, losing consecutive home games to the Bills and Browns.  They have been outscored 144-71 the last four weeks.

Haley seems safe, but a miserable end to the season like this augurs change. It wouldn’t be a shock if Haley has two new coordinators next season.

The man seems very unenthusiastic at every press conference. Can’t imagine that he motivates anyone in that locker room to play to the best of their abilities. No one expected the Chiefs to be any good this year, but the fans did expect to see some improvement instead of a gradual decline.
Pioli needs to give Belichick a call and ask him what needs to be done to clean up this disgrace of a team. Take that whatever way you want to.

Just because Whitlock writes something does not mean “Haley’s job security” was broached as a topic.
You’re surprised to hear it because fat ass is the only person talking about it.
Here’s a news flash, Whitlock writes what ever he can to get people to react to his crap. It looks better for him if people respond to his articles, then it looks like people have read them and he’s this widely talented writer. When most people just read the topic and first paragraph and then throw it away or respond on the website how stupid he is.
Whitlock is probably just wanting Haley out to being championing Lovie Smith.

It is funny, because i havent been impressed with Whitlocks writing as of late, he is a hack. I am searching for reasons why he is a revelant voice on sports.

Hmm so this guy leads the league in kickoff returns huh?? Lets kick it to him
So he just returned that kickoff for a touchdown huh? lets kick it to him… AGAIN!
    Great coaching….

  5. Outsyder says: Dec 21, 2009 1:42 PM

He needs time. They are converting personnel from a 4-3 to 3-4 and the offensive line has lost 2 potential Hall of Fame linemen in the past few seasons.
Teams start with the lines and both are in flux. He’ll need at least 2 years to rebuild those, especially at the DT/DE/NT positions as those types of players generally take 2 to 3 seasons to develop.
Not giving him at least 3 seasons (unless next year is another monumental failure) would be folly.

  6. KC_Vols says: Dec 21, 2009 1:43 PM

Whitlock is still lobbying for the Chiefs to sign Jeff George. He even wrote an article that George can still ball.

  7. dasboat says: Dec 21, 2009 1:43 PM

You could substitute “Raheem Morris” for “Todd Haley” in this argument and it holds up very well.

  8. mooremi9 says: Dec 21, 2009 1:43 PM

It doesnt matter what coach you put in there. A shitty team is a shitty team and the only way to fix it is to get better players. Look at Belichick when he coached the Browns, he was Poo Poo 36–44.

  9. SteveC says: Dec 21, 2009 1:45 PM

Let’s not write this Piloi guy as a great GM just yet..let’s be real I mean Matt Cassel pretty much robbed them blind, Then you trade your second round pick last year for Cassell and aging Vrabel, and on top of that draft Tyson Jackson in the 1st round who is severly over rated…
Chiefs fans answer me this, how is that LSU defensive line doing for ya?

  10. redsquare says: Dec 21, 2009 1:45 PM

This guy needs to quit calling field goals when his team is behind by touchdowns. It happens the same way every week–they play as though they’re going to get a touchdown later, and they keep coming up short. For all the shouting he does, I don’t see the appropriate amount of guts reflected in his approach to winning games.

  11. Zinn says: Dec 21, 2009 1:47 PM

People have no patience. Edwards took over one of the worst teams in the NFL. Certainly the worst defense. When they lost their QB and 2 hall of fame OL their offense became the worst in the NFL. The plan was to rebuild the Chiefs from the ground up and make them competitive by 2009. 2007′s unexpected playoff year probably did more harm than good raising expectations.
Yes the changeover to Pioli/Haley probably did not help and slowed development and progress. A player like Dorsey loses value as his skills do not fit the new system. Trading Gonzalez hurt but was understandable. But the Chiefs do have some young talent and they were a disciplined hard working team at least under Edwards.
Cassel might be good with a decent line and I also like Croyle if he ever can get healthy. But they need to build on their offensive and defensive lines to give them a chance. A couple of good lineman could make a big difference next year. Although I would be much more confident with Edwards as HC I do not think Haley has done a poor job.

  12. 1stngoal says: Dec 21, 2009 1:57 PM

I don’t think this guy is H.C. material, he’s kinda like Scott Linehan, good coordinator, but head coach…ehhh not so much.
With all the blue chip candidates available this off-season I think it would be smart for K.C. to cut bait and try reeling in one of the big fish. In fact, lets start a rumor: Why not Bill Cowher in K.C.? After all he was an assistant there under Schottenheimer before he went to Pittsburgh wasn’t he?

  13. urbusted says: Dec 21, 2009 1:58 PM

I was surprised at how porous the Chiefs defense and special teams were. They had nine guys up on the line and could not begin to stop the run. The Browns had no reason to pass at all. When the Chiefs scored to tie the game with 2 minutes and some change, I knew they were going to lose because they left the Browns with too much time. That’s how easy the Browns were running the ball. As a matter of fact if anything the browns didn’t use enough of the clock. It was two poor teams putting on an entertaining game. I do Believe Cleveland is ahead of where the Chiefs area at this point.

  14. Citizen Strange says: Dec 21, 2009 2:02 PM

Is everybody in the universe completely unaware that the total extent of Pioli’s GM credentials is accidentally drafting Tom Brady in the sixth round?
If he would have traded all of the Patriots picks to move up and draft Brady number one overall (like the Saints did to get Ricky Williams) it would give an indication that he had at least a clue as to what he was doing.
Pioli got lucky with one accidental sixth round pick and along with Belichick, Weiss, Crennel, Mangini and any and all of the other Patriots “genius” failed ne’er-do-wells has based an entire career on it.

OK…..now I get it………Haley deserves patience but Mangini doesn’t? Dude what a hypocrite.
Mangini’s rebuild was alot tougher than Haley’s

  16. kcdan says: Dec 21, 2009 2:09 PM

They need alot of help. Dorsey has been terrible and I thought Jackson would have improved more. I have been a season ticket holder for years and this team is at rock bottom right now. I knew they were bad,but giving up 286 yards to Clevelands back is not going to cut it. Thats over 800 yards of rushing in 3 weeks. Haley hand picked the D coordinator, but they simply just have know talent on the Dline or at LB with the exception of Hali.

  17. FireJerryJones says: Dec 21, 2009 2:13 PM

Wow. People claiming he is unenthusiastic. Ever seen Belichick’s press conferences? Guaranteed, he is more enthusiastic.
WHo cares? When you take over a roster, cut 22 players, and only 2 of them find work elsewhere in the NFL… you know you had an uphill climb.
This is a five year project and any writer looking for results in year 1 is a damn fool.

  18. Gregg Rosenthal says: Dec 21, 2009 2:17 PM

    @dasboatL funny.
As for his enthusiasm … i think he’s an emotional guy and clearly this season has taken a toll.

  19. KC_Vols says: Dec 21, 2009 2:22 PM

Agree with 1standgoal…this guy just isn’t a HC.
Exact quote from Haley……”I can take 22 guys off the street and win 2 games”
That is about all he can do. And Cassell sucks too.

  20. rodstiffington says: Dec 21, 2009 2:23 PM

    I love it!
Yes, Kansas City was Super Bowl bound this year and it’s all Haley’s fault that they aren’t going!
Maybe… just maybe… someone will call out Fat-cocks for what he is?
[Racist for anyone who can't tell]

New coordinators, huh? May I suggest Wade Phillips as candidate for defensive coordinator. Say what you will about him as a head coach, but he’s a fine defensive coordinator. He’s a master of that 3-4 defense, which they currently have installed now. I think Wade Phillips would a wise hire when Jerry Jones cuts him loose.

  22. matthoover says: Dec 21, 2009 2:49 PM

Haley has done a decent job reversing the damage caused by Herm Edwards & Carl Peterson. When your best offensive talent going into the season is Matt Cassel, Dwayne Bowe, and a washed up Larry Johnson, you know you’re going to have issues. The offensive line is atrocious thanks to terrible drafting. They’ve gelled decently in the last few weeks but still need an overhaul up the middle, as they do on defense. This team will have a new NT, ILB’s, and S’s next year, along with a new LG, C, RG. A high 1st & 2nd round pick, along with Atlanta’s 2nd, will go a long way, as will the loads of cap room they’ve got (if it matters).
If they can fix the interiors on both sides of the ball and find some players who can catch a football, they’ll win their division. Charles is a poor man’s Chris Johnson. Bowe & Chambers are playmakers. Cassel is pretty damn efficient when people catch the ball – if his receivers hadn’t dropped 50 passes this year, his completion percentage would be above 63%. He’s been sacked 40+ times. Fix those two things, and he’ll be a Pro Bowler.
The defense is horrible. Clancy Pendergast was a stopgap. There was no one else out there and Romeo Crennel turned the job down first. The coaching staff needs an overhaul, starting with the DC & DL coach. The perimeter of the defense is good but will get better with Jackson/Dorsey, Hali/Vrabel/Studebaker, and Carr/Flowers.
    Give it one more offseason.

    Whitlock is 100% correct.
Equal parts Greta Garbo & the Wizard of Oz, egoli hides in his bunker while hailme conjures the little boy from “It’s A Good Life” Twilight Zone episode casting coaches, players, all future hope (but ‘not’ self-critique any) into the football cornfield… part of the ‘process’ he says.
Opportunity & the law of averages considered they have better players now in 2009 than was the case in 2008 courtesy another draft & off-season of free agency to avail themselves of. This duo – “the best gm (pioli) and head coach (haley) candidates in the entire NFL” according to many pundits before this season began has resulted in no improvement at all – in fact, just the opposite.
The 2009 team is worse than the 2008 model by any rational analysis- one that is regularly getting blown out during the season’s latter stages, a time when it should be improving, not regressing. And now, TV blackouts after some 20 years of none… utter hopelessness.
    FIRE THEM BOTH: I-M-M-E-D-I-A-T-E-L-Y

  24. JoeSchmoe says: Dec 21, 2009 3:45 PM

Whitlock should change his name to “dimwhit” and add adverbs such as: ‘douche bag’, and ‘sensationalistic for the sake of attracting attention’.
NO coach deserves an ouster after just one year of taking over a horrible organization. Not even god himself (if he existed) could save those Chiefs right now, ….or the Browns, ….or the Rams, ….. or the Bucs.

  27. Outsyder says: Dec 21, 2009 4:12 PM

People saying Dorsey and Jackson are epic fails just never follow football.
DTs take years to develop. You rarely have day 1 or even year 2 impact players at that position.
Name one DT that has had an impact this year in the first 3 rounds? No one. Name someone that has had an impact from 2008′s draft? No one.
Not to mention the entire 3-4 is predicated on outside rushing linebackers. Hali is a converted DE to OLB and they really have no one opposite him except the aged Vrabel.
This stuff takes time to gel and it takes time for the players on the line to figure things out. D linemen take the longest of any position to figure things out.

Oh yeah? I’d say the total number of wins is a pretty “rational analysis”… And that would point towards the fact that we are better in 2009 because we have more wins. Ask anyone logical, and that makes since.
