Stafford likely out again, but Lions won't name starter

Taken in the second round of the 2007 Draft, Drew Stanton was once a candidate to be the “quarterback of the future” in Detroit.

With Matthew Stafford expected to miss another week, he may at least get to start a few games in the present.  Stanton replaced Daunte Culpepper to open the second half of Detroit’s loss to Arizona and the offense quickly turned around.

“We put 17 [offensive] points on the board in a half of football and in
the National Football League, that’s a good half of football,” said Jim Schwartz, the football coach of the Detroit football team.  Football.

Culpepper has not been playing well, so the Lions may as well get a look at Stanton.  Despite the offensive improvement Sunday, however, Stanton’s numbers were dreadful: 72 yards on 19 attempts, with an interception.

There was one positive to draw for the Lions from their close loss.  Along with Tampa’s victory, Detroit moved up to the second slot for next year’s Draft, according to these opponent winning percentage numbers.

Cue the “Who cares about the Lions?” comments.

It’s going to be awesome when the Lions finally make it to the Super Bowl in 2057 and I can mock you all from beyond the grave about how I have been a fan all along.

Yes I am a huge fan and it may sound bad but I think this new coach and GM are on the right track. If we have a draft like we did last year and go Def. first two picks. And stafford gets healthy again we will be respectable next year maybe 2

Well this weekend moved us into the #2 spot, so please St Louis, if you are going to stay at #1, TAKE A QUARTERBACK!

  9. tedskro says: Dec 21, 2009 5:21 PM

No St. Louis win one more so the Lions are embarrassed with #1 again, but St. Louis has flirted with #1 the past couple years so maybe we should be nice

Oh? Do the Lions have starters? I thought they just collected players from other teams’ practice squad and pick from that group each sunday. I guess thats kinda harsh, they arent as bad as last year.

Hell, as a football fan I want the Lions to be competitive. Schwartz is a better coach than maybe half the NFL HC’s. Any fanbase that’s had to suffer through years of Matt Millen deserves something.
    Good luck guys.

I care about the Lions. I mean you gotta admit it’d be interesting to see if they could beat any of the Top 10 teams in college football. If you agree with that, then you care too!

i have a feeling that if schwartz can get a few young guys to put up numbers like some of the rookies that he brought in this year i think this team will start to see an upward trend while the bears suffer at the bottom of the NFC NORTH for the stupid moves that they made this past year for cutler and adams

Culpepper and Stanton are equal in talent but no experience, but at least Stanton has potential.
