Favre's midweek press conference should be interesting

As the feud between Vikings quarterback Brett Favre and coach Brad Childress moved to the back burner for a day, it could be back to a full boil by the time Favre gets together with the media for his Wednesday press conference.

We all know by now that Brett Favre plus microphones often equals plenty of fodder for discussion and debate -- especially when ESPN's otherwise ho-hum Monday nighter between Minnesota and Chicago suddenly has acquired a considerable dose of spice.

So look for the specially-made T.O. cameras to be trained on Childress for three-plus non-stop hours.

And look for more opinions to emerge this week, such as these observations from former Packers safety LeRoy Butler.

"Everybody in Minnesota knows that Brett Favre is running that organization," Butler told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (via the Minneapolis Star Tribune).  "When the head coach leaves and goes and picks him up in his SUV, and brings him to the facility, everyone knows who's running the Minnesota Vikings.  So I'm not surprised Brett won out.  If the coach says to come out of the game, you come out of the game. . . .

"Brett should have said, 'OK, I'm taking a lot of hits, I'll come out of the game.'  He doesn't want to do that.  You can't show your coach up like that.  It's 80 percent Brett's fault, but it's 20 percent Childress' fault.  He let it happen. . . .  It was just a matter of time before it happened."

And happened it has.  The question becomes what will happen next.

Our popcorn is ready.

  10. PackFaninPackLand says: December 23, 2009 12:29 AM

Florio is such an incredible phony, and this non-story is just more Olbermann-ization of the news. I heard Florio today on a radio show comparing Favre wanting to stay in the Carolina game to what Peyton Manning said after their Thursday night game - that he would do whatever the Head Coach Caldwell said, in terms of playing some, most, or all of the last 2 games. What ??? Although Manning DID admit he wanted to play all of both games ! Guess Florio "forgot" that !

That's not even comparing apples to oranges, it's comparing apples to elephants. First off, the win by Indy took them to 14-0 and guaranteed them home field advantage throughout the playoffs - in the Queens game they were still in the hunt for a #1 seed and homefield advantage themselves, not to mention they are trying to hold off the Eagles from getting the #2 seed away from them. What coach would pull his starter then ??? Maybe if he'd had 3 intereceptions, but Favre didn't have any.

Does anyone think Caldwell or Dungy would have "EVER" taken Manning out with him up 7-6 in the 3rd quarter in that situation ??? Not ... a ... chance. And the idea that Manning, or Brady or McNabb or Brees or whoever wouldn't have bristled at being taken out in that situation, is complete bull$hit. They would have pitched a fit. Ofcourse no other coach would have been that stupid to even suggest it to begin with but such is the mind that is Childress, but the idea that ANY quarterback in that situation would go "oh, okay, I'll just sit on the bench" with all that was on the line for the Queens in that game, is simply ridiculous. I'd be more concerned if Fvare DID want to come out in that situation.

Hey Florio: a.) name another Head Coach that would take out his star quarterback in that situation ??? And b.) Name another quarterback that would just willingly go sit on the bench in that situation ??? The answers are none, and none. But of course Florio doesn't ever mention THAT. Even as a lifelong Packers fan this is amazing that this is even a story, but I'm sure Florio will milk it for everything he has and there'll be another 50 posts about this non-story over the next several weeks, even if (god forbid) the Queens make the Super Bowl.

Besides, didn't Manning wave off Dungy when he wanted to punt on 4th down a couple of years ago and he kept the offense on the field and went for it ??? I guess Florio "forgot" that incident too !

I can only IMAGINE the $hitstorm Florio and the other hypocrites in the media would drum up if Favre ever waved off a 4th down punt and went for it, against the wishes of his Head Coach.

  14. TSE says: December 23, 2009 1:15 AM

Well star players are move valuable than coaches anyhow, so you certainly can show up a coach. Showing up a coach doesn't actually cost points, it is an intangible that only affects people that aren't secure with thinking logically; it causes people to create emotional distractions from objective perspectives. And while it may make you "feel" better to not see it, it's really not a big deal at all, and it should not be implied that it is a high-level unwritten rule when it isn't critically important to any significant drop-off of the percentage odds of winning a given football contest.

  15. shaggytoodle says: December 23, 2009 1:16 AM

This just more evidence that Favre feels that he is above the team, it wasn't completely evident in his time in GB, and now it's just foolish, could you imagine if Peppers would have broken Favre's leg he would look like more of a clown then he does right now. It's a shame that one of the reason makes football great is s that it is the ULTIMATE team sport. That you have someone that is as selfish as him.

Part of me is almost starting to think these guys are leading the media on to create something out of nothing. Yeah, they lost the games legitimately, but most of what's being reported is happening off the field.

Sets the stage for an "Overcoming adversity" type story that the NFL and its fans just eats the heck up.

Butler and the other boys who still seem to have their souls hurt because of Brett "defection" to the Vikings and his "talent" comment, need to pick up their egos from the ground and hush up. I highly doubt they will however since the Journal-Sentinels' sports "team" shows their Brett obsession, one way or the other, on a seemingly daily basis. Its been two seasons, damn. Arent you and the newspaper you write weekly columns for the ones who "supported" the Packer QB change when it happened?

LeRoy, rather than opining with your, to be frank, irrelevant commentary thats only geared to the bitter cry-baby "Let him go to the Vikings, our line will regret coming out of retirement" until they won both games at which point it changed to "...well wait till he fails in the playoffs... yeah, lets go with that" Packer fans that live here, focus on recording better Eisenberg Wiegel and Carlson commercials, specifically, ditching the "Hi, Im LeRoy Butler, inventor of the Lambeau Leap.." line you open them up with. Oh, and the "Dont drop the ball, make the call" line was played out when Robert Brooks, Gilbert Brown, and Santana Dotson (for a different law firm) ran it into the ground. Tell 'em to come up with something different.

It's clear now that Favre has been doing this all to save the Packers.

He clowned Ted Thompson repeatedly (hopefully it's enough to get him fired), he mired the Vikings in mediocrity for years to come by earning the biggest imbecile to coach a team since Kotite an extension, he dismantled our primary competition's locker room from within, he created disarray among an already ultra-fairweather fanbase, and after this season, when he retires again after singlehandedly knocking the Vikings out of the playoffs, he'll leave the place an even bigger mess than it is now. Sure, he padded his own stats along the way, but he's Favre. That's what he does.

So, all of you GB fans that have hated Favre all year: read between the lines. If we get rid of Ted and the Vikings are stuck with Childress and that inflatable pile of crap, we rule the North for years to come. Brett has done everything he can to make sure that happens.

"Typical media hype as well" You guys couldn't be more giddy for a surprise Favre story right be for the Christmas season. If you haven't figured it out both Chilly and Favre have moved passed this already! Let's just keep any and everything an issue. Ask any "Cincy" player or fan right now and they look at comments about any NFL player such as this down right ridiculous. Now, for God's sake what if something would have happened to either one of them that would have been "life threatening" this week?? Live and let happen, the story will be told later when the book closes. Move on and start reporting matchups and and quit your repetitive gunslinging!! Further more the Vikings are in a hell of a lot better situation this year than last.... They have a complete team who knows there capabilities and all teams have "Bad" days. They will dust there cleats off and move on you too can do the same!!

  32. argos says: December 23, 2009 6:34 AM

I used to like/respect you Florio until you mentioned to Paul Allen on KFAN that the way Childress should handle the Chilly/Favre situation is for Chilly to "hope Favre gets injured."

These comments, along with benching Peterson for an entire quarter for fumbling not only strip you of any credibility as a football mind but also those of an adult/rational mind.

I know you're scarred from the MN Superbowl losses but you should try to quell your personal issues here and stick trying to see the situation for what it is, not what you want it to be for web hits.

Hoping that the QB who actually gives the team a chance in the playoffs gets injured so he will learn a lesson is THE most rediculous mean-spririted idea I've heard to date. The kind of thing a child would say.

    Shame on you.

  33. trickbunny says: December 23, 2009 6:35 AM

It's been this way since the very first "flirtation" between Childress and Favre. I mean, Childress has acted like Favre's cuckold in that he let Favre jerk around the whole organization with his diva-like indecision about coming back. Favre finally decides he *isn't* going to come back- and the Vikings make their plans with Rosenfels and Jackson... Then, the second Brett changes his mind a couple weeks later- and decides he does want to play, Childress drops everything for him, immediately demotes the two guys who were told they'd be the starter and the backup, and rushes to Mississippi to be by Brett's side and coddle him.

Seriously, it's a disturbing relationship between those two. Ick.

  34. JimmySmith says: December 23, 2009 6:36 AM

Florio, you are going to be disappointed. Favre will try to brush this off with his good ol' boy routine a lame excuse and then go to explain that he and Chilly are best friends (with benefits no less).

It wouldn't hide the fact that Childress has been exposed for the fool that he is but don't expect to the Viking fans to see reality. They have an unlimited ability to justify everything and anything under the sun; Loveboat, ah that was just a social gathering (for McKinnie, it was also lunch down at the Y) scalping Superbowl tickets, don't you know, everyone does it, Tice just needed a couple of extra bucks. Their distorted view of the world is that signing a drunk DE and a couple of Packer cast offs somehow equals a Superbowl.

Here is the best part, Childress got his contract extension so this running joke of a coach will not end soon.

  35. last starfighter says: December 23, 2009 6:42 AM

I do imagine that BF will try to save face at the press conference and say that there is no disagreement with the coach and that its an overblown misunderstanding yada yada yada and then blame the loss at Carolina on McKinnie and whoever else he can find to point a finger at.

Ok just for reference who say that Brett was right to try and stay in and its his moral duty to ignore his coach here is a historical reference. In a playoff game George Siefert benched Joe Montana in favor of Steve Young. Young played poorly and Siefert was heavily criticized by everyone except for Joe. Steve Young won a Super Bowl later in his career which I am sure was helped by the play off experience he had under his belt, however the result doesn't matter. What does is Joe Montana, a far greater QB than Brett Favre will ever be, quietly sat on the bench and didn't make any public complaints or critiques of the coaching staff. He didn't yell at George on the sideline or tell the world his story of wrongfully being benched and certainly didn't refuse to stay on the bench. Thats not what Brett is though, in his mind he is bigger, better than the coaches. Shaun Hill once almost got benched but asked Sing' for one more chance, he got it, he won the game. Brett told his coach he wasn't leaving, he didn't, he lost. The difference, besides winning, will be the attention he brought on everyone in the Vikings locker room.

    this class sucks,

    1. Please, NEVER compare T Jackson to Steve Young again
    2. Chilly had a discussion with Favre about coming out not because he was playing poorly (he was completing over 70% of his passes at that point, when he had more than .7 seconds to even attempt a throw), but because his line couldn’t protect him. Joe Montana came out due to one of his many bad games which have gotten washed out by history.
    3. Diva QBs come no bigger than Joe Montana
    4. Joe was not happy at all that he was forced out for Steve Young, in that game or when he was forced off the team. The only reason why you don’t remember hearing anything about that specific game is because you didn’t have the media saturation that you have today.

He was on the hot seat, Favre saved his job and got him an extension! Favre has earned the right to stay in a game where they are up 1 pt in the third and in the middle of a playoff race!! You pull guys maybe when you are blowing a team out or your playoff seed is secure!! If they go into the playoffs on a 4 game losing streak and AZ wins out Minny is the 4th seed!! NO BYE WEEK!! What was CHILLY thinking??? Favre getting hurt is def. a concern but in THAT situation???

  52. Nate_G says: December 23, 2009 10:09 AM

I'm going to guess that this will be a big non-event. I'm not saying there are issues there, but if you are going to the press conference looking for a story, you will be grasping at straws to get anything...

Quoting LeRoy Buttler? Seriously? The guy has has it out for Favre since he left. I'd recommend quoting someone credible. Oh, and do people actually believe themselves when they say that a legitimate MVP candidate should sit down if asked to in the middle of the 3rd quarter of a 7-6 game?

I'm more concerned about what led up to all of this. There were dozens of things that could have been done to help the offense out. Changing the game plan should have happened after the 3rd 3 and out during the first quarter. It obviously wasn't working. Why Childress didn't sit down with Favre and figure something out at that point is beyond me. The Vikings playcalling has always been week. I'll give Chilly credit in that he (for the most part) seems to learn from his mistakes, but this is one area that desparately needs improvement. I'd imagine that hiring a hall of famer with 19 years of experience to be the field general was done in part to take advatage of that.... if Childress doesn't like it now, then I really don't know what to say. I for one am like most Vikings fans who would be more than happy to see Childress fired and let Favre call all the plays.

This is hilarious! "Move on. No story here" Yeah right! That's why the national media is all over it! Lead story on ESPN. Let me see if I can add some clarity for any Vikes fans that aren't just in denial. The story isn't about Farve refusing to be taken out of the game. It's that HE TALKED TO THE MEDIA about it after the game! And don't bring up the lame..."he was asked a question about it" excuse. You don't answer the question! And Florio is totally being logical to assume that Brett won't shut up about it, given his past record of not being able to shut up. This is a BIG story because the future HOF'er had to let America know that Chilly is his bitch. When Manning was asked about playing the last two games he gave the correct answer, it's up to coach. Now maybe in private he told Caldwell "I'm playin' and your my bitch" but he didn't tell the media! Now I know a lot of Vikes fans figured we'll win it with Farve because he beat us so many times, with our superior players we're a shoe in. Well guess what, Farve didn't beat you all those times, our TEAM beat you! And when Farve was no longer willing to be a team guy, he finagled his way out of town in seach of more glory, for himself. Remember Elway? He reigned it in and played game manager in order to win with his team. I hope somebody asks Brett specifically if he is in Chilly's doghouse for changing plays. An honest man? Honest men don't relay private conversations with supposed friends (James Campen) to the media.

I'm hoping for driveway sit-ups and a teary eyed "thats muh head coach" sort of presser. Intentionally to screw with people. Hell, I wouldn't be against Favre intentionally throwing the next couple games just so we back into the playoffs and play against Green Bay, just he can stick it to them one more time and build the drama a little more.

Anyone who is concerned about a coach and QB having a mild discussion on the sidelines of a game they should have been winning by 21+ points is insane. Football is played with emotion and sometimes it spills over.

Wait, forget all that, Favre is clearly the devil, and you cheese packers have been right all along, ALL HAIL BOB NELSON!

Childress is the worst head coach in the league, and will be fired as soon as the Vikings reach Los Angeles in 2011.
Let Favre be Favre you idiot.

That was all a joke. I think we all know Favre didn't sign with the Vikings and help get them to 11-3 for the benefit of the Packers.

You have a real bad habit of taking people on this site seriously. You should work on that.

With regard to the game on Sunday? Not so much. With regard to Superbowl XL? Yes.

I've recently discovered the closeted-homosexual-posing-as-Mr. T mentality that makes up the modern Steelers fan.

They're every bit as delusional as Bob Nelson, even more oversensitive than the average Vikings fan, and they take the "If we lose, we'll drag out the rings" outlook you accuse us of to an entirely new level. You can't blame me for wanting to take advantage of that and rip on them.

It's completely hilarious, way better than the Pack-Vikings or Pack-Bears banter. You should try it yourself.
