Mangini "very comfortable" with progress in Cleveland

Browns coach Eric Mangini isn’t focused on the arrival of his new boss, Browns president Mike Holmgren.  Mangini wants to make his case to remain coach by closing out the season strong.

“That’s really a discussion for after the season,” Mangini said about his future to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.  “Whatever the decision
is, the decision is. I’m very comfortable with the things we’ve done and I know the
things that we’re building here. So it’s not going to be a focal point.”

It’s hard to imagine Holmgren keeping Mangini, although a four-game winning streak to end the season couldn’t hurt.  The Browns have won two straight, and will be favored over the Raiders Sunday.

Mangini has had a propensity to compare his Browns to Bill Belichick’s initial Patriots team.  Now he’s comparing his struggles to other colleagues from around the league.

”I think if you’ve been a head coach, you understand the different
things that go into any season. Mike, his last year in
Seattle, had a tough season. They were 4-12. You go through those
things. Jeff Fisher has taken a lot of heat and he
turned that around.”

Holmgren and Fisher, of course, have a long track record of success that Mangini does not.  And while Holmgren has close connections with a huge number of coaches in the league, he has no prior history with Mangini.

That’s only because Holmgren has guaranteed him that he’ll leave the ball boy job open for Mangini, and instead of a $$$$$$$ buyout, Mangini will instead get free buffets for the remainder of his stated contract.

Who in their right mind would think this guy can be a head coach in the NFL? High school coach at best.

  3. rodstiffington says: Dec 22, 2009 1:08 PM

God… how many times are you going to rehash the same story?
New headline: “Holmgren has no history with Mangini, that means he will fire Mangini ASAP”.
You’re getting to be as much as a hack journalist as the crew at ESPN.
    Douche Bag.

Hmmmm, sounds like Mangini is learning from our president. Saying that we’re making progress and moving in the right direction when in reality, the Browns and our country are both spinning down the drain. Doubt me on either one? Keep watching…….

Mangini was also very comfortable with and compared his progress in Cleveland to his recent colonoscopy.

The problem with Mangini for the most part is not what he does on the field it is what he does off the field. It is his lack of character. It’s his refusal to treat anyone with respect. He has no ethics, is incapable of telling the truth and he cannot be trusted. The man is simply a very very bad person and a person who the NFL should not be associating itself with.
Given a choice I would rather my team lose year in year out than win with a person with the moral character of a Mangini running my team. But fortunately that is not a decision we have to make. Mangini’s philosophy of ruling thru fear and lies is outdated and it will not work in the NFL anymore. At least it will not work for someone who lacks a reason for players to follow him. If he had a reputation of achievements he could get away with treating people poorly. If he had a sense of humor and charisma like Parcell’s it would soften some of his rough edges. But he has no positive NFL reputation or history of accomplishments nor the personality to get away with his behavior. He will be constantly fighting against his team and his teams will almost always play with heart or effort as they have done the last 4 years. That is assuming he ever has a team again after this season ends.

I am absolutely positive that after Mangini is fired the the Panthers, Texans, Redskins, Cowboys, Seahawks, Raiders will all fly him in for an interview for head coach.

Mangini is a complete buffoon. He tries to bring up Fisher and Big Show, but those two guys have had success(re: Super Bowl appearances) while Mangini was only successful in being a rat.

As a Pats fan I hate Mangini as much as the next, but I do think he gets a pretty bad wrap. He salvaged a Jets team that Herm Edwards ran into the ground and inherited a Brown’s team that didn’t have much talent to speak of. The guy can coach, whether his players like him or not.

Mr.Florio. Could you please stop bashing Mangini and his coaching ethics. He has a “System” and a vision. It will not happen overnight. It takes time. I know the fines for parking at the wrong place in Berea and players not paying for stuff in there hotel may seem
“petty” to some…Where I come from you do what the boss says otherwise you get punished…Also – Mr.Florio – I know he reads this website and he has feelings too…So – Why not write a positive article about him.

    ’nuff said.

  18. Rob Noxious says: Dec 22, 2009 1:36 PM

    Mike,
I think you’re wrong about this.
Given his position, power structure and time frame – Holmgren would be smart to keep Mangini for another season.
Since Holmgren will be putting in place practically a new organization from the top down, it makes the most sense to not change everything at once. That way he can take another year to evaluate everything, get to know Mangini and see if they are compatible, and get his long term plan in place.
He can just as easily dump Mangini next season without it reflecting badly on himself.
Anyway, that’s what I would do. I don’t work in sports, but I do work in management. My philosophy is to come into a new place and evaluate how it is currently running. Only change things that I see as major problems at the beginning. Then make more sweeping changes at the end of the first year.

    @ Roynp3
As a fellow Pats fan I have to strongly, but respectfully, disagree.
In his one year as Pats defensive cooridnater in 2005, the defense was HORRID. Worse than this year’s. The Jesters team he inherited was, truthfully, not that bad. Don’t forget that the Jesters were one missed FG away from playing the Pats in the 2004 AFC Championship game. The ’05 Jesters season was killed by losing both Pennington and the backup (Fiedler?) QB in the same game vs. Jax early on in the season.
And now, Ratboy has taken a Browns team and sunk it to lows not previously seen. That, in itself, is an accomplishment.

Mangini didn’t draft legacy Clay Matthews Jr. Having said that, here’s what espn said about the young linebacker. “Matthews has 10 sacks in 11 starts this season. That’s a rookie record for the Packers, and ties him at ninth among all NFL players this season.” That alone should get Mangini a ticket out of town. Your defense is horrible and you draft a center instead of this guy? Idiotic.

Please explain to me how you are able to make this personality judgment. Other than what you read Florio puke out on a daily basis, or what your hear some other talking head say on TV…. please provide a little background of how you’ve gotten to know Mangini so well. Have you been in one of his teams locker room? Have you met him? Do you personally know anyone that has even said a word to the guy? Please enlighten all of us who have not been lucky enough to be around an NFL head coach long enough to gain a deep understanding of him and his “philosophies”- I’m fascinated!

I agree. I don’t like him, but I’m not letting that get in the way of the job he has done with the undertalented Browns. If you told me before the season started that they would be with out B. Edwards and K. Winslow, I would have guess they would win 2-3 games. I don’t see the reasoning of a one year and out coaching staff. But Mangini is a dick none the less.

    Let’s see:
no Barton, no D’Qwell. no Brodney. no more Rogers. Womack, St. Clair, Benard, Jennings,
    Stuckey, Trusnik, Furrey on defense,
Roth, Moore. The list goes on and on.
Mangini mishandled the Quinn situation, but give the guy a break. Vince Lombardi couldn’t win with the above roster.

Mangini had those players at one time and couldn’t win. He couldn’t even make his team look competitive. How long did it take for the Browns to score an offensive TD?? That should have been goal #1 for him. How long did it take for the Browns to get a rushing TD by a RB? That should have been goal #2.
Mangini mishandled Quinn, Harrison, Winslow (like him or not, the offense needed him), he F’d up the draft. Cribbs should have been used on offense a lot more. Let him run slants, get him the ball in open space. Mangini didn’t utilize the talent he had, he repressed it.

Fisher “has a long history of success”? Really? Oh, I am behind the times. His greatest feat was getting to a superbowl in 1863 and losing to a man who got back to another superbowl since then but was fired for losing the second. Fisher has had more baaaad teams than anyone with a long-term coaching career. Which is fine. Just don’t call it a long history of success.

  37. MSWRavens says: Dec 22, 2009 4:52 PM

WOW! I’m simply amazed anyone here defends this butthead. They’ve had lots of injuries. So what? Every team in the NFL has a list of injuries as long as their arm. His off-field antics with the players (stupid fines, excessive fines, making them travel to his camp, breaking practice rules), and with staffe (Kokinis), and with draft (honestly, I don’t know how much he had to do with that), and trading away almost all the skill players they had…no wonder they don’t win. The organization as a whole has been a luaghing stock all year for much more than their horrid record. As a Ravens fan, I’d love to see this guy stick around…especially because I don’t think the Big Show will succeed very much in turning them around, even more so if Manegnius is around…he’s a cancer and it simply amazes me that there’s anyone who cares about the Browns that would want him to stay!
…and another thing…every once in a while you hear a story about how one team accomplished something because another team gave them some information, or promised that they would or would not do something (such things do actually happen in the draft, etc…). If you have a rat like Mangini, along with a guy like Lerner who stiffs his players (Cribbs) and staff (Kokinis), NO ONE will do squat for you, and in the end it makes being successful that much harder. So enjoy the cellar Brownstains. You’re gonna be there for a loooooooong while!
