Fisher: Teams "don't particularly care for the Chargers"

We are occasionally accused at PFT of making a big deal out of nothing.

With that in mind, here’s a quote from Titans coach Jeff Fisher talking about this week’s game against the Chargers that we don’t think is a very big deal.

“We’ve had some great battles, great matchups, and didn’t wind up on
the winning side of any of them,” Fisher said to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  “… But I know there are some other teams I’ve heard of that don’t
particularly care for the Chargers. Maybe it’s them.”

Fisher, 0-5 against the Chargers, has been accused by San Diego players of instilling a physical/dirty mentality in his teams.  The Chargers have occasionally been accused of the same thing.  Like by Fisher, yesterday.

So there you go: Another pregame trash talk quote that adds spice to Friday’s Titans-Chargers game. NFL Network should feel free to use the dig to promote the game.

Even if it’s not a big deal.

The Titans are very underrated when it comes to the dirtiest NFL teams. Their resume speaks for itself, they should be at the top of the list. Any team that can make Shawne Merriman into a quasi-sympathetic figure by injuring him with obvious intent is pretty dispicable.
Comical that Fisher is calling another team out for this.

You mean team don’t particularly care for teams they have to play against? Jeff Fisher, master of the obvious.
That said, Rivers has some great stats thi year;-)

The chargers are the most overrated team in the last decade. I’ve never seen a more hyped team in all my life. The analysts have them in the super bowl every year and inevitably they go out and get an 8-8, 10-6 record or they go 14-2 and choke. LT is a disgusting player as is Rivers. Norv is terrible and this team is going nowhere in the post season.

  5. Merriman's Dealer says: Dec 23, 2009 4:56 PM

Although it is popular belief or an easy dig to say that Merriman hasnt been the same since he was busted for “doping”, I think he hasn’t been the same since the two great sportsmen from the Titans intentionally damaged him during that game. He finished the season but not as the same disruptive force he once was. And after waiting to have surgery and now battling a lingering foot problem he is a shell of his former self. “Doping” may have contributed to that.
All in retaliation of Young, who takes any chance he gets to over dramatize any type of injury he thinks he might have. Young is such fragile douche.
I hope they dont get caught up any stupid “barbs” with Fischer or the Titans. Stay focused and try and find a way to keep the streak going.
Oh, and hopefully keep C. Johnson under 300yds… Hopefully…

Hey Jeff, teams don’t particularly care for your dirty, thuggish Titans either. GFY Fisher. I am glad the Pats scored 59 on you and wish it had been 159…and it could have been, cause your team flat out quit on you 5 minutes into the first quarter.

  25. Rivers is better than Manning says: Dec 23, 2009 5:39 PM

I guess I just don’t understand when I hear people say the Chargers are Chokers…and I hear it quite a bit. Granted, they did choke the 2006 playoff game away to a much less talented Patriots team. However, if one would like to consider what qualifies as a playoff choke, one would have to look no further than the 2007 and 2008 Colts, who choked against the Chargers both years, unless of course you agree that the Chargers were the better team, then that’s not a choke, it’s just getting beat. By most people’s definition of “chokers”, any team that did not win the superbowl would qualify. You can include all those one and dones by Peyton and co. or the 2007 Titans. And really there has never been any greater choke job than the 2007 Patriots.

  26. raidertg says: Dec 23, 2009 5:46 PM

@Rivers is better than Manning (someone needs to get off the rock)
How about we just count a team that makes it to the playoffs and blows there load in the first game and losses. Or maybe a team team cry’s about there loss and says that the other team was dirty because they can’t win. Or maybe we count a team where the “top” players quite or should I say are always “injured” in the post season. Or maybe it is a team that cliams to have a great QB that has done nothing but run his mouth all the time and done nothing I mean NOTHING to back it up. Are you getting the idea! What an over rated piece of $hit

Yes, but 3-1 in a decade for a SB record the Pats put up is far better then the 0-10 that Team Bambi has put up the past 10 years. Rag on the Colts, but at least they won it 1x. Every year the prognosticators have the powdered blue pussies winning the SB, and every year they choke it way or totally underachieve (and then whine all phucin winter about it). Went 14-2 in 2006, didn’t even win the divisional game – even with home field advantage. Say what you want about the Colts and Pats, but at least they’ve been there and held up a Lombardi (or 3) the past 10 years.
Chargers fans think that their team is one of the best ever, even though they’ve never won anything.

I live in San Diego and I’ve never seen a fanbase so hot & cold when it comes to the Chargers. When they were 2-3 and got smoked by Denver, people were crying about “the season’s over.” Now that they’ve won 9 straight it’s “we should book Super Bowl tickets.” The fans are just as classless as some of the Charger players. In fact, some of the players’ off-field transgressions put the Bengals to shame.
As far as the team ON THE FIELD goes, they are potent on offense and so-so on defense. They get away with so many defensive mistakes because that offense can score like no other. However, they tend to abandon the run way too quickly (which tweaks LT’s vag a little bit) and that, to me, won’t get them past their first round matchup. Teams can run on them and with injuries to their O-Line, speed rushers can probably get to the QB. As much as I like Philip Rivers the QB, the only thing that will prevent him from getting any MVP votes is that mouth of his.

Yeah, that makes sense now. Oh, and by the way, didn’t the Titans have the best regular season record 13-3 last year? What did they do in the playoffs? Can anybody say “choke”.

  37. SDCharger1969 says: Dec 23, 2009 6:14 PM

Well I cannot find the video clip on youtube but in that 2007 game, Merriman rushes Vince Young and something happened, I do not know if it was a penalty or and accidental collision but yea shawne was standing up not moving and Vince collides with him and Vince falls down … they both shook it off, it was not a big deal.
Then Fisher ( insert Jim Rome “allegedly” ) orders the code red and the tight-end at the time, moves in motion down the line and B Lines towards Merriman’s knees. Since then he has not been the same player; coming off the roids is one thing, but that hit pretty much made him average.
Call it what you will … it does not matter
The best revenge against that is just to keep winning. For the chargers … just play football, end the titans chance for a wildcard and all is good.
I was at the game sunday SD vr CIN and when a player was down, SM and Ocho were talking, with what i could see with the binocs, it was a conversation so I do not think Merriman will be going head hunting on anyone; I hope not anyway.
Code Reds or whatever they are called now are garbage

Titans can’t trash the Chargers’ History. I don’t remember how many rings they have between them. I lost count at zero. Talk about hype every year…every year McNair was Super Bowl Bound. They both made it once ever and they both blew it. If Fisher can’t take you there every more than once every 15 years, maybe he should go.
Norv ain’t done a damn thing either, but his team got their receiver, TE, and QB going while their offensive line and running game were on the decline. And they have a mediocre defense.

Seems to me they are trying to take the spotlight off the fact they haven’t won vs the Chargers since Jeff Fisher arrived, even Ryan Leaf managed to beat the Titans. Talk about embarrassing. Oh well, I guess the Titans prefer to deflect the reality that they choked away a home game vs the Chargers in 2007 AND a playoff game vs the Chargers in SD in 2007.
What a bunch of whiners the Titans have turned out to be. I guess the character of a team does mirror that of their QB. Good thing Vince Young was able to dial up the Suicide Hotline in Nashville. Poor guy couldn’t handle the fact he just wasn’t getting it done as an NFL QB. What a baby!

  43. Commish says: Dec 23, 2009 6:46 PM

I think gweetarman said it best. But the Chargers are the the most overrated and over hyped team of the decade. Rivers, LT, & Merrimen walk around with a false sense of entitlement like they’ve won a few superbowls and some conference championships.
That being said, I don’t blame them for calling out the Titans, that team has been the dirtiest for a long time. not only have they taken cheap shots at Merrimen, but Manning & Brady as well from what I’ve seen (not even hard hits, just downright dirty).
The smack talk is great though. Should be a fun game to watch. SD has been on a hot streak and the Titans deserve props for coming out of the hole they fell into this season. With both teams having something to prove it makes for a very entertaining game. smack talk aside.

I wish i could remember Peyton holding his trophy too but every time i try Orton’s face appears and explains it all away.
I wish i could remember the Titans making the playoffs the last two years but every time i try…wait…the Titans made the playoffs last year?
That being said Ralphie, you do have a point. This year will change all that. OH YES IT WILL! (now run out and vote Rivers for MVP)

    Gweetardman,
OK, Peyton beat Grossman, I stand corrected, thank you for that.
My point is, people are always calling the Chargers the chokers when in fact they are no more chokers than anyone else that loses in the playoffs. The Colts have won a superbowl but that is 1 out of 10 post season trips. So what can you say about them the other 9 years?
I can’t really call the patriots chokers because they have won more often than not but you have to admit that 2007 superbowl was more of a choke job than the chargers losing a home game in 2006.
The titans have been one and done the last two years but no one calls them chokers. I don’t care about fair or not I just find it interesting that so many people love to pile on the chargers as being chokers, when in fact Rivers has a better win/loss percentage in the playoffs than Manning or the titans.
When you say Rivers sucks in the playoffs that tells me you know little about football

  60. Rivers is better than Manning says: Dec 23, 2009 9:06 PM

Question: If Rivers sucks in the playoffs and the Chargers are Super Chokers, and the Chargers put the Colts and Titans out of the playoffs in 2007 and the Colts out in 2008, then what does that make the Titans and Colts?
    Answer: You’re an idiot…idiot…idiot….

“Hey Beauregard, you’re totally right on man. I probably speak for all san diegans when i say please….don’t come here! it’s horrible out here! we just hate all this sunshine. so yeah just stay where you are (where ever that is).”
Don’t worry he won’t be going anywhere. The warden is about to revoke his privileges, plus Dragline wouldn’t let him go even if parole was around the corner.
Bottom line— let’s see who’s playing in January. Raider’s and Titan’s, no invites for you… well, that’s not true for sure. If they win their last 2 games and 4 teams have plane crashes, then they get in. Good night now! (Lee Hamilton, if you’re listening, props to you)

    @Rivers is better than Manning,
One thing that is a fact is that the Patriots have caused your boyfriend Philip Rivers to behave irrationally during very important playoff games. Those big-money games seem to exert an intense gravitational influence upon the rising tide of his menstrual blood. He just can’t handle those cramps (that, and the fact that he has a vagina).
Big-time QB’s like Brady and Manning carry teams on their backs during the playoffs. Rivers carries the Chargers in his uterus.

    Rivers is worse than Manning,
Your logic astounds me. That’s as stupid as saying “The Cowboys beat the Saints and the Chargers beat the Cowboys so therefore the Chargers are a better team.” That’s essentially what you just said in the above post.
When your team plays in the playoffs, they will lose quickly because they can’t run and they can’t stop the run. Your defensive line is on its third string nose tackle and LT is spent and over the hill. Sproles is fantastic but he can’t run through the tackles. You have to get him in space. If you get the Ravens or the Broncos again, you’ll go down in flames. The Chargers are entirely too finesse to win in January. This team will never win a Super Bowl…not with the current players and coaches. Rivers is obviously a great talent and he’ll be great for years, but you have no three down back that scares anyone and a lot of your key positions are old with little depth. Plus, you’re going to lose a bunch of guys to FA at the end of the year. The time is now and it’s not happening this year. Add to that the fact that the Broncos are on the upswing and full of young talent. They will overtake the Chargers in two years if not next year.

If I was a coach of a team that started 0-6 and lost 59-0 this year I would keep my mouth shut.

If I was a coach of team that started 0-6 and lost 59-0 and then managed to get my team IN the playoffs, I’d talk a hell of a lot.

Actually what I said was the Chargers beat the Titans and the Colts in the playoffs the last two years so they are the better team and you can’t reasonably call them chokers without calling out those two teams. Sounds logical to me.

  67. gweetarman says: Dec 23, 2009 10:23 PM

    Nope. It doesn’t.

  68. gweetarman says: Dec 23, 2009 10:24 PM

Truthfully, I’m rooting for the Chargers this weekend cause it helps my team if they win. It disgusts me to have to root for the Chargewhores.

Funny hearing Chargers fans get on the soap box about how great of a team they are and try comparing their playoff choke jobs to the Colts and Pats…news for “Rivers is Better than Manning’ those two teams have 4 Lombardi’s between them so they’ve reached the top in this decade while SD hasn’t even made it to the big show.
Also, if the Chargers are so great why do they struggle to sell out?
On a serious note though, I hate hearing any complaining on this site about cheap shots, and dirty play. It’s the NFL, all teams have players who get a bit ‘edgy’.

I stated above that i can’t consider the Patriots chokers because they only choked one year of their great run. The Colts have only NOT choked one year of their run.
    Peyton Manning Playoff Record as Starting QB: 1999 (0-1), 2000 (0-1), 2002 (0-1), 2003 (2-1), 2004 (1-1), 2005 (0-1), 2006 (4-0), 2007 (0-1), 2008 (0-1)
His regular season record during those years:
    13-3, 1o-6, 10-6, 12-4, 12-4, 14-2, 12-4, 13-3, 12-4.
Bottom line: Peyton Manning is the Choke King.
Seriously, with those dominant regular season records he couldn’t win a playoff game in SIX of nine seasons (i.e. choke). SIX, are you kidding me??! That’s horrible. Not to mention most of his playoff wins came in one season. OK, I see your point though, he did win the superbowl. Congrats to Peyton for not choking in 2006. That is quite an accomplishment considering he choked away 8 great regular seasons.
    For comparison Phillip Rivers Playoff Record: 2006 (0-1), 2007 (2-1), 2008 (1-1).
The only one and done (i.e. choke) was his first year as a starting QB. He went to the AFC Championship his second year. It took Peyton 4 years to get to the AFCCG and 6 years to win it all.
We’ll see if Rivers can win one in the next three years, and I think he can. He has a better career winning percentage (70% vs 68%), QB rating (95.4 vs 95.3), and TD/INT ratio (2.35 vs 2.03)than Pey-Pey. Of course, Peyton has the commercials though (over hyped).
Just stating the facts man. (pro-football-reference.com)
I’m not even mentioning the fact that Rivers is 3 and 1 in head to head vs Manning.
    …and the Titans suck too!

  72. sdkeith says: Dec 26, 2009 1:58 AM

Well, Titans fans… i guess you all were wrong. BTW you’re on the clock.

  73. CautiousMan says: Dec 26, 2009 11:13 AM

Titans fans won’t be coming back here. They have been shamed, housed, faced, basically had a can opened on them Goodnight now !!!!

  74. Rivers is better than Manning says: Dec 26, 2009 12:10 PM

I think what we’ve learned is that when a team is favored and loses it’s a choke.
If a team has a home game and is favored in a short week with playoffs on the line, and gets blown up, it’s basically choking on it (I’ll let you guys define “it”).
Thank you Tennesee for giving us the true definition of CHOKE.
Looks like diving at Rivers knees after the whistle didn’t turn out the way you wanted…
