With the folks in Santa Clara and San Francisco engaged in a tug of war for the privilege of building the next home of the 49ers, the team has made its preferences unequivocally known.
Per the San Jose Mercury News, owner Jed York said earlier this week that the team is “completely focused” on the Santa Clara project, and that “any talk about fallback plans is secondary.”
More surprisingly, York acknowledged that the primary fallback isn’t San Francisco.
It’s Oakland.
But while the Niners are focused on Santa Clara, we’re told that the project next to Great America theme park becomes viable only if the 49ers share the venue with the Raiders. So if the Raiders aren’t interested in relocating, Oakland eventually will move to the top of the stack.
The league wants the two teams to share a home, and the Raiders reportedly are “keeping an open mind” regarding that possibility. (Their fans might feel differently.)
Meanwhile, former 49ers president Carmen Policy said he’s “somewhat speechless” regarding the team’s preference to Oakland over San Francisco.
He shouldn’t be. There are real problems with the infrastructure at the proposed San Fran site. We’ve heard scattered rumblings that as much as $500 million will be needed to make the Hunters Point location acceptable for an NFL stadium.
We think it makes sense for the two teams to share a stadium, especially given the current challenges associated with financing a football stadium that, in a one-team arrangement, is used only 10 days per year.
There is a line in the story that says essentially that Raiders fans might feel differently about the Santa Clara location. As Oakland has the WORST home attendance in the NFL at about 45,000 a game this year and has had over half their games blacked out since the return from LA, what the h..l difference does it make. They aren’t supporting the team in Oakland. Who cares if they don’t support the team in Santa Clara?
Used ten days a year for football, but most stadiums are used throughout the year for other things. I’m sure they could find a college team to rent it. Concerts, Soccer games, ect., plenty of things to keep a stadium busy.

In the punch bowl of life, a lot of turds have floated up as posters at your site, giving you crap, just in order to give you crap. So, I am reluctant to disagree with you because it has been pretty vicious around here lately, and I feel sorry for you that you are getting bashed so often. That being said…..
Come on, Mike. You know that they use those stadiums for other events, not just football.
Just the other day, wasn’t it mentioned here that Jones wanted to have the stadium in use during the off-season? Wasn’t there a mention of a boxing match? Concerts?
Before a joint project could happen I would think that Al Davis would either have to:
A) Die
or
B) Be institutionalized by the NFL Comissioner
Otherwise if you thought Mike Tyson marrying Robin Givens was a BAD idea (or for that matter asking Mike Tyson to be a beauty contestant judge), just IMAGINE what it would be like for the 49ers to hitch their future stadium plans to Al.
Soon there could be a perfectly good stadium going unused in Jacksonville.
but what if the raiders and niners need to host playoff games on the same day?!?
:fart noise:
I’m a lifelong Raiders fan and a 13 year season ticket holder at the Coliseum. Honestly as much as I would hate to share anything with the 49ers fans, this is actually a good idea. Realistically it would take another 6-7 years if we were to both try and get our own stadium. And with the way things have been going with SF and Oakland it may never happen. This is a way to get the deal done! And to be watching the game from a venue the Bay Area deserves.
Oakland and San Francisco really need to step there game up, because they may be losing 3 teams out of this, the Raiders, 49ers, and Athletics(I know this is a football site)
Bottom line, I love the coliseum. It is my church, im there practically every Sunday, plus all year during the baseball season. But Mt.Davis is a disaster, and we can’t ever sell that section out. Something needs to change quick, and I think this is the way to do it!
The majority of the money thats made in NFL stadiums is at those 10 games, the fact of the matter is they dont make THAT MUCH money off the other events so while yes they will have other events having two teams in one stadium makes more fiscal sense…..Its a good idea business wise!!
The Niners playing in Santa Clara is like the Jets and Giants playing in Rutherford. Just weird.
But at least it’s still California.
Kenny your forgetting the Raiders and A’s also share a Stadium. Although neither team can come close to selling it out, the Stadium already has year around revenue.
Well 500 million for the Hunters point project… What would it cost to build another bridge across the bay to accomodate game day traffick to a shared stadium in Oakland?
Just build the freaking thing in Santa Clara. how many teams have stadiums in their actual home cities anymore anyway? I can get over sharing a stadium with the raider punks, as long as it’s not named “Raiders stadium” or something like that.
The really cool thing would be to build a stadium either at Kezar or the polo field…..but that wont work, atleast not at any reasonable price tag.
“And NOW, here are your SANTA CLARA Forty-Niners”. Eeks. Sounds weird.
Maybe they’ll be able to shuck the losers mentality with new nomenclature.
He shouldn’t be. There are real problems with the infrastructure at the proposed San Fran site. We’ve heard scattered rumblings that as much as $500 million will be needed to make the Hunters Point location acceptable for an NFL stadium.
Um, thats where they play now, it’s called Candlestick Park.
Truth, they want a new stadium because the stadiums they are in are outdated!!! And like you said the Oakland teams do not get the support needed…Business wise the Raiders will make and spend less money dealing with the niners who bring in more revenue than the A’s…..And they wont have to worry about playing on the dirt infields which always irritated me
I mean really he is surprised about them not wanting to be located in Hunters Point. I know must of you don’t know the area but just take the rep that the Raider fan have and add a $hit load of guns and you are not even close. That is one of the worst areas in all of Cali and that says alot. On a side note we in Oakland would welcome the niners with open arms. I mean everyone like to have there bitch close!!
Raider fans will support the team . The reason Oakland doesn’t sell out is because of a “little” structure added on to the stadium called Mount Davis. You cannot watch a game there.
NOW it all makes total sense, they most definitely haven’t been focused on playing FOOTBALL.
My concern or question is how do they switch over from week to week all the Niners banners, logos, gear, to all Raiders stuff every week? If I’m going there as a Niner fan I don’t want to see Raiders stuff everywhere. I don’t want to see a pictures with 3 trophies, I want to see a pictures with 5 trophies.
Also what are they gong to name the Stadium? The Al Davis/Bill Walsh Memorial Stadium….? Oh, wait… I forgot, Al Davis only looks dead, never mind.
Bill Walsh Memorial it is!
There is no way the stingy-ass people of Santa Clara County are gonna pay for a stadium. These people rejected a 12 cents a month tax to make the San Francisco Giants the San Jose Giants. Why would they support a stadium now.

Why is it wierd? All the fans at games are from Santa Clara County anyway.
P.S. Don’t want to share any stadium with low life criminal Raider fans. The crime rate would soar.
The Greatness of the Raiders is in their Future in Oakland. We welcome the 49ers and their fans to Oakland to share our Commitment to Excellence.
Remember fans, this is a Real Estate deal, and there are only three factors which will make this deal: location, location, location.
Let’s see, what is the best location to get the most people into the stadium:
1) A dirt parking lot with a two lane street as it’s main access, Candlestick has horrible accessibility.
2) An amusement park 40 miles from their home city, with a street trolley and a log flume ride to get you there.
3) A facility directly between an interstate freeway and the region’s largest mass transportation system, and only two miles from an international airport.
If you want to make money, and that is what the NFL is all about, you build where you can make a return on your investment, and Oakland is that location.
Sorry San Fran or Santa Clara, you may have tasty restaurants and awesome strip malls, but your fans are going to be watching the NFL in Oakland in 2020.

What? You have to feel a sense of nostalgia just to watch the Whiners play? Crying about logos and banners!! If you feel so passionate about seeing banners and logos to get pumped up to watch your team then perhaps you should host a fundraiser to get the Niners the money needed to build their own stadium that is free of RAIDER logos and banners.
As a life long Niner fan I am very leary of seeing my team lumped in with the culture Oakland Raiders.
From the ownership down through the coaches, staff, players, and fans they promote a criminal mentality of vilence and idiocy. They can’t watch the game without assaulting the rival teams fans as well as fellow Raider fans. Whether the team wins a post season game or loses there are riots in the streets.
I want to enjoy going to Niner games not dread it.
Sorry, as a season ticket holder of the Niners I couldn’t share a seat with Raider Scum.
I don’t like Santa Clara but it would be way better than Oakland.
MVPnis, the Raider fans aren’t supporting the team now. The Cowboys are averaging almost DOUBLE the Raiders’ attendence. The Redskins’ (who are having a pretty lousy year) are averaging about 40,000 more per game. Blackout after blackout after blackout. Every team that has to travel to Oakland loses money because of the abysmal attendence. There are high schools in Texas that draw better.
As to a new facility being used only 10 times a year let me ask a quick “Do What?” The Deathstar in Arlington has already hosted events such as concerts (George Strait/Reba McIntire and U2) NCAA basketball (UT and UNC). The Final Four is on the way. The NBA All Star game is coming. Texas/OU is on the books. There is a little game called the Super Bowl on the way. Soccer, motocross, boxing… the list goes on. It comes down to whether or not someone can promote the facility.
“they promote a criminal mentality of vilence and idiocy. ”
Does anyone else see the irony of this statement?
Biggest problem (allegedly) is that this new stadium is going to be an all-in-one bonanza. Stores to shop in, basically a city within itself. The weird part, and I wonder how other fans feel about this is; you won’t be able to tailgate. There is going to be a “park-like” setting but tailgating is done. I’ve enjoyed going to games of both teams even though I’m not a fan of either because the tailgating experience is worth red\gold or silver\black in itself.
damn i swear why does everyone swear that a raider fan has tattoos all over and is a damn criminal…the irony is that all norteno gang members are all mostly fans of the niners which we live in northern california so that means there how many active violent niner fans???? don’t say none because you swear like you dont watch the news..haha
i dont care if we had to share a stadium who gives a damn its a stadium its not like you have to live tehre or anything and alright lets say u have a season ticket so what u only gotta be there for like 8 hours for ten days out of the year!!!! and if you don’t like having to share then don’t go its that easy aint no one gonna be forcing you to go if you don’t want to!
I definitely don’t want a stadium to be built next to our homes. We are already surrounded by Great America, an airport, and the loud mission college marching band. Me and my husband will definitely move out soon once this project is finalized.
Thanks…
