Polamalu likely to miss Ravens game

Steelers fans hoping for Troy Polamalu to rescue their sagging pass defense are likely to be disappointed this week.

Polamalu didn’t practice Wednesday.  He said he was encouraged by MRI results, but doesn’t anticipate practicing this week.  He was asked if he would have to practice to play, “I would think so,” Polamalu said.

The Steelers have won only one game that Polamalu hasn’t finished this season, last week’s win over the Packers.

It sounds like there’s a chance Polamalu could play in Week Seventeen.  For the Steelers to still be alive in the playoff hunt, they’ll need to win a second game without him Sunday.

    Did someone teach him how to tackle since he has been hurt? Or maybe cut his hair? The only cool thing Larry Johnson ever did was tackle that fairy by his flowing hair.

    doesn’t matter whether he plays or not; it’s still a RAVENS and STEELERS game. ANYTHING can and will happen! the best team doesn’t always win when these two get together! GOOD GAME COMING UP ON SUNDAY!

    Who needs Polamalu in the secondary when the Steelers have the refs evening out each play. Two additional loses the Steelers should have at home this season (Min and GB) but the refs gave it to the Steelers. Them, Indy and NE get every call in the book. Let’s hope the Ravens kick the snot out of them and put them out of their misery.

    @gforce89 …
    What an idiot! Do you even watch games or do you just haul out this whiny nonsense every time someone mentions the Steelers? I’m sure no one would have trouble knocking the snot out of you. It sounds like you’re nothing but snot. gforce LOL
    Gee, how about forcing yourself to man up and take a loss like a grownup–the same way we took five losses in a row. I guess our paid refs were busy those weeks. How are things in junior high?
    We didn’t have Polamalu or Ben the last time we played the Ravens and the game still went into overtime. I think everyone on the field will give us a good show.

  7. Zeppelin53 says: Dec 23, 2009 5:20 PM

    Actually the Steelers are still alive in the playoff hunt even if they lose to the Ravens this week.
    Here’s the scenario -
    Steelers lose to Ravens, BUT they would need the Titans, Jaguars, and Broncos to lose this week.
    They would also need to win the following week at Miami, and have the Jaguars, Broncos, Jets, and Texans lose.
    It’s almost too easy – Thanks Yahoo! playoff generator!

  8. Big_McLargeHuge says: Dec 23, 2009 5:20 PM

    Troy should have been placed on IR weeks prior. It’s pathetic to see these Steelers crying into their Iron City beer about Troy being the cause for their recent struggles.
    The guy has amazing instincts and closing speed. But Sampson Polamalu isn’t the problem… the team is mind-numbingly one dimensional.

  9. The Coop says: Dec 23, 2009 5:25 PM

    Works for me, I’ve got Ray Rice on my fantasy team and need him to carve up that once-feared Steelers D (like he did a few weeks ago).

  10. Two Parts Rye says: Dec 23, 2009 5:30 PM

    Hey Gregg. They beat the Titans in week 1, which was the game where he was injured while trying to recover a blocked field goal. They also beat San Diego without him. I don’t remember if he played agains the Lions.
    That does not mean that they don’t need him desperately, but check your facts.

    Be interesting to watch that fairy beat your ass on the football field during halftime at a Steelers game. I’d watch.

    Troy is still the best secondary defensive player in the entire NFL….The problem is that any Steeler on defense whose number starts with a 2 should be sent to Canada…They all STINK…..
    The reality is that we have to throw for 500 yards and hopefully outscore em’…cause our piece of SH*T secondary is BAD….real BAD!!
    AS bad as they are…The Steelers are still in it!!

    Really? Did you watch the games (viz., the GB and Minn games)? Explain to me how the refs helped them win these games. Provide me your summary of these games, based on what you saw when you watched them, because I don’t think you know shit when it comes to the topic. Entertain me, moron.

    So you admit Polamalu is a fairy? And if he and another dude wrestled each other, you’d watch.
    Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

    I wonder if we’re going to see a new direction of the madden curse where one of two players on the cover in the future is going to be hit by it and the other is left OK.
    It’s gonna be funny to talk about….

  18. Klytus says: Dec 23, 2009 6:01 PM

    Polamalu didn’t say he definitely wouldn’t play. And players have not practiced during the week and still played the following weekend. Is Troy being coy?
    The Steelers found out last week that they have to win with offense not defense. Both the Ravens secondary and Steelers secondary are shaky. I don’t think it’s going to be the typical Steelers / Ravens game, though it will still be intense.
    GO STEELERS!

  20. Sourdough says: Dec 23, 2009 6:28 PM

    @dubs7_2000: The fact you claim “Hair” is the best Defensive Secondary player in the NFL shows you are A) a blatant homer or B) an incredibly poor judge of who is the best Defensive Secondary player in the NFL. In order to be considered the best Defensive Secondary player shouldn’t “Hair” be on the field more than five times a season!?! “Hair” is fragile.

  22. sixburghrules says: Dec 23, 2009 7:14 PM

    He is a necessary part of the D-fence Pitt has been doing okay but we need him back. If Ben and the offense can put up numbers like lastweek. Lights out Baltimore!

  23. Tomthebombtracy says: Dec 23, 2009 7:30 PM

    I have always wondered about player endorsements. We’ve seen more on Troy on shampoo commercials than on the field. It makes the product look ridiculous.

  24. ppdoc13 says: Dec 23, 2009 7:32 PM

    I can’t say I’m sorry he won’t be playing. We will be without Ed Reed and without our best cover corner. Boo Hoo. Bottom line is that there are no excuses. Next man up.
    I HATE the Squealers and their fans. But I respect their achievements. Steelers vs Ravens IMO is the best rivalry game in the NFL. With the exception of the two blowouts in our favor during McNairs first year here every game is a gut-wrenching, hair-graying affair.
    I expect that this will be no different.
    Bring it on. Go Ravens.

    Ben is a good QB, but he’ll never see those numbers again. The Ravens’ secondary is a disaster, but there is only one Jarrett Bush in the league. There’s a damn good reason for that too.
    Steelers will win by less than a field goal once again. They really need this win, so the officials will make sure they get it.

    Lol @you blaming the officials already for a win.. Maybe the officials will finally see Harrison being held.. that would be nice.

    Dear Deb and Matt,
    I love that my post got under your skin. I must have hit the nerve of reality. Both of you need to start watching the games a little closer and notice the amount of call the Steelers get. Wake up and take the black and gold glasses off. Sure, you can respond again calling me names….I love it! I can’t wait to read it! Sounds like the Steeler fans are nervous. I’ve really been enjoying the “unleashed hell” that your coach has put on the league. GO RAVENS!

  29. Tomthebombtracy says: Dec 23, 2009 8:38 PM

    Re ppdoc13
    I seem to remember a prime time game where Ben threw 5 touchdowns in the first half and it was 35-0. But you’re right. It is a great rivalry. Worthy of the two great teams and great cities.

  30. jeh9876 says: Dec 23, 2009 8:39 PM

    @sourdough
    First if Troy is not the best player in the secondary who is? I’m not agreeing or disagreeing just curious who you think is cause my guess is that you are the type of person that watches espn for all your facts and knowledge. You probably don’t like him because he does not show boat so you don’t notice him as much. Just so you know he has as many picks as Ed Reed this season who i’m guessing you believe is the best. And Also how can you say he is fragile did you see the play he got hurt on. If you have ever played football or any sport which i’m guessing you haven’t you would know your knee is not supposed to bend like that so I don’t know how that is fragile anyone would have been hurt.
    @chapnasty
    Have you ever watched a football game in your life. I’m pretty sure that everyone comments on how good he tackles and knifes (which means cutting the legs) figured you don’t know what that is considering you don’t know a good tackler when you see one you moron

  31. BigOx says: Dec 23, 2009 8:52 PM

    I’m tired of hearing the whining about Polamalu not playing. The last I heard, Ed Reed (arguably one of the top 3 safeties in the league) is out, their #1 and #2 corners are out, their return man and probably the best corner they currentlly have on the field is out (and done for the year). Injuries are abound. It’s late in the year. And yes, when Dennis Dixon played the Ravens last time it went to overtime. But if you look at Big Bens record, following a concussion, you should be thankful Dixon was the QB or it may not have made it to overtime. Oh, and the play that basically ended overtime, and set up the game winning field goal, was made by a rookie linebacker (Kruger) that was probably only playing in his 2nd or 3rd game of the season. So don’t tell me a rookies only lose games.

  32. Laxer37 says: Dec 23, 2009 9:06 PM

    Deep down all the haters know that Christmas came in September this year for 31 NFL teams when #43 got hurt. After he limped off you squeeled like a little school girl at the thought of now having a shot.
    The envy you have for the most successful franchaise in NFL history is quite entertaining.

  33. dubs7_2000 says: Dec 23, 2009 9:09 PM

    Matters not to me that you know NOTHING about football if you believe he’s not….fell sorry for ya. Ask anyone that knows football which you obviously don’t…
    take any coach…with the exception of Maingie from the Clev. brownstains (he dosent know shit) and everyone would want him on their squad…EVERYONE of them!!

  34. VoteGreenParty says: Dec 23, 2009 9:33 PM

    Whoa…I didn’t know that so much of the Ravens secondary is out!
    Our secondary obviously needs to learn to play without Polamalu. If they can step their performance up to even to that of an average NFL secondary, we should be good to go.
    This would allow Roethlisberger, the O-line, Mike Wallace, Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Heath Miller, Rashard Mendenhall all to shine.
    Go Steelers.

  35. savage351 says: Dec 23, 2009 9:56 PM

    If there was a heart for a defence it would be troy polamalu,if there was a brain it would also be troy, r u kidding me! no one wants pittsburgh in, cause there just too dangerous, in the clutch and 4th and inches forget the opponent.The outcome is pittsburgh by14.hahahahahaha,baltimore who?now if r.lewis knew what was good for him he’d sign with the steelers so would ed reed and sanatana moss so would steve smith wake up people.

    @gforce89 …
    Got under my skin? You mean like a tick? Actually, I assumed from the “g” in “gforce” that you were a whining Green Bay fan and responded accordingly. So … you’re a Ravens fan! Ah well, that puts a different spin on it. Am I nervous? Nope. I’ve got nothin’ to lose. Our chances of making the playoffs are slim, so I just want to see the team play spoiler. And nothing would make me happier than seeing them spoil your day. Facing a Troyless secondary and a third-string QB in Baltimore you guys still had to go into a 5th quarter to bring it home last time. If anyone should be nervous, it should be you.
    Enjoy the game. LOL

    Who cares if Polamalu is playing or not….I’m more worried to see if the Ravens’ male cheerleading squad makes the trip! Bundle up boys its going to be cold in the burgh.

  39. BigOx says: Dec 24, 2009 3:00 PM

    @ i’m president charlie!
    For the sake of your wife/cousin I sure hope the Raven’s male cheerleaders do indeed make the trip. It will be the first set of real balls she’s seen other than those on the Christmas tree.

  40. Vox's Mommy says: Dec 24, 2009 6:12 PM

    @BigOx…
    That was a good one.
    But you do have to admit…a MALE CHEERLEADING squad?? Really?? Who is the marketing genius who came up with that grand idea? No need to bring a guy’s wife into this b/c your squad decided it would be a great idea to have male cheerleaders.
    Honestly though…I got much respect for the Ravens and how they’ve operated MOST things, but that is flat out, the worst idea EVER. Steely McBeam was pretty damn bad, admittedly coming from a Steeler fan, but the male cheerleader thing is just dumb.
    Send them to Philly and have those lunatics give them a warm welcome LOL.
