Childress says he's learned not to micromanage

I recently was accused of being a micromanager.

I responded by providing the person with specific, detailed, step-by-step instructions as to the correct procedure for shoving it up his ass.

But there are plenty of control freaks out there.  One of them is Vikings coach Brad Childress.

On Wednesday, Childress spoke with Bob Sansavere of the St. Paul Pioneer Press regarding the question of whether the coach micromanages his staff and players.

“[Y]ou certainly have to
have your hands in facets of everything,” Childress said.  “If anything, I’ve learned not
to micromanage
.”

Childress specifically has been accused of being too rigid with quarterbacks like Brad Johnson and Gus Frerotte.

Childress also told Sansavere that the Sunday night issue with Favre has been “overblown,” explaining that “[d]iscussions on the sideline happen throughout sports.”

We agree, and we think the issue wouldn’t have been overblown if Favre had answered the question that way when he was asked about the “heated discussion” after the game.  Instead, Favre ran his mouth about Childress wanting to pull his quarterback, sparking an issue that has dominated NFL news discussion, especially with Minnesota’s next appearance being another prime-time December road game.

And as we’ve previously pointed out, Favre has won this battle.  Whether the Vikings win the war — or even another game — remains to be seen.

Well if Childress is the control freak that you indicate he is, what the hell was he thinking bringing in an insubordinate, coach killing cancer like Favre in in the first place?
I guess everyone will sell their soul for a price, and for Chilly that price was job security and a contract extension.
It goes without saying that things will inevitably implode. Chilly will eventually get fired, and Favre, continuing his scorched earth campaign, will destroy his third team in as many years.

Bert ran his mouth? No kidding?
That was the story, his “heated discussion” was nothing. But you can always count on him to run his mouth. He has his own agenda. You have to wait five years to get into the Hall. That will give some perspective to his career. I think people will realize his stats are the product of playing so many more games than other QB’s. I think he’ll go in as the Ironman, but not as dthe greatest field general, unless he wins another trophy. Or there is a drug scandal and he doesn’t go in at all.

The more Mr. Noodle and his dominatrix talk about this story, the less time they will have to prepare for their next football game. Should they lose (small chance of that happening, it’s the Bears after all), the Viking fans will protest by not buying playoff tickets but the question is, will anyone notice the difference.

Florio, what coaches in the league don’t micromanage? They all do – you have to for job preservation. The top teams are so close in talent that being all-over the fine details can make the difference between a W or a L. Chilly’s problem is that he has a bad case of “foot in mouth” disease and he sweats the small stuff – the stuff he should just walk away from, or deal with at a later time. Big difference between that and micromanaging.
You’re reaching again on this one. If you can rationally explain to me how Parcells, Belichik, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Walsh and Chuck Noll are / were not micromanagers you’ll get the Pulitzer for excellence in sports tabloid writing for 2009. Chilly’s just a dope.

Or the vikings won’t win the super bowl because there at least 5 or 6 better teams in league right now. Philly, SD, Indy, NO, Az and probably Dallas are all better right now. That isn’t before bringing playoffs favre into the equation. People like to say his emotion is a great attribute but it’s what causes him to throw to well covered receivers on virtually every down when its crunch time.

I guess the same applies to qb’s also. Caldwell, Phillips, and all the rest get to sit back and enjoy their status at the expense of the Vikings, who surely had one lousy off night. Don’t count out a Viking comeback.

Thats exactly right. It’s called team discipline. Think anybody in the Patriots organization questions who’s in charge?
    ——-
“Moss is pouting and needs to be babied and defended. Now only does he play when he wants to play, he practices when he wants to practice.”

Your opinion. The “experts” have spoken, and by and large, they don’t share your opinion.
    ——-
“How bout you worry about cleaning your own house before thinking of someone else’s?”

Once I’m of the opinion that Randy Moss is a cancer destroying my team, I’ll be the first one to call for him to be moved out. Won’t matter, because the Patriots organization actually has a backbone, and if they think he’s a problem, they’ll be proactive.

    ______________
What coaches has he “killed”? Mangini? He was on the way out, Favre was a last ditch effort to save his job, and a 5 win improvement wasn’t enough.
Sherman? His poor GM ability did him in. When he was stripped of his GM duites and Thompson came in, nothing short of a Super Bowl would have saved Sherman, and that wasn’t happening with Thompson blowing up the team.
Ray Rhodes? This was the biggest joke of a hiring ever. He was one and done from the beginning.
These are the 3 coaches who have been fired when Favre was their QB. Which one did he kill? I don’t see any, but I did see a coach whose head was being called for last year get a contract extension this year because of the teams’ improvement with Favre. I guess he really killed Childress, too, didn’t he?

If this coach has any knowledge on HOW to plan and execute this game, and expecially has a goal to win a “S” bowl, HOW can he afford to get mad, and stay mad at a player like B/F is ?
He is simply one of the best NFL quarterbacks in NFL history….or just watch him play IF U doubt this.

Childress is an idiot. No one has ever accused him of being an offensive or defensive guru.
Vikes were outcoached and outplayed by Carolina and the Cardinals. But they are good teams, and sometimes you’re going to get outplayed.
Pulling Favre, who is throwing the ball a lot better than Brady, would be totally counterproductive.
Let’s blame Favre if the running game is dead and the O line doesn’t give him time to throw.
Makes as much sense as blaming Adrian for everything.
What should be addressed is why Childress cannot make second half adjustments or get the running game going.
Favre knows a lot more about football than Childress. 3 time MVP, 2 superbowls, eh?

-We don’t get the running game back on track. We are becoming one dimensional. All passing, how does that happen with AD and Taylor?? Starts up front,O line needs to get it together.
-We don’t get back to the basic fundamentals of defense..tackling correctly. We are an embarrassment at times.
-Our all around coaching doesn’t tighten up. Letting Peppers own you all night is a coaching failure, should never happen.
-Get the ball to Harvin. Where are all those plays coach talked about at the beginning of the season to utilize Harvin?? The kid is dangerous, needs his touches.
-Secondary needs to play like pros…not get burned when the other team decides to play chuck it all day. They look pathetic at times.
Geez, seems like alot to work on. Hope they get it together. O line my main concern.

A few things (Vikings fan here):
    1) This is overblown, but I agree with the poster above… I’m not surprised. People get emotional during games just as much as the fans do watching them…
    2) I know Favre is an egomaniac. That’s not news. Quite frankly, I don’t care, neither does anyone else. Favre wants the same Childress and everyone else on the team wants: a ring.
    3) Anyone who has watched the Vikings the last 3 years wants Favre calling the plays. That’s the part that’s overblown the most. Farve is changing the gameplan b/c the gameplan largely sucks. I’m quite fine with that. I wouldn’t mind seeing Peterson run more, but if you don’t notice, teams are still daring the Vikings to pass, so I’m prefectly fine with them passing. Until defenses start consistently dropping back into pass coverage, the Vikings would be wise in passing the ball. This is not rocket science. Take what defenses are willing to give you. If they would rather take their chances with Favre then AP, then go with Favre. When they would rather deal with the run, you will see more runs. I’m just disapointed that they didn’t run AP at Peppers given the fact that he was pretty much ignoring the running lane on that side. Neither Favre nor Childress were willing to do that. I’m not sure why.
    4) Bring on the Bears… I have a feeling that a very frustrated team is going to take some frustrations out on Chicago and prove that they can win on the road, in the cold, out doors, and on National TV.

    Hey PurpleNGold,
Your name indicates that you’re a Vikings fan, and that’s great….but please don’t EVER give Jimmy any credit for anything!
Merry Christmas, everybody! Lay down your swizzle sticks for a few days, OK! Pick up the battle after a break. It’s only a game, guys.

    Hey Pervy
Put down your GI Joe doll, your mother’s calling you for dinner.
Make sure you eat your vegetables so you can grow up to be a man.

    You know Jimmy and Bob
    And Supersucker and
    Shitterson,
    Favre’s sweet Hair and Emoney
    And green&bold and irishgary.
    But do you recall
The most famous PFT douche bag of all?
    MastaFace the brain dead poster
    Always wrote stupid crap
And if you ever read it
You just had to give it back.
All of the other Pack fans
Used to laugh and never had his back
When Pervy trucked his dumb ass
With lots of foul mouthed smack.
    Then one foggy Christmas Eve
    Florio came to Pervy’s hand
Was sick of MastFaces stupid shit
so decided to have him banned.
    Then all the PFT laughed
At how MastaFace fell in Pervy’s noose
But you are going to be remembered forever
As PFT’s all times biggest DOUCHE!!!
    Merry Christmas MastaFace!
