When it comes to Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, former NFL fullback Harry Sydney has a unique perspective. Sydney played with Favre in 1992 as a member of the Packers, and Sydney worked for the Packers as an assistant coach from 1994 through 1999.
On Wednesday night, Sydney visited with our friend Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio, and Sydney made a great observation regarding the cause of Favre’s late-career self-absorption.
“Brett wasn’t always like this,” Sydney said. “I think what happened to Brett was once, unfortunately, his father died, [Brett] lost that guy that could tell him, ‘Man, what the hell are you doing? What are you doing? Think about the big picture. Think about your legacy.’
“There’s confusion in Brett’s head. That has nothing to do with him coming back. If you want to come back, great. If you want to go to Minnesota, great. Of course, there’s loyalty with me being an old Packer, but if you want to do that, fine, but don’t hurt the team. And I think he’s hurting the team.”
Sydney specifically thinks Favre is hurting his team by forcing the focus of the offense to change from a strong running game to a pass-heavy attack, and by taking his recent dispute with coach Brad Childress public.
“I don’t have a problem with the coach telling him to get out and I
really don’t have a problem with Brett saying he wants to play, because
he’s a competitor,” Sydney said. “Those are all good, but you don’t say that in the
press conference to throw your coach under the bus. Players and coaches
will have arguments and disagreements, but you don’t go in your press
conference after the game and throw your coach all the way under the
bus and make the statement that guess what, ‘I’m more powerful than
anybody.’ What message does that send?”
The message isn’t a good one, but now the question is whether Favre and Childress can come together and focus on the task at hand — winning five more games.
And with no one apparently in position to coerce some sense into Favre, Childress and the Vikings need to hope that Favre can figure out on his own that he’s dangerously close to re-confirming everyone’s worst fears about his me-first tendencies.
Sydney is right, and he’s the man.
Brett lost Big Irv, and now he’s got his wife and his agent whispering in his ear, constantly telling him how great he is.
Good article Florio. Merry Christmas. Now take 24 hours to go do family stuff so both of our wives still talk to us on the 26th.
Wow, never thought of that…
Maybe Brett is the one that deserves the snowball fights like these guys…

I hope Brett never retires.
SCHISM!!!!
Schism!
I am a resident of Green Bay, and have been able to listen to Harry Sydney contribute to a 4-6pm radio show 2-4 times a week for what seems like the past 3ish years. He always brings something new to the table, and I have to say I agree with him on this one.
Even in the dark days of summer when the Favre hoopla all came true and he signed with the Vikes, Harry was the voice of reason saying, “can you really blame him, the guy wants to compete.” I value Harry Sydney’s opinion and wish that there were more people that could relate athletes to regular people. after all, that is what they are. I think any person that lost their father who helped them tremendously throughout their life/career whether they are a garbage man or a franchise QB would have their struggles with their identity. Great find on this interview Florio
Chilly reinforced Favre’s me first tendencies throughout the year, now it is coming back and biting him he doesn’t know what to do.
Giving more leeway isn’t a good direction to head.
Childress says he’s learned not to micromanage
Gor a few million a year salary you better be micro managing.
SKOL VIKINGS!
That is a topic that has been talked about up here for years. Harry is one of the hosts on 107.5 The Fan and has brought it up here a lot. Seems this is the first time he’s been on with anyone nationally.
The last time a team with #4 that featured his arm over the ground game that was chugging along was 1997 and it ended with John Elway winning a championship.
Then again, Mr. Kick Ass Offense is no Mike Holmgren…circa mid-1990′s.
He’s a self centered POS! The vikes will collapse with him this year just like the jets did last year….under the weight of this POS’s ego!!!!!!!!!!!!and the tired old arm he has!
What is Syndey’s “interest take”? 5%?
Merry Christmas Mr. Florio.
Have a great one. Looking forward to Chargers – Titans tommorow.
Maybe for X-Mas, Florio will lay off of his Favre hate for a day.
How can anybody have watched the Vikings’ running game over the past month and then have the balls to conclude that Brett is intentionally forcing the focus to be on himself???
Hey Rip Van Winkles – The Vikings’ running game is non-existent. How was your slumber??? You’re missing what the Vikings are missing in 2009 – Matt Birk.
But, oh well, I guess Brett is guilty of something; trying to win
We are so much better than last year.
Thats actually the best answer from an ex-packer player to have played with Brett I’ve read so far.
I find it a bit troubling that PFT/NBC conveniently omitted a very good take from John Madden. I’ll bet if the article blasted Favre, however, it would have been front and center.
In situations like this, I always wonder whether the people that call the shots and have specific agendas actually believe they can shape the news for the masses? What am I talking about? The drive by’s have been doing this since the mid 1970′s – and they hoodwink an awful lotta bodies.
“When you’re a coach and you’re thinking, ‘We’re in a situation where if you start getting beat up, or hit around, I’m going to take you out.’ You talk about it on Wednesday,” Madden said. “(That’s when) you see and kind of take his (Favre’s) temperature.
“But when the score is 7-6? You know Brett Favre, I know Brett Favre. You can’t tell him you’re going to take him out and he’s going to go, ‘OK.’ And he’ll have a glass of milk and some cookies and go sit on the bench and watch the game. That (Sunday) is not the time to do it.”
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/vikings/2009-12-23-john-madden-brett-favre_N.htm?csp=34
The last I looked he had a 104 passer rating and his team is NFC North Champs with a 11-3 record.
If being 11-3,winning the NFC North and a playoff spot is Brett’s way of hurting the team….I’ll take it. Just another guy making a buck off analyzing Favre. It’s getting rather dull.
Its pretty obvious what happened this year. Once Favre heard all of the MVP talk he started to call audibles and destruct. He was all about being a 40 year old MVP so he started calling audibles and tried to inflate his numbers. We got away from what got Favre those epic numbers to begins with and that was run 1st and let Favre throw against cover 1/single coverages. Then the national spot light game came around where Favre could have became the front runner for MVP with a strong performance vs AZ. Then suddenly the Vikings became pass first and abandoned the run early and we fell flat. Got back to running at home and the D fed off the dome energy(i was there, it was rocking) for a win vs the bengals, and then another AZesque performace vs the panthers.
Basically we need to go back to run 1st, we need to play in the playoffs in the dome(we need the #2 seed badly), and then hope we can host the conference game if someone upsets the saints, or at least we get to go to a comfortable dome with turf in New Orleans.
Lets hope Favre realizes he is no longer in the MVP run and we can go back to our run first offense and start doing the things that made us so dominant earlier.
Everyone blaming Favre for the the problems of the Vikings needs to look at Adrian Peterson’s stats.
11/22 vs Seattle: 3.42 yards per carry
11/29 vs Chicago: 3.40 YPC
12/06 vs Arizona: 1.46 YPC
12/13 vs Cincinnati: 3.73 YPC
12/20 vs Carolina: 2.92 YPC
That’s five games in a row that he hasn’t cracked 4 yards per carry in a game. That’s 7 of the last 8 games that he didn’t crack 4 yards per (the only exception being vs the LIONS, which isn’t that impressive). Peterson is either hurt or washed up or slacking off or SOMETHING. Whatever it is, he’s running like Eddie George in the last year of his carreer. And if you don’t remember what Eddie George was like with the Cowboys, well let’s just say that he’s not going to put his stat sheet from that year next to his Heisman.
If Peterson doesn’t improve, the Vikings will be one and done in the playoffs.
florio is either divorced or he does not like women….
no women would put up with a posting on Xmas eve….even a festivus women
florio, have you visited the dark side of the starfish? (be honest my man)
Interesting take, I guess we have all become used to the diva Favre and forgot about the kid from the Falcons.. Happy Holidays everyone!!Even the trolls..
Sydney who? Gotta do what you gotta do to get “hits” on the website Florio. Merry Christmas anyway!!!!!!! Favre has been good to you in 2009.
We will have to listen to Brett cry at least one more time.
I’ve been saying this very thing for the last few years. Harry nailed this on the head. Before Irv passed away, Brett was VERY different in press conferences whenever asked for his opinions regarding available free agents. His answer was always “I’m just a football player. My job is to be the quarterback.” After… it was all about Brett Favre The Man, The Mystery, The Legend. But honestly, I think alot of what the Pack had to deal with can be laid at the feet of Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman as well. These guys when they were in charge completely enabled Brett. They stopped coaching him. No matter how many interceptions he threw it was left as “well that’s just Brett being competitive”. I dunno. I hate the drama queen Brett’s become. Just hate it. But I still I’m thrilled with all the memories. He’s the most fun I’ve ever had watching football. Period. Nothing will change. Even playing for the Vikings. I don’t have to like it. But it is what it is. I just wish some people would realize that it’s ok to be a Packer fan, cherish the memories with Favre and still love what we have in Aaron Rogers.
Once again, everyone is missing out on the obvious which should be the story line: it’s the third quarter, his team was ahead 7 to 6 in a game they needed, and Chili asked him to do something I’ve never seen a coach do in my 40+ years of watching football, i.e. pull the starting QB out of a game.
Chili blinked. He was winning a game, and was willing to concede it when he wasn’t even behind. If I were the owner, I’d fire his ass quick as I could when this season was over, even if I had to eat the new contract.
As for Favre, who cares? Hiring him was just another desperate move by Chili, just to save his ass. He should have addressed the QB issue on this team years ago. Another reason to fire him.
Why does it always have to be some deep seeded emotional link to a individual hampering grown men from making sound decisions? This entire subject has been blown out of proportion…..I am not a GB, nor a Vikings or Farve fan but the attention that this is garnering is bordering on the ridiculous. Slow week on news=lets blow some shit out of proportion for all news outlets.
Merry Christmas all!
Florio you suck. Great time to do an article about a hack that has the nerve to start talking about someones deceased father. And the influence he no longer has, ALLEGEDLY!
The fact that the guy says things like that makes him a leach and an idiot, not to mention ethically and morally wrong.
But whats your excuse pin head. You actually do an article about an interesting take? Its a morally wrong and reprehensible OPINION.
You are usually pretty good with your skewering of morally retarded folks. Now you are worse then this moron.
ON CHRISTMAS EVE no less. Wrong Florio just plain wrong.
Wishing you and your kids a SHITTY HOLIDAY, Because if Favre or his family read this fish wrap you probably ruined thiers.

Florio- this team with the rift, the Favre/Chilly problems and so on…is tied for the 3rd best record in the NFl and has clinched their division.
I think more see you for the muck-raking, glory-hound, hack-reporter you have become, than those that like the garbage you spew. And you hammer Favre, yet you are a far worse evil.
I actually was rooting for a team other than the Viks to win it all. I hope they win and plant that trophy in the place where you generate these stories…

Stay classy, Philadelphia. Also lol@joseph. Simmer down, man! High blood pressure is bad for your health!
@ joseph
I can sense the tears of passion as you type this article. I think immature people, whether they be in their 40s or teens latch on to Favre because he is easy to relate to. I don’t see hows it so mean to say Favre’s dad dying had an effect on his life? Do you think this is untrue?
Why would Childo want to take Favre out so he could “prevent injury.” Based on voting, Favre has the best OLine in the league right? I mean, the whole line is going to the Pro Bowl.
What ever happened to the Lord Favre moniker? Oh, that’s right now that #4 is in purple no need to use that (wink, wink).
While nice to finally see in print, many Packer fans have thought there was a change in Favre after Big Irv died. But that’s not the angle the nut hugging national media would ever care to explore.
We’re so much better than last year. Thanks, Brett.
Gawsh … I hope all this drama and criticism doesn’t make Brent consider retiring.
I agree it’s wrong to deal with this in the media.
However, tons of athletes do it, and they ALL deserve to be called out for it, not just Favre.
But if they all stop (and they should), what will PFT talk about?
1st Merry Christmas to all in Florioland
2nd Harry Sydney is a class act football coach and mentor
3rd Hey Florio his broadcast partner is Chris Havel one of your favs
4th Sydney is the only player to catch touchdown passes from Joe Montanna and Brett Favre
5th Merry Christmas to all even Viking Fans and to all a goodnight
yeah regardless of what way you spin this, the Vikes are 11-4, nearly a lock for the no. 2 spot in the NFC, winners of the NFC north, and are staring at a first round bye and domefield advantage throughout the playoffs.
i think this happens alot more than one might think but because it is Favre, everyone wants to beat a dead horse. really just let the guy be……
the national media has ruined Brett Favre’s legacy, him playing for the jets and then the vikings had little to do with it. so many untrue stories and village idiots running around spreading rumors. seems like some national media outlets might need to do some actual reporting one of these days…..cough(espn)cough.
first off, joseph is an idiot
secondly, why would Brett Favre be on profootballtalk this late on xmas eve?(and what the hell do you mean by christmas eve no less? what does jesus christ’s birthday have to do with the dead of Irv Favre). for all you know Favre has never been to church a day in his life and is not at all religious. after all, he typically is pretty busy sunday mornings.
third, its been 3+ years since his died. if florio cant report on another outlet’s story regarding his deceased father’s affect on Favre’s personality 3+ years later, then when would be a good time. again youre just dumb.
forth, i would just like to remind joseph he is an idiot.
signed,
joseph’s mom
Pervey is like a rat in all this, just taking the crumbs that fall, LOL! Pansy ass mommas boy!
afwiredawg,
to answer your question, regardless of how manly professional football players are they are still affected by real life events. they are human. they have family tragedies, or are even sometimes affected by the death of a teammate. unfortunately you must not own a television or you would have seen that javon walker has done absolutely nothing on the field and has not been the same psychologically since holding a dying teammate and close friend in his arms. we have seen chad ochocinco perform well a week after a close friend and teammate died, but nobody has seen the emotional toll this has taken on chad.
why is it so crazy to think that the passing of favre’s father had a similar and everlasting affect on favre? i guess it would take some brain power to think outside the box before formulating a useless post of which im not sure you have the necessary equipment.
No big deal..he either gets a ring or gags in the playoffs.
Him facing Brady in the SB would be a ratings wet dream for the league. Im looking more forward to Saints-Chargers SB (which would probably be the lowest rated)
Just another guy making a buck off analyzing Favre. It’s getting rather dull.
No..Pervert, the guy actually PLAYED and personally KNOWS Favre, he’s NOT trying to make a buck..after reading all your Viking vomit about Favre the last 17 years, this 180 ass kiss fest is whats become “rather dull”. You don’t know Syndey or Favre , so unless you do, just stop already.
Hey, Florio & crew. Merry Christmas.
Yes and no to Harry Sidney’s observations. No one will question that Favre has made the Viking O more dynamic. Favre started the season as game manager but really developed some great chemistry resulting in offensive explosions not seen since ’99. When you can create an unpredictable offense with explosive results as we saw against the Packer/Lion/Bear who really cares if the plays are sent in or audibles?
Is Brett chafing under the offensive restrictions being imposed by a head coach who is more conservative than OC Darrell Darrell Bevill Bevill? Agree that Brett threw the HC under the bus. And someone will pay.
In the interim it is in everyone’s immediate interest to restore civility and order. Unfortunately, a more predictable run-oriented offense is not a gain for Viking.
Ultimately, the key issue is whether the O line is capable of attaining the blocking ability needed to sustain the offense.
Lets be real here, most all that are bad mouthing Favre are just plain haters. Each place Favre has gone he has helped his coach receive a contract extension and a huge raise.
Go to Manning and tell him they do not want him to check out of a play when he see’s something and see how he would act.
Favre did not blow this all up the media did. Both Favre and Chilly have stated that it is a non issue but the hacks just keep harping on it.
One last thing, If Favre is anything like myself. Favre could give two shits what people think about what he decides to do or why. Most of these clowns would do more by looking in the mirror and trying to fix their dull lives.
First of all, Favre’s legacy is just that. His. It is in the minds of the fan as he has played the game.
Favre’s dad never approached his son like dipwad portrays.
Hurting his team? Please.
It’s Christmas, so I won’t say aything mean about Vikings “fans” being fair weather, or how there is a big schism in the Vikings’ locker room. Nor will I say “I told you so” when it came to Favre: he’ll give some the highest of highs early in the season, but that will only bring about the lowest of lows later on.
Take the good with the bad Vikings fans. Favre is like that electronic football game you begged your parents for as a kid. It looked like the coolest thing ever in the magazine, and was fun for the first few games. But then it got real old real fast and created a schism within your family. A schism no amount of tatortot hotdish could fill and repair.
Well I guess I can’t blame Brett for wanting to win. The running game is terrible and when you run on 1st and 2nd down and get nothing…..you leave everything on Brett’s shoulders. So when they lose it is his fault and not the other players.
So if he has the freedom to call plays he feels will win….so be it. Peyton does it but nobody calls him a diva, Brees does it…no diva there either. So why when Brett does it he is a diva. Chilli has never been a QB in life and doesn’t know the game from Brett’s aspect. Once Brett does retire….no respectable QB will come to Minn because there hands are tied.
Great another part time philosiphizer, just what the world needs.
More obscure ex-Packers trying to get their name in the National spotlight. They’ll say anything.
Why over-complicate it. Maybe Favre is just an a-hole.
where is JOHN MADDENs take on BRETT FARVE being a Self Centered POS??? Is there anyone who’s done MORE to PROMOTE this jackass, than Madden???
I see the Favre trolls hang out here too….
Vikes of ’09 are starting to look a little like the Titans of ’08.
Both teams have many similarities both on offense and defense, from stout physical defensive fronts across-the-board – right down to their lightning quick tailbacks. Many other similarities exist.
Titans ’08 started off 11-1 – Vikes of ’09 started off 10-1. Both teams were considered by many to be the cream of the League at this time.
Then, poof – it all unraveled quite quickly and unexpectedly.
Right at their season’s apex, both teams appeared to run into some heavy turbulence — and each started to tail off quite dramatically when compared to their seemingly long established run of prior successes.
Titans lost 4 of their last 6, one of those losses their first game in the playoffs. Vikes have lost 2 of their last 3, as they try to right the ship.
We’ll see if the Vikes can reel it back in, but the cracks in the armour are starting to show.
And love Favre or hate him (or somewhere in between) — who can really argue with a straight face that Favre’s getting his piehole in front of a mic and going into his “we had a heated discussion” rant was ridiculous and misguided? Really, Brett? Really???
Mark Clayton says it best:
“Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears: All eyes will be on Brett Favre and Brad Childress. How about this irony? Jay Cutler can throw 25 interceptions and isn’t benched. Favre has had an MVP season, but because he’s audibled against the wishes of Childress, Favre has almost been benched three times this year. Amazing. All Favre has done is won 11 games, been among the top five candidates for MVP and helped Childress earn a three-year contract extension”
While there’s a few fans who still believe every word Gump***says, now another NFL city is seeing what many Packers fans have seen for several years prior to his departure.
He was having a rather nasty debate with the Packer brass about Randy Moss, etc. which I’m sure didn’t endure him to them. Mike Sherman and Ray Rhodes(post Holmgren) basically let Favre run the show. Mike McCarthy was part of Rhodes staff and wouldn’t have any of it when he came back as head coach. When Favre followed McCarthy’s coaching, he had a good year until it ended with yet another interception against the Giants. Then came the phony tearful “retirement”, saying he was “through”. Then the forced unretirement, trade, retirement, unretirement, signing, and trouble again. It was clear now he couldn’t run the show in Green Bay anymore so he essentially lied his way out of Green Bay, and the Jets, so he could meet up with his “pals”(and probably soon to be former pals) in Minnesota. Sorry to say this because I was once a deep admirer of Gump in the era Harry Sydney is talking about, but no more. Now the Vikings are stuck with him. Good luck, or better yet, you get what you deserve.
***Gump, as in Forrest Gump. Watch the movie again and see the many parallels to BF.
Harry is right on, though anybody with a functioning brain knew all this already.
Wow Joseph! Holy smokes.
Florio, Harry Sydney and Big Irv . . . .the three wisemen cometh. Merry Christmas, y’all.
Harry who? Why do we care what he thinks? My great aunt met Brett in 1995, if you would like to hear her fascinating revelations on the Favre psyche let me know and I can give you her phone number.
This “Favre changed when Irv” died has been an urban ledged for a few years now in WI. All you need to do is look at this:
While Irv was alive: Favre was addicted to Vicoden, an alcoholic, and a womanizer
After Irv died: Favre has not touched a drop of liquor and is a family man who no longer goes “clubbin”
Yeah, he sure has changed for the worse (rolls eyes)
purpleloki did your great aunt play and coach football in the NFL? No. Well there’s a big difference between the two.
So many psyschologists…
Being a Packer fan, the Queens self-destructing in the final quarter of the season is very sweet indeed. I can only imagine that being a Queens fan must be something akin to being a battered woman: No matter how good things look right now, there is always heartbreak and another vicious beating just waiting around the corner.
Don’t overlook the Vikes. Don’t take them for granted that they will fall apart. Don’t think Favre has nothing left. Don’t think the running game can’t work. This team is better than last years and I for one will not be betting against them until the Super Bowl.

This guy’s own mother has never heard of him, who cares what he thinks? Second, Ive seen on here that it’s not all Favre’s fault, Peterson is partially to blame. I’ve been thinking about Peterson’s not so great past two months. My theory is that maybe him getting threatened by being benched may have him to a point of being over cautious.
Pretty desperate of PFT to go looking for any negative comment on farve possible. This site is starting to lose the appeal it once had.

Nice.
And for the other bone head, Not mad just disgusted. No BP issues just
thought I would be the morale compass during this holiday season.
Perspective is always nice.
Lost in this debate is this. Why can’t the coach play a hunch and put in a relief QB to maybe throw the other team off the game plan. Tavaris Jackson goes in and maybe the Vikings win the game. If Joe Torre went out to the mound with Roger Clemens winning 1-0 in the 7th inning Clemens would have come out. He might have kicked the water cooler in half and shoved Don Mattingly, but he would have come out of the game.
If Mike McCarthy would have put Aaron Rodgers in the game in overtime against the Giants in the championship game I think Green Bay would have won. Favre was frozen solid and looked like deer in the headlights. But no, Brett can’t leave any game no matter what the consequences.

No wonder Brett wanted to be a Viking…. you Packer posters are a fine example of WI. Why would a Hall of Famer want to be associated with you mental midgets?? Packer fans are the cancer that runs wild on PFT…glad to be the chemo that fights you!
Nah I still like Brett Favre. How can’t I? It’s largly because of him that I got to celebrate a Super Bowl win. A lot of great memories watching that guy play. I just don’t believe he has what it takes to get a team to the Super Bowl anymore. There is 10 years of evidence to back up that opinion.
Favre is going to audible. That is not going to stop. The guy thinks he can still make every throw at any time in the game. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. The last play for the Packer offense in 2007 was an audible to a pass.
