John Carney won’t be leaving the Saints after all. But he can’t kick for them again this season, either.
The 21-year veteran has accepted a position as a kicking consultant with the Saints. The team apparently valued his knowledge and mentor skills with young starter Garrett Hartley so much that they offered him a job to stick around.
“I know that
this means that he’s going to be with us for the remainder of the year
and that he can’t kick for us or another team for the remainder of the
year,” Saints coach Sean Payton said in comments distributed by the team.
Perhaps Payton was so clear on the rules because of the odyssey of Eagles coaching intern Matt Nagy in training camp. The team tried to put Nagy on the roster, but the league closed the door on a potential loophole regarding roster limits and didn’t allow it.
It’s unclear if Carney will try to return to the league as a player in 2010 or continue a coaching career.
Good, always nice to see the Saints starting to do things the right way and taking care of their own.
haha
Merry Christmas PFT Planet and thanks for working on Christmas eve posting updates guys !
21 years as a kicker??? I don’t think he’s doing it for the money.
“that he can’t kick for…another team for the remainder of the year”.
I guess they didn’t want the Cowboys or the Packers picking him up for the playoffs and it may be that he can fill in if Hartley gets hart.
Carney is a class act. Good luck with your new title .
(But if it comes down to It I hope the Eagles Win)
Payton just wanted to give him a chance to get a SB ring with the rest of the team.
“Good, always nice to see the Saints starting to do things the right way and taking care of their own.”
No. They’re paying him money (i.e. a “consultant” job) not to kick for a team like the Cowboys or Packers that may be looking for a dependable veteran kicker for the playoffs.
after a certain point these guys’ bodies fail them. sounds like a good deal for man and club.
@Bob Loblaw
Those two things aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.
Probably, they dont want to let anyone go who could tell another team anything about their playbook.
See: Suisam, Shawn.
Good smart move prior to a serious playoff run.
what would a kicker tell another team? have you seen a kicker practice? it often is not even with the team. here is the only information a kicker could possibly tell the cowboys about the redskins: “hey tuna, i couldnt kick from the right hash when i played for them either”
He failed the Giants miserably in the playoffs while with them last year in the playoffs against the Eagles. Still love the guy though, class act. Hope he does well with his new position.
