Matthew Stafford lands on IR

The first overall pick in the 2009 draft won’t be finishing out his rookie season on the Lions’ active roster.

Instead, quarterback Matthew Stafford has been placed on injured reserve, according to Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com.

Per Kowalski, Stafford will undergo “minor surgery” next week on his knee.

The move frees up a roster spot for the final two games of the regular season.

Hey, lets throw the franchise out to the wolves for his rookie season so hes got gimp knees the rest of his career. It’s not like we have 80 Million invested in him or anything….

Great, now there is NO WAY the Lions make the playoffs!

they shouldve went with culpepper all season anyways and i can guarantee u they wouldve won more games if thats the whole point of playing the actual games is to win. i never can understand sitting down the guy that gives u a better chance to win than someone who may one day be good.

You can GUARANTEE we would have? Interesting, apparently you’ve never watched him play this year (or last). The fact he’s been benched in favor of the 3rd stringer for whom the coaching staff has no faith should tell you all you need to know. Probably better you speak on something you actually understand in the future.

    pullpecker sucks.
38-39 viking with moss (and btw, the vikes had a good OL, TE, RBs)
like 5-17 viking or other (not lion) without moss
    like 0-10 as a lion
he never had much and he has nothing now. he isnt any good. but he sure has ardent worshippers!

Did you see any of the games that Daunte played? That guy is pathetic. He made Dan Orlovsky look like Johnny Unitas. Playing Stafford was the right move. Drafting Stafford was where they went wrong.

Have you even watched any Lions Games? Culpepper was god awful and was replaced by Drew Stanton.

It’s going to be a short career for Stafford. Good thing he got his money, because he’s going to have an old mans body before he can get out of Detroit.

Matthew Stafford is a good QB. He could be a good QB for years to come. I think he learned a whole lot this year and developed some chemistry with his receivers. Problem is he could also be another David Carr. Plenty of talent, but no offensive line and poor pass protection schemes. Carr could have been great, i truly believe so, if he had the line the Texans have now. Hopefully Stafford doesn’t end up with that same problem. New GM may mean smart draft picks like OL. As a Redskins fan, i know all about bad picks year in and year out…

Lions keep burning out QB’s because the offensive line is terrible, and they are always in passing situations, so DL’s can just go crazy. They should have drafted along the line first, offensive and defensive. The problem is, no regime is interested in building for long term success, instead looking for the quick fix (i.e. QB and WR and maybe 1 other offensive weapon, either TE or RB) instead of building out from the trenches.
You could put manning, harrison (in his prime) and wayne behind the line in detroit and still probably not win more than a game or 2 then they have. and you’d probably have manning injured for 25% of the time.

Was Matthew Stafford really worth the #1 pick anyways? I don’t think so. Lions were better off trading back a few picks and taking Josh Freeman around 15. Killing your salary cap with top draft picks is not the way to rebuild. This year though there is an exception to this. Ndamukong Suh reminds me of a lot of great players. Reggie White comes to mind. If I could get the #1 pick in 2010, I’d be taking him.

He should have landed on IR to begin the season.

  14. dewalt2990 says: Dec 24, 2009 3:39 PM

His shoulder was the reason he missed a couple games(so the team says). So if he can get whatever knee problem he has, taken care of also, good deal.

  15. Stafford's Johnson says: Dec 24, 2009 3:46 PM

The Lions put him on IR because he had nothing left to prove the rest of the year. He would have been sore and they wanted to see what they have in Stanton so they took him off the active roster so they can put another crappy DB in uniform. Stafford has shown that he at least has the ability to be worth the #1 pick. You can say they should’ve traded back but no one would’ve made a reasonable trade offer. They took the clearly best QB in the draft and he looks like he should be starting for them for the next decade (assuming he doesn’t get killed by their sieve of an O line).

Scrapdawg12…the Lions would have traded back. Unfortunately, no team wanted to be burdened with the financial ramifications of the #1 pick. The pussycats had to take him. They had to roll the dice on him. I think that he will be fine with more experience and a couple more solid drafts. They must figure out some way to get him better protection. I hope that they realize that this team needs to be built from the inside out (i.e. the trenches) instead of the outside in (i.e Matt Millen approach…WRs).

I smell an escalator clause being ducked.

  18. leon kinne says: Dec 25, 2009 2:53 AM

it is a new techneek of the teams who’s season is over to protect their best players or ones they want to trade after season by puting them on IR
