Moss answers questions, for a change

We've recently pointed out that Patriots receiver Randy Moss somehow has managed to avoid making himself genuinely available to the media for questions, and also to avoid the fines that are supposed to attach to such behavior.

Today, however, he has chosen to answer a few questions.

But, true to form, he answered only the questions he wanted to answer.

In an interview with Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, Moss opted not to talk about being sent home 15 days ago for showing up late to work.  He also chose not to talk about his performance against the Panthers four days later, or about his strident post-game remarks from Sunday after a win over the Bills.

He agreed to talk only about the recent habit of the team's offense to struggle in the second half of a given game.

"I don't know, that's unlike us.  I don't know the answer," Moss said.  "We come in and make adjustments, then we go out on the field.  I don't know, I guess we shoot ourselves in the foot, or we start sputtering.  I don't know what it is.  I think from a team standpoint, if we have a good first half, we want to have a good second half, but things never happen.

"It really hurts for us not to come out in the second half and not do what we're supposed to do.  But to answer your question, I really don't know what it is.  I really don't. . . .  I don't [expletive] know.  I really don't."

He also expressed concern that the situation hasn't been resolved at this late stage of the season.  "The best thing is to keep fighting and keep making our halftime adjustments and go out there and see if we can make it happen," Moss said.  "But to be honest, I don't know what the hell it is."

Though Moss isn't a master of nuance, maybe his implied message is that he thinks it's the quality of the halftime adjustments on offense, which falls on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

So maybe they need Charlie Weis to come back more than anyone realizes.

And we still think it would make sense to add him to the staff on a consulting basis.  The only problem is that we think he envisions himself as a candidate not only for offensive coordinator positions elsewhere, but also for some of the coming head-coaching positions, like the one in Buffalo.

"So maybe they need Charlie Weis to come back more than anyone realizes."

Open secret: Charlie Weis is not the offensive guru the media (and Tom Brady's skill) made him out to be.

The Patriots could bring back Weis on offense and Crennel on defense, and they would still have the same problems, because the real issue is that their last four offseasons have been disastrous from a talent viewpoint. There's a reason New England keeps stocking veterans who are on their last legs: their young guys aren't any good.

Judging by the ability of Moss to not be honest or answer any questions I would say he has a bright future in politics after his career

  3. stanjam says: December 24, 2009 3:38 PM

Sorry, but I think that saying Moss is calling out the coaches in this interview is an incredible stretch. He genuinely seems like he doesn't know what the problem is, and that he places the blame on the offense as a whole, perhaps including the coaches. "I don't know, I guess we shoot ourselves in the foot, or we start sputtering," and "The best thing is to keep fighting and keep making our halftime adjustments and go out there and see if we can make it happen."

This doesn't sound like he is blaming the coaches, but the execution of the adjustments the coach is giving them.

I agree though, they need Charlie, and I would love to see him back.

So please stop trying to put words into Moss' mouth, and try to make it like he is blaming others, especially coaches. He has been nothing but a great example of a team player since being in New England. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be here. The reason he doesn't address the issues you mention is precisely what you are trying to do to him, make him out to be the big, bad, discontented diva. He isn't TO, and no amount of wishing will make that so.

Why does anyone care if he answers questions or not? And if he choses to not talk about a particular subject, how does that make him any different than 99% of all of the other players that do the same thing week in and week out?

  5. RedGoneWILD says: December 24, 2009 3:48 PM

Consult with them about what? The proper angle to record opposing coordinators signals? How to avoid detection?

Weis is only effective when he knows what the defense is doing before calling the plays.

NFL has their nose so far up Kraft's ass it's starting to smell like Velveeta cheddar cheese.

If there is a fine for players who don't speak to the media, then fine ALL the players, not a select few!

Patriots are not the NFL darlings anymore.

That title is currently being held by the Colts and Saints.

So, fine the SOB and keep it honest and unbiased! Commish you stink!

    stanjam,

Florio will quit "trying to put words in Moss's mouth" when you quit trying to fit every single piece of manmeat in YOUR mouth. In other words, NEVER.

    LMFAO!!!!!

"There's a reason New England keeps stocking veterans who are on their last legs: their young guys aren't any good."

You don't know what you're talking about. Many of the young players are excellent. However Belichick's offense and defense are either the most complicated in the league or very close to it. It often takes new players 2 or 3 years to really become comfortable and understand where they are supposed to be and what their assignments are on any given play. The vets the Pats lost last offseason all knew exactly where they were supposed to be all the time.

The rookies and young guys who have sometimes looked lost this year and been out of position will be fine with a bit more experience. And in fact the speed of the younger guys makes the defense much better in some ways. They just need the game reps and that only comes with time.

  9. yarlmak says: December 24, 2009 4:05 PM

Moss said nothing that would cause a reasonable man to infer that he blames the adjustments for second half struggles. In fact, at the end of the article he is quoted saying that maybe they lose focus or lack execution after the half- a quote that was conveniently not referenced in Florio's post. If Florio is used to relying on this kind of inductive reasoning to make legal arguments, I can see why his career has evolved from advocate to gossip monger.

WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK WEIS IS SUCH AN OFFENSIVE GURU?

Don't get mad at him if he doesn't talk to morons like you that flip and misconstrue every word he says, Florio.

Its always funny when you try and create a story like when moss was dogging it to go the vikings.

He also wants to play in Minnesota so he said those things about the halftime adjustments.

You young pups have a lot to learn about Charlie Weis. Try researching what Weis did as the OC of the Jets from '97-'99 before opening your trap. Here, let me help...

The Jets were the 27th ranked offensive unit in the NFL the year prior to Weis coming aboard as the new OC. With Neil O'Donnell and Glenn Foley (no less) as his quarterbacks, Weis improved the Jets offensive ranking to 12th in his first year.

The following season Weis guided Vinny Testaverde to a career year with 29 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions as the Jets improved to 5th in the NFL in offense on their way to the AFC Championship game. A few years prior to this, Bill Belichick had Vinny for 5 seasons and couldn't come close to those numbers, as Vinny averaged 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions under little Bill.

Weis work as a position coach is equally impressive as he coached up both Curtis Martin, Terry Glenn and Ben Coates to some of their best seasons ever.

N.E. Patriots: Zero Lombardi Trophies since they took the cameras away. And the team keeps getting worse.

Obvious conclusion: Can't win it all without cheating. LOL.

  23. PolegoJim says: December 24, 2009 6:47 PM

RJgreen and StevieMo - visualize me laughing in derision at your tired response. You mean after their 3,3,3 Championships. So you too expect them to win every year like we do!!! Great to hear.

Their undefeated regular season, and Super Bowl appearance came AFTER the horrific scandal. They go through the same ebb and flow of all other teams.

I do have an original idea for Randy Moss - how about running routes for a change???

So, Moss opted not to talk about games or weeks past. Wow, there is a shocker. Really? Anyone who knows anything about this team knows they are always looking to and talking about their most current opponent. They don't talk about past opponents, win or lose. Is anyone making a big deal out of the fact that Tom Brady does not want to talk about the Bills or Panthers? Simple answer: no. Stop being a racist Florio.

    @PolegoJim

The point is the team not only hasn't won a SB without cheating but they also have been declining and the coaching staff has been getting out of dodge. I heard a Pats fan say that they are looking like the Pete Carroll Pats I think they are looking more like the Bill Belichick Browns.

    ----------------------------------------------
Really Bernard? I mean you realize you are attempting to call Mike "37 posts about the Rooney Rule in one day" Fkorio a racist. Never mind the obvious fallacy of your statement, looking at the article itself there is no sense of race, in fact an individual not familiar with football(say from Tahiti) would not know the race of any of the men described in the article.

Race is still a big problem in our country today, but it does not help to have people like you try to use the race card at any opportunity that presents itself.

  36. Rasputin says: December 25, 2009 2:00 AM

The playcalling has been infantile all season - predictable to almost painful-to-watch levels. The use of personnel is almost as bad - Watson/Baker are barely involved in the passing game.

Weis may or may not be the answer, but the guy calling the offense for the Pats now needs to be dumped over the side.

FLORIO MENTIONS SOMETHING POSITIVE ABOUT MOSS FOR A CHANGE

We've recently pointed out that Florio is obsessed with crapping all over Randy Moss.

Today, however he chose to mention a positive event in Moss's day, a session of answering reporter's questions.

But, true to form, Florio framed the positive event as negatively as humanly possible, and continued his childish vendetta of peeing weakly (in full squat, like a little girl) on his personnal white whale.

    Cheers, BostonTim
