Revis is named Jets MVP

Jets coach Rex Ryan recently stumped for cornerback Darrelle Revis to win the NFL’s defensive player of the year award.

Though it remains to be seen whether Ryan’s comments will enable Revis to overcome Packers cornerback Charles Woodson, Ryan’s pitch sent a powerful message to the locker room.

Revis has been voted the Jets’ MVP for the 2009 season.

The Jets announced today that Revis has secured the honor, which is named for former Jets running back Curtis Martin.

The Jets also announced that running back Thomas Jones received the Dennis Byrd Award for most inspirational player, tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson was named recipient of the Marty Lyons Award for community service, long snapper James Dearth won the Kyle Clifton Good Guy Award, and linebacker David Harris was named the team’s recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award.

The team has not yet named a winner of the Joe Namath I Wanna Kiss You I Couldn’t Care Less About The Team Struggling Award, but our vote would go to receiver Braylon Edwards for trying to plant his lips on a deep ball thrown by quarterback Mark Sanchez earlier this month.

Slow day huh…could this even be mildly considered news? Can’t wait to hear who the Bills name as their Special Teams POY.

They appear to have problems with timing of things. First, they think the Super Bowl is in the second week of the season, then they think they’re out of the playoffs when they weren’t, now they’re naming a team MVP with two weeks left in the season.

If he’s recently murdered dogs by electrocution he should also be given the Ed Block Courage Award..

Did Rex get the “I Never Met a Buffet Table that I Didn’t Like” Award?

I’ve stolen this from the “Mother Ship”
Woodson (Green Bay): The 12-year veteran has 70 tackles, two sacks, eight interceptions, two touchdowns, 15 passes defensed and four forced fumbles.
Revis (New York Jets): The 24-year-old former Pitt standout is drawing rave reviews. He has 49 tackles and six interceptions, and his 36 passes defensed.
My opinion, Woodson is the best defensive player in the league.

The Steelers were sitting there at No. 15 already to take Revis and the Jets traded up to 14 at the last minute. Boy, would the Pitt hometown product look good today in black and gold. I just Googled that punt return he had as a senior. That is one of the great plays in Pitt history.

“The team has not yet named a winner of the Joe Namath I Wanna….”
You stay classy Florio. When other organizations remain professional and provide news and analysis of the NLF environment, you go that extra mile to become the equivalent of the average trash-talking NLF player- bush league, pointless and often embarrassing.
But it gets you webhits and that matters much more than anything quality-oriented.

So he recognizes Revis as the team MVP and didn’t even know his team has a remote chance of making the playoffs…Wow!!!!!

Why are the Jets announcing their MVP two weeks before the season is over?
I guess to get a little attention drawn to Revis as league’s defensive MVP.
    That won’t work.

You mean the greatest QB ever drafted and the Franchize QB of the future didnt win the award? Was it that 5 int game against Buffalo the sealed it?

Is the season over yet? Isn’t this premature?

Darrelle Revis, he deserves a lot of awards. The Jets in order to improve should trade him away for a 1st round pick. A corner back will not win you games. They need a lot more defensive help than a cornerback. Trading him to Philadelphia for Sheldon Brown and a 2nd and a 4th round pick would help the team more than just Revis alone.

Woodson or Revis, i like Revis better even though Woodson is having a great year I think Revis has had tougher match ups but you couldn’t go wrong with either player.

Are you serious? Teams don’t trade away shutdown corners, especially when they’re only 24 years old. Do you have any idea how valuable it is to have a corner who can be counted on to play one on one against every team’s best WR? This frees the safety up to defend the run or sit in the zone, it changes the entire defensive scheme for the better. Sheldon Brown and a 2nd round pick can’t cover Randy Moss. Revis can.

as a packer fan i would like to say one thing, screw you jets nation. you and your awesome super talented, shutdown corner who you freakin sniped from the pack, and instead we end up with friggin A bustin’ justin….how lame is that.
but honestly this guy is making a real push for def. mvp. he may be the best COVER corner in the league this year, but my man charles woodson may still be a step ahead of him..

Revis can be counted on against every team’s best WR? He got toasted by Ted Gin Jr. (who toasted no one else) – the third-best of the Dolphins’ mediocre group of receivers.

THE JETS NEED ALOT MORE DEFENSIVE HELP???? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT???????? I am a Jets season ticket holder and I will admit the Jets need alot of help, but on defense?? Really?? #1 defense against the pass, #1 scoring defense, #11 against the run, # 1 OVERALL DEFENSE. Seems we can really use more defensive help right??? Say what you will about NY sports fans but we at least know what were talking about. MORON!!!!!!!

Another “Football fan” who watches sportscenter and thinks he knows it all. I wouldnt expect a Dolphins fan to understand coverage shells. The play you are talking about, the jets were in an Inverted Cover 2 where Jim Leonhard was man up with Ginn and Revis dropped into a cover 2 shell and was not supposed to be covering ginn. Going into last week Revis has allowed 254 recieving yards against Randy Moss(twice), Terrel Owens(twice), Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Marques Colston and just held Roddy White to 33 yds. If your best arguement against revis is the Ginn TD, then you have no clue what you are talking about.
