In an interview with Michael Eisen of Giants.com, Carolina’s Steve Smith predictably is asked questions about New York’s Steve Smith.
“Actually my real name isn’t Steve Smith,” the player whose real name isn’t Steve Smith said. “That is the name I go by — that is the name by dad has and people called me that since I was a little boy. But my mom and my wife, all my family, call me by my birth name — that is really what I go by outside of football.”
But he wouldn’t say what his real name is. “You have to talk to my mommy on that one,” he said. “I only really give it to my friends; I don’t give it to strangers. You learn that at a young age.”
Per NFLPA records, Smith’s first name is listed as “Stevonne.” But his last name is listed as Smith.
It would be wild if his last name was actually “Ochocinco.”
And thanks to the reader who pointed out the interview for us.
His name also isn’t Steve Smith.

I don’t think it’s fair to call the NYG Steve Smith “the real Steve Smith” yet. After all this is only his third year in the league. But he’s had more than a few good games! Consider his role in the SB run of 2007. Also consider that fact that he is beating the Carolina Steve Smith in total yards, despite the fact that NY has 2 other WRs with over 700 yards total, and a TE with over 500 yards! Yeah, that’s a little better than “a few good games!”

Even though I’d have to say that you’re somewhat accurate with this observation, I’d like to point out that the media tends to excuse caucasian athletes for undesirable behavior that AA athletes never get away with. Look at Brett Favre and T.O. They are the same type of teammate. In fact, T.O. is a better teammate this year than Brett “Don’t you know who I am” Favre.
By the way, caucasian players like Jared Allen and Chris Cooley, are constantly trying to push their image-driven agendas. Which personally, I don’t care if ANY athlete does it. It’s just funny that we (white America) only find it distasteful when an athlete of color does it.
