Report: Mangini has "less than 50 percent chance" of staying

With so much speculation regarding the future of coach Eric Mangini in Cleveland, Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Mangini’s chances of returning are 50 percent, at best.

Glazer says that new team president Mike Holmgren wants an offensive-minded head coach, and that Mangini’s personality doesn’t mesh with Holmgren’s.

“I can’t see those guys matching,” Glazer said, whose words have added credibility now that he’s 40, as of yesterday.  (Happy birthday, Jay.  Now go get your f–king shine box.)

But Glazer’s report is somewhat contradicted by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who says that Holmgren has a “soft spot” for Mangini, that Holmgren is hesitant to replace a head coach after one year on the job, and that it’s not a “foregone conclusion” that Mangini will be fired.  (Schefter’s report also contradicts the stuff that John Clayton has been reporting about the situation — yet another in-house Bristol conflict that likely won’t be acknowledged by the powers-that-be.)

We’ll all know more once Holmgren officially takes the job.  Per Glazer, the Big Show will meet the media on January 4, the day after the curtain drops on the 2009 season.

I put the odds of Mangini staying at less than 1 percent

Wow crack reporting on that one Glazer. I think the whole football watching world knows that Ratgini’s chances of coaching the Browns next year is “less than 50%”.
In fact I think everyone knows its virtually certain he’s gone.

PREDICTION: 2010 Quarter 1 maximum protection pads sales plummet.

Do people really think that the Browns are terrible because of Eric Mangini? Wasn’t the idea to give him a couple of years to develop the team and then reevaluate?
If the Browns were going to fire any coach that didn’t produce success this year, they might as well have gone coach-less the entire year, because it wasn’t going to happen. I’m no Mangini fan, but the Browns are being fickle.

Mangini is known for being a liar, untrustworthy, arrogant, a control freak, immature and hated by his players and team employees. There is absolutely no chance anyone not connected to Mangini would keep him around. Mangini is a cancer that needs to be removed. Holmgren is knowledgeable and smart enough to see the damage Mangini has done to the Browns organization. Give Holmgren a choice of every college and professional football coach to choose from and Mangini would be last or darn close to last on his list.
The problem with Mangini is not what he does on the field but what he does off the field. He is simply a disgrace as a human being who has no respect for anyone.

This could be the worst report ever.
What is half of him going to stay? Either he stays of goes, 100% of him. the Browns aren’t splitting him in half. Come on!

He actually got paid for providing that information/observation? My cat could have provided that insight.
Here’s one for free: Jim Caldwell’s chances of returning as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts next year are better than 50%.
Just call me the “NFL Insider.”

  8. Hauschild says: Dec 27, 2009 12:54 PM

50% chance prognostication by a talking head.
The whole issue is how ManGenius got the job to begin with.

They hired Holmgren because the current regime wasn’t demonstrating enough success on the field. Since the current regime is essentially Mangini, the problem is how do you bring a team in line with your vision while keeping the architect of the past around? Mangini was the defacto gm there. If he were simply a coach the decision by Holmgren to stick with him would be easier. But he wasn’t really just the coach. So you have a situation with two divergent philosophies directing the team if he stays around. That just doesn’t play.

WOW great story less then 50% what a joke

  13. Rob Noxious says: Dec 27, 2009 1:14 PM

Instead of saying “Jay Glazer… reports…”
Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say “Jay Glazer… SPECULATES,” since that’s all it is – speculation, not a report, since it is not based on any facts.

  14. Kevin C says: Dec 27, 2009 1:17 PM

There is a 100% chance that Glazer is a moron

  15. manginiwithcheese says: Dec 27, 2009 1:19 PM

    Bye bye Fatgini.

  16. Dawgpound2009 says: Dec 27, 2009 1:44 PM

And the kicker is who might be Ratgini’s replacement … According to the ESPN rumor mill, speculation is that Marty Mornhinweg might the person that replaces the most likely soon to be departed EM. A man with a 5-27 record in the NFL? That would leave Browns fans screaming for Romeo Crennel’s return lol

  17. Favre On HGH says: Dec 27, 2009 1:45 PM

I would say 50% chance Mangini is unemployed on January 4th .
I would say 50% chance Mangini is unemployed on January 5th .

I would think Holmgren wants to keep mangina around one more year just to get a sense of what talent he has on the team. Then, once he knows what kind of talent he has, he can get a real coach that can work with that talent. in addition, monetarily, it makes sense to keep it around until he can be more definitely fired “for cause”

  19. BorisBulldog says: Dec 27, 2009 3:30 PM

    Mike?
How’s that D minded HC working out in PIT working with an all O team?

  20. Dawgpound2009 says: Dec 27, 2009 5:06 PM

So are Ratgini’s chances of surviving now up to .0001 percent with a victory over the Silver and Black ? Maybe the Raiders would like Derek Anderson to go with their collection of Ex-Browns QB’s? It must be our way of thanking them for Rob Ryan?

  21. Route36West says: Dec 27, 2009 6:16 PM

    Florio are you an idiot?
If ESPN wanted everyone to agree on the same thing they would hire just 1 reporter so no one would disagree.
Thats the whole point of having multiple analysts/reporters. So that they can get different opinions on the same thing.
Not every “Power that Be” tries to force their opinions on their workers. Not everyone has a Florio sized ego.

  22. tobago says: Dec 27, 2009 6:46 PM

Mangini may end up staying with certain restrictions(acquisition of talent, and the draft) put on him.

  23. kelevra says: Dec 27, 2009 8:19 PM

As a Browns fan, I do hope they give Mangini more than a season. This team has really come around starting with the Detroit game, that’s without some key defensive and offensive players.
Quite frankly, nobody was going to succeed their first year in Cleveland.
As for comments about Mangini not fit to run a team, we’ve won three in a row, played the Chargers as tight as anyone in the league this year, and came within a last second play against Detroit. Albeit the wins are not against the league’s elite, (that includes your team Steeler fans, swallow that) all around we are playing better football, and it shows.
To me, it just doesn’t make any sense to can him after one year – should have never hired him if that was the plan all along.
Not saying he’s definitely the answer, saying he could be.
