Ravens notified of trade request by Troy Smith

Ravens quarterback Troy Smith seems like a thoughtful, talented young player that could have a long career in the NFL.  But he could work on his timing.

Earlier this month, Smith gained attention for his dance steps after his touchdown gave the Ravens a 48-3 lead over Detroit.

Now his agent Ralph Cindrich is making it known through his Twitter account that Smith has notified the Ravens that he wants a trade, just six days before the Ravens try to clinch a playoff spot.

Ravens QB Troy
Smith, Ohio State alum, native + Heisman winner wants playing time. Ravens notified. Will seek trade after play offs, SB run,” Cindrich writes.

Smith has shown promise when given the chance to play and was likely to open the 2008 as the Ravens starter over Joe Flacco if not for being sidelined by a rare form of tonsillitis.

It’s unclear what kind of market Smith would generate and if the Ravens would be motivated to trade a backup quarterback they trust.

And if the Seahawks do sign Eric Decostas, it would be very easy for them to get their QB of the future via trade with the Ravens.
If that does come to fruition, it would be a coincidence; Troy Smith got his first start against the Seahawks.

  2. Chris says: Dec 28, 2009 2:14 PM

They should trade him to the Vikings for Sage Rosenfels.

  3. Kev29 says: Dec 28, 2009 2:16 PM

Isn’t Smith a restricted free agent after the season? I guess this is notification that they don’t want the Ravens to match any offers he gets – but what’s the point of that, wouldn’t that potentially lower offers from other teams?
Maybe Smith and his agent look around at QBs on offer this offseason and thinks he could have a crack at the Browns, Redskins or Panthers job.

  4. mfclock says: Dec 28, 2009 2:18 PM

    send him to denver

  5. howiseeit says: Dec 28, 2009 2:20 PM

Through his Twitter account — times sure have changed. Cindrich sounds like a moron. Whats this guy worth — a sixth or a seventh? He hasn’t pushed Flacco at all yet he feels that he will be a better option for another team than their current starter or maybe even better than someone drafting a McCoy, Bradford, Tebow or other hotshot out of college? Never bite the hand that feeds you.

  6. Nick says: Dec 28, 2009 2:20 PM

I hope the Ravens do trade him, and can get a 3rd rounder for him. They used a 5th, so anything better than that is good but a 3rd would be great.
I can totally understand him wanting to be traded, but the timing of this was pretty stupid.

  7. TeHDruiD says: Dec 28, 2009 2:20 PM

The Browns should give 1 of their 3 5th rounders for him

  8. af16 says: Dec 28, 2009 2:21 PM

The point is, Kev29, he wants to be a starting quarterback, and he’s not going to be one in Baltimore.

  9. rjwill says: Dec 28, 2009 2:26 PM

cleveland would be a good fit for him, good marketing ploy for the browns too. not sure if he’s an nfl quaterback but if you can get him on the cheap why not let him compete for a starting job in cleveland? (assuming you could work a deal everyone is happy with)

  10. golongboyee says: Dec 28, 2009 2:26 PM

He is not starter material period……if any team picks him up, they truly are suckers….he is an int machine mainly because his arm strength is suspect…..just cannot make a number of NFL throws!

  11. Rob Noxious says: Dec 28, 2009 2:32 PM

Could the timing of this combined with the “ohio state alum – native” wording be aimed at the Browns and new president Mike Holmgren??

  12. Warpstone says: Dec 28, 2009 2:33 PM

    Al Davis likes Heisman winners…

  13. bornman3 says: Dec 28, 2009 2:36 PM

If Smith is behind this Twitter post, than he is a selfish boob. If it is Cindrich, than he is an absolute idiot.
There is an offseason for this type of crap. Either way, send him packing if he does not want to be in Baltimore.

  14. slipkid says: Dec 28, 2009 2:38 PM

probly but he isnt good enough to start over flacco so why is he considered that good apparently…

  15. A_Source_close_2_Favre says: Dec 28, 2009 2:44 PM

How dumb can players and agents be?
First, it is still the regular season and
Second who would trade for Trow Smith anyway?

  16. Big_McLargeHuge says: Dec 28, 2009 2:44 PM

Meh, he wasn’t really that stellar with “THE” Overrated State University…. Kudos to his surrounding cast on offense.

  17. KingJoe! says: Dec 28, 2009 2:46 PM

You know what he will generate … the ability for another former Heisman Trophy winner to be cut from his NFL without ever making any real impact.

  18. Ravenmaniac says: Dec 28, 2009 2:47 PM

You could see this coming a mile away. Troy Smith has an over-inflated opinion of himself. Always has.
The times when he does get in he is not that impressive. When the Ravens drafted him I was somewhat disappointed due to his size and that he dropped so far in the draft.

  19. cmich06 says: Dec 28, 2009 2:49 PM

So what is the going price for a short, unproven QB… box of kicking tees and a gallon gatorade?

You are drunk with stupidity if you think the Seahawks or anyone else will get Decosta. You can have Troy Smith though.

“He is not starter material period……”
Wow golongboyee, are you Bill Parcels? Because to say “period” you must be pretty sure of yourself. Seriously, are you Andy Reid? Bill Walsh maybe? Reveal yourself! BB? I know, this is Mel Kiper…that explains it all.

  22. GoBrowns19 says: Dec 28, 2009 2:56 PM

I don’t want a black QB in Cleveland. It’s the one naturally white position in the NFL and I’d like to keep it that way.

  23. Ravenmaniac says: Dec 28, 2009 3:01 PM

we will give the browns troy smith and frank walker for Josh Cirbbs….done and done….sign here…here…and initial here….

  24. Cushing Will Kill You says: Dec 28, 2009 3:09 PM

Al Davis should trade for Troy Smith and sign Vick after the Eagles release him. Then those two and Jamarcus Russell can duke it out for next season’s starting QB spot in Oakland. Most interceptions during preseason wins.

  25. birdmancometh says: Dec 28, 2009 3:17 PM

    @GoBrowns19
    Hate will consume you…
And besides, the best QB on your team is a brother.

  26. Rev. Dr. HollywoodWags says: Dec 28, 2009 3:17 PM

We need a Fritz Pollard Alliance weighing-in on this one, so we can figure out where this young, small, black QB can play.

Puhlease,…now that is the stupidest statement on this thread. I watched him play EVERY college game of his and believe me, you couldn’t be MORE wrong.
    Idiot-alert!

  28. goJags says: Dec 28, 2009 3:20 PM

Jags go and grab him. He is an upgrade to our current QB. Atleast it would be a leverage to make garrard take a pay cut on a pay that he don’t deserve.

  29. dakotah says: Dec 28, 2009 3:24 PM

I always thought Ozzie Newsome was a smart GM. Now I know his PFT username is Ravenmaniac.

  30. dbs0011 says: Dec 28, 2009 3:38 PM

Please world, ignore GoBrowns19′s racist comment. If Troy wants to come back home to compete for a QB job, CLE would welcome him in a heartbeat.

  31. MantuaRegulator says: Dec 28, 2009 3:38 PM

We don’t have a place on the roster for him in Cleveland. We’re trying to unload a worthless QB (read: Anderson) not add another to the team.
I agree with the other person here, he isn’t starter material. Maybe he’d be good in the CFL.

  32. Klytus says: Dec 28, 2009 3:40 PM

From some of the comments here, I can see several posters have not watched Troy play when he’s playing well.
Troy is too good of a quarterback to play backup to a franchise player like Joe Flacco. Troy wants to play before he starts collecting Social Security. Whether he is a franchise quarterback is still to be answered but he will never find out in Baltimore. And his timing is just fine.
Now the entire league knows there’s a quarterback that wants out of Baltimore. And since he is only a backup quarterback with a dubious future, the league won’t have to sell the farm to get him in a trade. Maybe a draft pick? There are some teams that could use a good if not great quarterback. The Rams, Browns, 49ers and Seahawks to name a few.
    GO STEELERS!

  33. Nobe says: Dec 28, 2009 3:41 PM

Cushing will kill you: “Al Davis should trade for Troy Smith and sign Vick after the Eagles release him. Then those two and Jamarcus Russell can duke it out for next season’s starting QB spot in Oakland. Most interceptions during preseason wins.”
….Even better – have Al Davis throw a first round pick to the Eagles for Vick and another to the Ravens for Brown!

  34. brownsLB says: Dec 28, 2009 3:44 PM

Let’s face it, Troy Smith is a midget under 6 ft. He should be a receiver of corner back with his speed. Better yet, be a kick off returner like Cribbs

  35. anaheim2dafullest says: Dec 28, 2009 3:51 PM

    Gobrowns19=idiot
I would take anyone any color that is gonna help my team win white or black….even Vick would be an upgrade vs. Any qb on the browns squad!

  36. the real deal says: Dec 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Miami could use a QB, this guy beat down Henne at OSU and he should beat Henne out of the NFL!!!!!!

  37. NinerNation says: Dec 28, 2009 4:18 PM

GoBrowns19 — You don’t want a black QB but you’re fine with the rest of your team being black? Does that seem weird to anybody else?
If a player is talented, he’s talented, it doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, asian, hispanic, whatever, I want the best players playing.
If Alex Smith busts next year, I want Nate Davis to have his shot. Do I care that he’s not a white boy? Hell no, I love that he’s mobile with a strong arm, and he also just so happens to be a good kid.
Race shouldn’t matter in any aspect of life, and if you judge people solely on their ethnicity, then I feel sorry for you.

  38. nasheagles says: Dec 28, 2009 4:25 PM

he has no trade value…. none… he lasted till the 5th rd a few yrs ago and hasnt played….so his value isnt going up…

  39. raideralex99 says: Dec 28, 2009 4:31 PM

NinerNation … I don’t think gobrowns19 was being racist … just stating facts that you can’t win with a black QB.
And since we are being up color of skin … Jason Whitlock (black) wrote a report last year that the top winning teams in the NFL has the most white players on the team. Hmmmm.

  40. Chris says: Dec 28, 2009 4:51 PM

For all the people who claim that he is too short, please let me know Drew Brees height. The fact is that Troy Smith beat Joe Flacco for the job last year and got sick at the wrong time.

  41. BigEasy33 says: Dec 28, 2009 4:54 PM

    Drew Brees 5′ 11′ 7/8…..however he’s no Drew Brees….back up QB demanding a trade…that’s funny!!

great timing Troy – good description of troy smith
me, me, me, me, me, me, me. enough about me, what do you think about me.
don’t let the door hit you on the a$$ on the way out. business being business, tender him mid level and trade him for a 3 or even a two. when he has played, he has played well. some team will want to give him a shot and for a low first day pick it may be worth it.

  44. bornman3 says: Dec 28, 2009 5:33 PM

    buckifan4life says:
“Puhlease,…now that is the stupidest statement on this thread. I watched him play EVERY college game of his and believe me, you couldn’t be MORE wrong. ”
I’m sorry, but you cannot be serious here. You mean like David Klingler, Akili Smith, Andre Ware, Ty Detmer, and Kyle Boller could make every throw in college? Until you see Troy Smith make every throw with a pro football in his hand, like Ravens fans have in training camp, you have no clue. Sayonara Troy!

  45. ppdoc13 says: Dec 28, 2009 5:39 PM

@Chris – Troy did not beat out Joe Flacco. It was never in the plan to let Flacco start. When they both played Flacco looked better. Troy got sick. Flacco came in. End of story. Troy was never heads and tails the choice of the coaching staff. They didn’t want Boller and didn’t want to rush Flacco. Know the facts before making the statement.

  46. BaltimoreSports says: Dec 28, 2009 5:50 PM

I wish him the best of luck. He was a solid backup here in Bmore. He deserves a shot at a starting job (hopefully outside the AFC North)

  47. BigOx says: Dec 28, 2009 6:11 PM

He could easily win the starting job for the Rams, Browns, Panthers, etc. He indeed will generate interest. A trade would be in the Raven’s best interest – he’s not going to hang around to watch Flacco.

  48. Ravens Macg says: Dec 28, 2009 6:32 PM

If smith authorized this then he’s a classless jerk doing so in a playoff hunt. If it was his agent then smith should fire him. As far as smith goes he is a backup QB. No matter how Flacco became the starter he is the starter and the coaches know he has more talent and upside than smith. That’s why Flacco is starting and smith isn’t. Just plain old common sense. Duh

  49. Bob Buckowski says: Dec 28, 2009 6:35 PM

Y’all make fun of Count Davis but Seymour has been stout for the Raiders this year. Number 1 picks are 50/50 crap shoots at best. N.E. defense hasn’t been the same since. The biggest thing holding the Raiders back has been the QB play. Look at that number 1 crapshoot?
